On your student’s first day, you’re more than welcome to walk in with them and meet with the counselor to help them get settled. If your student is ready to jump in on their own, that’s perfectly fine too—we want them to feel comfortable either way.
New students begin their first day in the counseling office, where we make sure they have all the materials they need, including their schedule. They’ll be paired with a 'Welcome Ambassador', aka a current DMS student who enjoys welcoming new classmates. The Welcome Ambassador from the same grade level will meet your student in the counseling office, give them a tour, help them get to each of their classes, and even serve as a lunch buddy if your student is interested.
Students can begin entering the building at 7:00 a.m. Car riders and walkers can enter through the front doors, which will be opened by a staff member. Bus riders will be released at the appropriate time. Between 7:00 and 7:15, students are able to go to their lockers, catch up with friends, talk with a teacher, visit the library, or grab breakfast.
Dismissal is at 2:20 p.m. each day. After the bell, students return to their lockers to gather their belongings and then exit the building to catch the bus, walk home, or head to the car rider pick-up area.
