Not to worry! It is totally normal to feel overwhelmed. You can help your child by encouraging them to practice (Quizlet, Conjuguemos etc.) , learn from their mistakes, and focus on their learning, not their grade. If they ask you to help quiz them on vocab, try your best to pronounce the words and laugh a little together! Ask them to show you what they are learning/proud of. Be interested in their learning, not just their successes or failures.
They will be required to practice the vocab for their unit and verb conjugation at a minimum. This will not be an every night occurrence. More often than not it will be twice a week. My goal is to have the practice happen in class because I know how busy they are outside of school. Occasionally you will see them come home with work from projects that they have run out of time to do at school. This will happen very rarely. When in doubt, check my website here for Spanish IB and here for Spanish II for what we did in class today and HW.
Go to my website. Click on your child's level (1B or II). Then click on the icon that says "What did we do in class today." Communicate with your child, have them communicate with another student in the class, then communicate with me. and After those steps, e-mail me if you have further questions.
Grading is divided into three categories: SMWYK Pequeños (quizzes), SMWYK Grandes (unit tests), and Academic Habits. These grades are based on proficiency, not percentage.
In a perfect world, your child would finish my class and be fluent in Spanish. While I cannot promise this, I can promise that your child will learn useful, helpful vocabulary. They will learn to recognize and remember language patterns. They will be exposed to authentic materials in the target language and encouraged to communicate, read, and write in Spanish. Most importantly, they will be inspired to continue with the language for the rest of their life!
