Daily Agenda

Monday January 13, 2020:

  • Literacy: Today we focused on the long i and long o sounds in -old and -ild words as well as reviewed the oi vowel team. Kids also created vocabulary webs using our word of the day, thief.
  • Daily 5: Book Clubs, Word Work, Independent Reading
  • Math: Our goal today is to be able to understand the relationship between inches, feet, and yards. We will also begin discussing the relationship with the associative property of addition.
  • Social Studies: Introduction to pioneers.
  • Writing: Our goal is to be able to persuade an audience of a stance on a topic using reasons and evidence. Today we'll be discussing what kinds of reasons help to persuade an audience by looking at a mentor text and identifying the reasons the author gives as to which pet a character should get.

Monday December 2, 2019

  • Literacy: Our goal today is to be able to decode/encode words with the long o sound which include oo and ew, as well as reviewing oi.
  • Daily 5: Meeting with our book clubs to discuss our books and work on comprehension as well as emphasizing phonics work through classroom rotations.
  • Math: Our goal today is to be able to solve one and two step addition and subtraction problems using a variety of strategies. Kids will be using visuals paired with different strategies in order to solve problems and articulate their thinking aloud to the classroom. They will be doing this through number talks as well as written work. MATH rotations today will focus on telling time on an analog clock.
  • Science/Social Studies/WIN: Finishing up our Maps of the school project.
  • Music
  • Writing: Our goal today is to understand the author's purpose both in writing and in reading. We will be identifying various works of literature and what the author's purpose is through each. Using the phrase, "Easy as PIE!" to remember the acronym for purpose. PIE=Persuade, Inform, Entertain. Our goal is to eventually translate that purpose in to our writing as we begin our informative writing unit tomorrow.

  • Literacy: Working on decoding/encoding words with the oo vowel team and practicing using our Superkids workbook.
  • Daily 5 Rotations: Working through book clubs, word work, and reading independently.
  • Math: reviewing subtracting on open number lines. Our Math Rotations will focus on reviewing this skill as well as pushing ahead with subtraction. IXL practice: 2nd Grade Q: Telling time.
  • Number Corner: Focusing on telling time on both digital/analog clocks.
  • Science: Our goal is to be able to pull important information from the text we read. Kids will be reading through various texts about biomes and recording information about each in a note catcher.
  • Music
  • Writing: Our goal today is to be able to write a story with a strong beginning, middle, and end which includes characters, setting, problem, and solution.

Wednesday November 13, 2019

  • Literacy: Working on decoding/encoding words with the oy/oi spelling pattern. Reviewing words with the r-controlled vowel pattern. Additional practice through Superkids workbook activities.
  • Math lesson over introduction to the thousands place. MATH rotations: Meet with teacher for math intervention/acceleration; At your seat work with task cards based on needs; Technology work through IXL needs; Hands On work with work places.
  • Daily 5 Rotations with book clubs, EPIC! reading, and word work.
  • Music
  • Writing: Our goal today is to be able to tell a story with a beginning, middle and end. We will be focusing on adding details to our work during writing workshop.

Tuesday, November 12:

  • Literacy: Decoding/encoding words with the oi/oy vowel pattern.
  • Daily 5: Book Club book work.
  • Math: Number talks over 3 digit minus 3 digit numbers and the variety of strategies we can use to solve those problems. Our goal today is to be able to demonstrate an understanding that the digits i na 3-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones. The kids will have to estimate how many popsicle sticks there are in a container and then use a variety of strategies to add the total. Our MATH rotations today will focus on emphasizing those skills.
  • WIN: Focusing on creating a Story Mountain Map with the goal of being able to understand the plot of a story. Kids will read a story and then place those events on the story mountain map.
  • Writing: Our goal is to be able to brainstorm ideas for our writing and begin a story focusing on one of those small moments.

Tuesday October 28:

  • Literacy: Working on decoding/encoding word with or. Practice in our Superkids workbook.
  • Daily 5 Rotations: Meet with the teacher for book clubs (discussion/comprehension/phonics practice), listen to EPIC!, work on spelling packet for word work, read to self.
  • Math: Number talks over subtracting a two digit number from a three digit number. Kids will also be measuring items throughout the classroom using measuring unifix tapes. Math rotations for additional practice.
  • Writing: Finishing up unifinished summaries from yesterday as well as free writing.
  • 2 hour early release due to inclement weather.

Monday October 27:

  • Literacy: Working on decoding/encoding word with or. Comprehension check up over Superkids Reader.
  • Daily 5 rotations: Meet with teacher for book club comprehension/phonics work, listen to EPIC! for technology, work on spelling packet for word work, read to self with parent volunteer.
  • Music
  • Writing: Ten Minute Tuck ins to review bossy r words. Read Aloud Mentor Text: Finding Winnie with an independent summary writing sheet.

Friday October 25:

  • Literacy: Working on decoding and encoding ar/ir/ur/ear/or words. Practicing as well in our Student Workbooks for Superkids.
  • Math: Our goal for today is to be able to understand what perimeter is and how to measure it. We will be using unifix cubes to measure perimeter. Introduce our new game of Pick 2, Roll and Subtract to practice subtraction fluency. Kids will also be working in rotations to practice skills and take a checkpoint over measurement.
  • Art
  • Writing: Working on Summarizing the book, Bear Makes a Friend individually.

Thursday October 24:

  • Working on decoding and encoding or words.
  • Daily 5 Rotations: Book Groups (Comprehension and phonics in small groups)
  • Math: Our goal for today is to be able to manipulate numbers from 1-20 as well as subtract two digit numbers from three digit numbers.

  • Storyteller
  • Writing: Kids will be writing a summary with a partner over a book.
  • PE
  • Science: Kids will be working on their PBL Project with their groups.

Wednesday October 23:

  • Literacy: Working on decoding and encoding or words.
  • Daily 5 Rotations: Book Groups (Comprehension and phonics in small groups)
  • Math: Our goal for today is to be able to subtract a two digit number from a three digit number using a variety of strategies. We will be working through this using number talks and sharing out our strategies.
  • Writing: Our goal is to be able to summarize what we write. We will be reading the book, Mr. President Goes to School, and then summarizing the text as a class.
  • WIN: Working on our Math PBL Project.

Tuesday October 22:

  • Literacy: Decoding and Encoding bossy r words (r controlled vowels: ur and or)
  • Daily 5 Rotations: Meet with Miss Almer for book clubs + discussions, Technology reading books on EPIC!, Word Work on Spelling Packet and practice for the week, Read to Self the Superkids reader as well as independent reading choice.
  • Math: Our goal today is to be able to show how to measure an object of unknown length. We will be strategizing how to measure different objects, if you know the length of various other objects. The kids will also be continuing to apply addition strategies for three digit plus two digit problems. In our math rotations, kids will be playing subtraction work place games, working in small groups based on additional instruction needed, and practicing further skills through Home Connections and practicing subtraction skills on IXL.
  • Afternoon social studies: The kids will be continuing to work on their Map Student Ambassador PBL.

Monday October 21:

  • Literacy: Decoding and Encoding bossy r words (r controlled vowels: ur)
  • Daily 5 Rotations: Meet with Miss Almer for book clubs + discussions, Technology reading books on EPIC!, Word Work on Spelling Packet and practice for the week, Read to Self the Superkids reader as well as independent reading choice.
  • Math: Number talks over different strategies used to solve a three digit plus two digit number. Mini-Lesson: Reviewing adding up dots and determining number counts based on different ways to group dots. Students will then be participating in our math rotations. Technology: Reviewing skills on IXL H Subtraction. At Seat work: Home Connections work. Meet with teacher: Reviewing concepts based on student need. Hands On: subtraction work places math games.
  • Writing: Writing a Summary over the book Einstein Finds a Friend. Kids will also be working during writing workshop on answering a prompt.
  • WIN time: finishing up earlier assignments as well as independently reading.

Friday October 4:

  • Literacy: Working on memory words spelling and decoding: was, close, does, doesn't.
  • Daily 5 Rotations: Meet with Miss Almer for book clubs, Technology with EPIC! Reading about animal habitats, Read to self chapters 3-4 of the Superkids Reader, Word Work: Red words with task cards for spelling practice.
  • Math: Number talks over doubling/halving, Mini-lesson: how many tens do I have? Practice moving tens to hundreds column and ones to ten. Math Rotations: Meet with teacher for additional practice, at seat work with home connections practice, technology IXL with place value, and Hands On work places.
  • Writing: Writing a Summary after reading an article.
  • PE
  • Social Studies: How can we create a map of the school?

Thursday October 3:

  • Literacy: Working on adding plural endings to nouns. Kids will be decoding and encoding similar words.
  • Daily 5 Rotations include finishing up our book club books.
  • Math: Focusing on transferring numbers from the ones column, to the tens, to the hundreds to understand place value. Rotations with Miss Almer for math practice.
  • Library
  • Writing: Focus on Summary writing and RAP notebooks.
  • Computer Lab
  • WIN/Science/Social Studies: Brainstorming on how to be a student ambassador for people who are visiting Lenski for the first time.

Wednesday October 2:

  • Literacy: Decoding and encoding plural words (when to add s/es). Review ea vowel teams.
  • Daily 5 Rotations include finishing up book club books.
  • Math: Number talks over doubling/halving, mini lesson about distributing excess ones to the tens and excess tens to the hundreds column. Math rotations include working with Miss Almer in specific math groups geared to help students strengthen one area of math they need additional support in; technology practice in IXL; At seat practice of math worksheet work over skill topic; Hands on Work Places Games.
  • Writing: Summary Writing and RAP notebooks.

Tuesday October 1:

  • Literacy: Decoding and encoding words with the -ess pattern and review the ea vowel team.
  • Daily 5 Rotations: Meeting with Miss Almer for book club discussions, reading with a parent volunteer out of our Super magazine (nonfiction text), practicing spelling, and listening to reading on EPIC!
  • Math: Warm Up & Number Talks, work with Doubling/Halving. Our mini-lesson goal today is to be able to solve one-step addition and subtraction story problems with sums and minuends to 100. We will be working with sorting beans and adding/subtracting them. Our math rotations today will focus on individual areas each student needs additional practice in.
  • Writing: Practicing writing out a summary statement: Introduce the title, verb it, finish it. (Example: Elmer and the Dragon tells about the boy, Elmer, and how he helps to free a dragon.) We will be practicing as a class using our Superkids fluency passages to summarize.
  • Art
  • Science: Finish up plant presentation of information.

Monday September 30:

  • Literacy: Decoding and encoding the spelling pattern of ea.
  • Daily 5 Rotations include discussing our book club books as well as reading our Superkids readers (about the Superkids), and practicing our spelling for the week. Kids will also be reading about plants on EPIC!
  • Math: Warm Up: Review Doubling/Halving. Number Talks: review doubling/halving. Our lesson today will be to determine how to transfer an amount of beans from the tens column to the ones column. Our goal is to be able to demonstrate an understanding that the digits in a 3-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones. We will be working through MATH rotations Meet the teacher to focus on specific math skills, At your seat work on home connections work, Technology focus on subtraction on IXL, Hands On Work Places games.
  • Writing: Phonemic Awareness practice to work on changing vowels and consonants in one word to create another word. The bulk of our writing practice will be on learning how to write a summary sentence: Introduce It, Verb it, Finish It.
  • PE
  • Number Corner: Finishing up finding patterns for the month of September on our Calendar Grid.
  • Science: Final plant activity to create a plant and include information we have learned about plants.

Thursday September 12:

  • Literacy: Decoding and Spelling tch, ch, and sh words as well as reviewing ai/oa vowel pattern words.

Wednesday September 11:

  • Literacy: Working on tch, ch, and sh sounds as well as reviewing ai sounds. We will also be reading independently.
  • Math: Our goal is to be able to understand how to manipulate numbers up to 20 using addition and subtraction. We will be putting this to practice in our number talks and taking a math checkpoint to check for understanding over this concept.
  • Writing: Our goal is to be able to restate our thinking using the RAP process (Restate, Answer, Prove). We will be reading through different passages and responding to questions about the passages using this method. (Ie: What is your favorite color? My favorite color is blue.)
  • Social Studies: Close reading lesson of our National Geographic Explorer magazine. Kids will be making inferences about images and referencing their thinking.

Tuesday September 10:

  • Literacy: Working on tch, ch, and sh sounds as well as reviewing ai sounds.
  • Math: Our goal is to be able to understand how to manipulate numbers up to 20 including finding sums/differences/greater than/less than. We will be working on how to find different combinations of numbers up to 20. Number talks using different strategies that work best for us for adding/subtracting.
  • Writing: Superkids Beginning of the Year Baseline test online.
  • Computer Lab
  • WIN: Working on math problem solving strategies.

Monday September 9:

  • Literacy: Working on tch, ch, and sh sounds as well as reviewing ai sounds.
  • Daily 5: Transitioning between EPIC! reading on the computers, read to self, group work, and spelling word work practice.
  • Math: Number talks on finding connections between similar addition problems, reviewing greater than/less than, mini-lesson on the number rack, and practice logging in to IXL to prepare for math workshop rotations.
  • Writing: Starting our letters to our pen pals in Minnesota.
  • Science: Why are plants green? We will be finishing chlorophyll rubbings with plant leaves to see the green pigment from the plants.

Friday September 6:

  • Literacy: Decoding words with the ai, sh, and ch sound.
  • Daily 5: Working on transitioning between different stations. Technology (EPIC!) as well as read independently.
  • Math: Number Talks; vocalizing our thinking on how to solve various problems.

Thursday September 5:

  • Literacy: Decoding words ending in ch and sh. Reviewing the ai vowel team as well.

Wednesday September 4:

  • Literacy: Decoding and encoding words ending in sh or ch. We will also review the vowel team ai.
  • Math: Reviewing our work with the number rack and practicing reading and manipulating sums up to 20.
  • Writing: Practicing writing friendly letters to Miss Almer using the correct components of letter writing.
  • Music
  • Science: Our goal is to be able to understand the different parts of a plant and the component each part plays in assisting the plant in it's life cycle.

Tuesday September 3:

  • Literacy: Finish iReady
  • Math: Our goal is to be able to use strategies to add with sums to 20. We'll be utilizing the number rack to manipulate numbers. Students will also be introduced to the terms: Greater than, less than, equal to, difference, and sum.
  • Writing: Working on Superkids work with ch and sh.
  • Art
  • Science lesson on the life cycle of a plant.

Friday August 30:

  • Literacy: Decoding and spelling words with the oa vowel pattern as well as words with the o consonant e pattern. We'll do a few activities around this as well.
  • Math: Create bar graphs related to beetles.
  • Writing: Friendly letter writing.
  • P.E.
  • Science: Learning more about the life cycle of plants.

Thursday August 29:

  • Literacy: Working on a consonant e words and discussing what e does to a short vowel. We'll be working on reading and spelling words with those patterns.
  • Math: Working on graphing our beetles and sorting them based on how people designed their beetles.
  • Writing: Our goal is to understand what goes in a friendly letter and be able to convey information to others.
  • Computer Lab
  • WIN: Meet with our Kindergarten buddies and complete a get to know you activity.

Wednesday August 28:

  • Literacy: Working on words ending in eep and eat as well as reviewing words using the long vowel oa sound.
  • Math: Sorting our beetles in to a Venn Diagram and interpreting our beetles based on the data.
  • Second Step Lesson: Focusing and Listening
  • iReady Reading
  • Music
  • Science: Dissecting a seed to see the interior. Our goal is to be able to understand the parts to a seed.

Tuesday August 27:

  • Warm Up: Working on our math number sense today by looking at place value.
  • Literacy: Decoding and Encoding words ending in -ain and -oat. We will be focusing on the ai and oa vowel teams.
  • Math: Looking at the beetles we made yesterday and determining how to best sort our beetles. (By interests, birth months, etc.) We will also be using math manipulatives to understand base ten blocks and how one base ten block equates to another.
  • iReady Reading testing
  • Science: Our goal today is to understand the life cycle of a plant. We will be drawing out the life cycle and working to understand the different steps.

Monday August 26:

  • Warm Up: Easing in to our work with our math warm up notebooks to focus on number sense.
  • Superkids: Reading and spelling practice with words that use a super e, as well as reviewing words with a long o sound (oa vowel team).
  • Math: Working on assembling our beetles based on factors about ourselves. (Ie: birthday, favorite season, etc.) We will be using these beetles to create glyphs tomorrow to compare and contrast our classroom data/interests.
  • Writing: Identifying declarative, exclamatory, and interrogative sentences in our writing as well as how to combine sentences using "and".
  • Science: "Planting" our lima/kidney beans in bags with a paper towel. Our goal is to be able to understand what helps a plant to grow as well as understanding the life cycle of seeds.

Wednesday August 21:

  • Working on our daily 5 rotation: what does it mean to independent read?
  • Superkids Super e work!
  • Band Concert: Introducing us to the instruments available to play this year.

Tuesday August 20:

  • Establishing Classroom jobs, introducing Number Corner, working on our Superkids work (magic e!)

Monday August 19:

  • Get to know me activities, class expectations, labeling supplies, daily routines.
