Happy Friday everyone!!

Even though it was really chilly on Field Day we had a blast!!

We finished our final math AND spelling test of the year! Check your kiddo's folder for their papers!!

Even though we are finished testing, next week we are going to be learning the last 20 words of our unit in SuperKids!! We will NOT test over it. However, if you want to look over it and practice at home, here they are:

I will not be sending a list home but here are some helpful videos:

FIELD TRIP TO ROXBOROUGH STATE PARK WILL BE ON TUESDAY, MAY 14TH!!

We will load buses at 9:15 and return around 1:00. We will have a picnic lunch at the park so please pack a sack lunch for your child on Tuesday. We will be hiking with a nature guide so have your child wear good hiking shoes. Dressing in layers is a good idea, too. The forecast right now on my Pinpoint Weather app shows a high of 73 and a chance for afternoon thunderstorms. We will keep an eye on the forecast and make decisions as it gets closer.   The students will be able to carry their backpack with a water bottle in it (or a camelback). They could also carry a hat or extra jacket. They do not want us to have food on the trail so all lunch boxes will be kept at the visitor center for us. Putting their name on their lunch box or paper bag will be very helpful!

On this field trip, the nature guides would like us to limit the number of parent volunteers to 2 per group of 10. I have 5 parent volunteers signed up to come along. If you are unable to attend this field trip, please plan on joining us for the class picnic on May 21. The more parents walking with us to the park, the better!

Upcoming dates and info:

Friday, May 17 Wilder SteamFest. This Wilder tradition is a fun day that focuses on science, technology, engineering, art, and music. You do not need to do anything for it.

Tuesday, May 21 – First Grade Picnic at the Burning Tree neighborhood park.  All parents and siblings are welcome to come! I'd love to have a lot of parents walk over with us to help with crossing streets.  If you are walking with us, please meet us outside at our classroom door at 10:00. Kids will carry their lunch, water bottle, a towel or blanket to sit on, toys to play with, hat, etc. in their backpack. If you are unable to walk over with us, plan on meeting us there, even for just a little bit! We should arrive around 10:30. Kinder is having their author celebration at the same time so parking will be tough.

Friday, May 24 – Last Day of School  11:50 dismissal

I hope you all have a great weekend!! See below for some field day pictures!!☺️

May 3, 2024

Wow guys!! I cannot believe we are in our last month of school with only 3 more weeks left!! It is starting to become very bittersweet 🥺💖

We finished our iReady math AND reading!! We will be submitting the results soon and we will be sending scores home once we get them all in. If your kiddo has been absent anytime the last two weeks, or have been taking a little longer, they will be pulled out of the classroom (during non-instruction time) so that they can finish next week. Our goal is to be done by the 10th, as laptops are being turned in May 10th which is a week from today!

In math we have been learning how to tell time and find the rules in input and output tables!! Be on the lookout for the quiz we took today going home. Next week we will be doing measurement and collecting data!! I plan to have our last math test next Friday - due to field day on Tuesday and other things we are prepping for in class, we might move it to the following week - but my goal is Friday May 10th!! On the assessment it will be exactly what was on the quiz PLUS be able to answer questions off of a data table.

Next week will also be our last spelling test!! Today's spelling test also went home! We have learned a lot about ou and ow by reading a word with ou or ow out loud, putting it in a sentence, and even putting jumbled up sentences with an ou or ow word in the correct order! Next week we will continue ou and ow; however, we will learn that it doesn't always follow the /ow/ sounding rule!😯 We learned in our secret story that ow and ou will sometimes see superhero O fly by and say OHHHH. We will also be learning new memory words and making sure we understand what they mean! Here is the LAST spelling list:

Last week in writing, we got to choose an animal to research on Pebble Go and write about it (currently in the process of grading🤪) so THIS week - we got to choose ANYTHING from Pebble Go we were interested in learning more of - or something we have never learned about and researched that topic!! We researched our topic then got to create a poster about facts we found out about our topic that will hang in our hallway! Today we walked around the classroom and taught people our research project, then each of us had to go around and tell the class what they learned today from someone else. Ask your kiddo a fact about the topic they researched about AND something they learned from someone else!!

Tuesday is field day!! The kiddos also won ANOTHER PAW party so we are going to do a PJ and stuffy day. So, on Tuesday please bring tennis shows AND normal clothes for field day. Then, also bring PJS, stuffy, and slippers (if you want) to change into to get cozy in for the rest of the day on Tuesday after field day. Please look at the weather on Tuesday so your child is appropriately dressed for field day AND PJ day - a lot of kiddos have been coming in SUPER hot from recess.

Upcoming Dates:

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Reach out if you have any questions!!

Thank you to everyone who came to our Author's Celebration to celebrate our amazing authors! If you didn't get a chance to come, please check out your student's backpack for their poetry book as well as their What I Want to Be book if you purchased one!

This last week in math we started talking about time. We talked about seconds, minutes, and hours and how long different activities take. We will be having a quiz this Friday!

In literacy we learned soft c and g. We also researched all on our own an animal we wanted to learn more about!! We also finished our iReady reading. We have a goal of 100% effort by everyone in our class, and let me say how IMPRESSED I am with ALL of the effort by each of these kiddos. They should all be SO proud of themselves!!

I underestimated all of the activities we were doing on Friday to get ready for author's celebration and the kindergartner's visiting us - so we did not take our spelling test.

This week we are learning ou and ow in spelling! We will have our last spelling test Friday, May 10th! Two more weeks!

We're finishing up learning about and writing poetry this week. This is a very creative group of poets!

We finished our first week of Unit 14 in our SuperKids curriculum. We only have two and a half more. They've learned a lot of spelling patterns this year. Next week we will learn that the c and g will make its soft sound when followed by an i, e or y along with 6 memory words. (circus, city, giraffe, gym). When reading at home, be on the look out for these soft sounds!

Happy sunny Friday! Hopefully you are able to spend some time outside this weekend in the sunshine!

This week in math we continued our work with Hansel and Gretel by adding objects along the path to help us add with multiple addends. We worked with equations like 2+10+5+1=18. We talked about regrouping numbers to help make the addition easier and took our unit assessment - going home today!!

In literacy we learned that vowels can be controlled by r!! Along with more memory words. Next week's spelling words are vowel teams/diphthongs oi and oy! Spelling words for next week:

Even though it is a short week, I will still be having our spelling test on Thursday.

In writing we finished our 'I Need My Monster' fun descriptive writing and started poetry yesterday and will continue it next week!

In science we enjoyed watching the eclipse on Monday and talking more about patterns in the sky.

We have also started a readers theater over the solar eclipse!! Students are in groups acting as newscasters talking about the solar eclipse! We are working on finishing our news background and hopefully will get to read our scripts today or Monday! I am going to try and record and figure out a way to upload a video that is longer then a couple of minutes to share with you guys - so if you have any ideas on how to do this please let me know!!

HAPPY SPRING BREAK EVERYONE!!!!

A couple of notes to look ahead and I will try and keep it pretty short with photos at the end!!

Coming back - that Friday we will have a math quiz and a spelling test.

AR and OR: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poRGpvdKT84

Send in 1-2 pictures of spring break!! Those who had a photo printed out ready for them to start their morning writing really made them smile!! If you email me 1-2 photos of your spring break I will print it off and staple it for their writing to help them reference back to what happened and write about what they did over spring break!

In April we will be preparing for our final iReady math and reading testing (see dates below). There are quite a bit of students without headphones that either broke or they lost them. Be on the lookout after spring break for me to email you if your child needs headphones to ensure they have the best quality to take their iReady test :)

Thank you to everyone who came to set up and help run our 120th Day Mystery! The kids had a blast and were able to complete their missions and find Zero the Hero :) Hopefully you heard about some of what we did! (Finger printing, STEM challenges, finding numbers to 120, and more!) Scroll down for pictures of 120th day and snack and read!

Thank you as well for meeting with me this week to talk about your sweet kids! This year is flying by and 2nd grade will be here before you know it.

Saturday, April 6th - Wilder's Spring Auction & Fundraiser

Join parents, friends and members of the Littleton community at this adults only event coming up next month! This is a great way to socialize with other parents while also serving a good cause to give back to our great Elementary.

Next week we will be taking our unit 5 math test. Students will need to draw lines on shapes to show 1/2 and 3/4s. Students will also need to be able to identify whether something is 1/2 or 1/4. Then, students will be given shapes to glue into a a shape (EX: the main shape is a trapezoid, students will use either rhombuses, hexagons, triangles, or trapezoids to fill up that main shape. Then, students will have to identify how many of each shape they used to fill up the main shape).

Spelling words for next week - aw (says short o sound) and memory words:

Rule:  when AW are together, they make the short o sound.

BOOK TITLE CONTEST: If your kiddo is wanting to draw a title cover for our 'When I Grow Up' book we are publishing, please have them turn it in by Wednesday, March 13th! You can relate it to jobs, being a dreamer, or of our whole class!! If your child wants to participate please return it by Wednesday, March 13th so we can vote on it by Friday, March 15th. March 2, 2024

Hi everyone! We had such a fun day yesterday with our earned electronic day! See photos at the end of this letter :)

I look forward to meeting with each of you next week at conferences to celebrate these amazing kids! They have grown so much this school year! I can't wait to share their progress with you!

Monday is our 120th day of school. First grade will have very fun, very TOP SECRET celebration! The kids know we'll do a "little" something, but they don't know that the room will be transformed into a Spy Lab and they will all be Secret Agents whose mission it is to rescue Zero the Hero from devious Agent 119 who has stolen Zero the Hero. Without Zero the Hero we cannot celebrate the 120th day of school! The day will be full of special missions, all focused on counting and solving math problems to 120.

Feel free to allow them to dress as Secret Agents or a spy! We will have black lights so anything that will glow will be fun! Thank you to the volunteers who have offered to come in yesterday after school to transform the room and to those who have volunteered to come run a station on Monday!

Due to Tuesday being a long conference night, I thought we would have a relaxing fun afternoon on Wednesday. We will be doing a snack and read! Wednesday kiddos can bring books (or use mine or their library books), a blanket, stuffy, an extra or special snack - NO PEANUTS OR TREE NUTS PLEASE! They can wear their pajamas too! If you have a flashlight they can bring one - we will lounge around in the afternoon and read and snack :D

I'll keep this this parent letter short this week and look forward to meeting with you next week!

February 23, 2024

Happy Friday everyone!!

We had a great week together! We started learning about 2D and 3D shapes - ask us to give you real life examples of either 2D / 3D shapes!! We will have a math quiz on Wednesday. Students will need to be able to identify shapes correctly, identify if a shape is the shape it is (is this a square?) they have to answer yes or no. To get full points, students need to be able to explain why it is or is not that shape using attributes to explain. I will also read a sentence that describes a shape, and students need to be able to draw the shape I am describing. This is a quiz that is heavy in following directions. EX: Draw a red line under the cylinder. Color the triangles yellow, etc.

We have been learning more about contractions and practicing silent e and vowel teams. Some of us have started having writing conferences with Ms. Abraham to talk about what we have been doing well in and areas we can grow in.

We are finishing up our opinion writing this week: we had to explain why we chose a specific season as the best season EVER!

Next week's spelling words are long vowel trickers with memory words:

How this works is there are two teams. Each team competes against each other to see who can either read the most memory words or spell the most memory words (depending on the week). Practicing memory words at home is very beneficial!!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend - enjoy the nice weather!!

February 9, 2024

Hi everyone! I hope you are having a great week!

A couple of updates in the classroom - I am allowing more choice in the classroom. When it comes to whole-group learning, students can choose to sit on their spot on the carpet or at their tables.

During independent time, students may choose to work alone or with a partner and wherever in the classroom. If choosing to work with a partner they have to be teachers. There is teacher A and teacher B. Teacher A starts off working and teaching whatever the task is at hand to teacher B, while teacher B listens. Then, teacher B will teach while teacher A listens. I am doing this in hopes that this gets students excited about completing their work while learning, but also having that sense of choice. We even have a system where we will ask, "Who would like to teach someone who may need extra help." Then we will ask, "Hey, if you feel like you will need help with this, raise your hand," then this helps us pair some kiddos to really teach other kiddos who may struggle a little bit - often times independent time can be harder for kiddos and sometimes they will just sit there frustrated - with this strategy it allows those kiddos to receive help and also allows kiddos to take leadership while I meet with groups.

During lunch, paras have come to notice there is a lot of, "Hey I'll be your friend if you buy me this snack," and kiddos are going back and buying snacks for other people. We cannot stop anyone from doing this, but if you want to check your back account and have a chat with your kiddo please do! We are also having chats with students that you should only be buying snacks for yourself, but again, we cannot stop kiddos from buying a snack and choosing what happens to it.

Spelling next week: memory words, words that end in -ay, and dropping the i or e and adding a suffix.

Changing y to i before adding -er and -est: For most words that end in y, change the y to i and then add the ending.

Since it is a short week, we will not be having a test, but please still practice at home!!

February 4, 2024

Happy February everyone! I hope you all enjoyed the snow dump we got yesterday.

I am feel a whole lot better - slept all day Thursday and Friday then Saturday got the results that I did have strep and finally started meds!! I have not had strep since I was a kid and boy how it is not fun. I will be all well and set for coming back tomorrow.

January hit us hard with sicknesses and they are still going around. Flu, covid, and strep are some of the biggest contenders out there (per doctor telling me). Please keep in mind of other kiddos and us teachers if your child is showing any symptoms and if you can keep them home - please do.

If I am out and I do not respond, please know I will get to you as soon as I can - if there is a change in the way your child is going home - tell the front office as I probably will not see it and be able to tell the sub (if I could).

This weekly letter is going to be very short. We will have a math test on Friday as well as a spelling test.

For the math test: Students will need to be able to identify hidden beads on a number rack. This time it will show up to 20 beads. If it shows 5 beads on the top and 5 beads on the bottom, students need to finish this equation: 10 + _____ = 20. We have been practicing, I have _____, I need ______, to get to 20. You can practice this at home with your kiddo. Here is a great online number rack to practice at home. Click here.  Students will then have 3 minutes to add stacked equations that will sometimes be two digit numbers: 10 + 9 (but in stacked form). Students will also need to be able to tell if an equation is true or false. Is 12 + 8 = 19? False. Is 10 + 10 = 8 +2 - true. Then, students will have 3 minutes to subtract stacked equations from double digits as well. EX: 10 - 5 (but stacked). Lastly, there will be three story problems that I will read to them, but students will need to be able to draw, write an equation, and place their answer on the answer line. This story problems will range from adding, subtracting, and finding an unknown number.

Spelling this week will be sneaky Y!

January 26, 2024

Happy snowy Friday!!

We had a crazy first full week of school since before the break!! We are still remembering how to get back in the groove of school with expectations and we're doing a pretty decent job!

We have been refreshing our brains in math with fact families using penguins and using our counting on strategy to figure out our missing fact family member. If our top 'big guy' number is 14, and we are shown 7 penguins, we have to use our fact family minds to figure out what the missing member is! What helped us the most was either knowing doubles, doubles plus or minus one, or counting on. Saying, "7." Then, using our fingers to count on, "8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14." The missing family member was 7! There will be a quiz on Monday for this unit! This quiz will give students 3 numbers, students need to choose two numbers that will equal 20 when added together. Students will also need to solve subtraction problems up to 20. Then, students need to use pictures, sentences, or equations to show their work and solve word problems.

In literacy we spent time learning about contractions. What the contraction would be pulled apart, and what the word would be if it was turned into a contraction.

Spelling words for next week:

When practicing with the memory words make sure you clarify the meaning - four like, "My brother is four years old." Two - "I have two pieces of candy." Etc. When doing contractions have students say what the word is stretched out and demonstrate what it would be like to squish them back together with the apostrophe.

Today, we talked about Groundhog day and made some predictions, so that next Friday we will know if our prediction was right or wrong!!

****I probably should have known I'd get an email about this, but unfortuntely I do have to take my Secret Stories page down. The owners did not like that I was sharing their stuff, rightfully so; but, here is a link you can go for some guidance. Click here. They also have an example page here.

We had a lockdown and firedrill this week. The fire drill went great; however, our lockdown drill was not ideal. Students were talking, moving around, and laughing. I think it is very important to have conversations with the kiddos on why we do lockdown drills and how important it is that we remain calm and completely still and quiet during that time. I think it would resonate a lot with them if you could also help me with expressing the importance of a lockdown drill. Thank you!!

January 19, 2024

This week in science we started investigating shadows and what may make a shadow. Next week we will start experimenting with shadows!

In math this week we had our penguin friends help us with doubles facts (2+2=4; 6+6=12). We asked the question, if rockhopper penguins lay 2 eggs, how many eggs would X amount of rockhoppers lay? We also started looking more at story problems with a missing addend (if 5 penguins are on the ice and some are in the water and all together I have 10 penguins, how many penguins are in the water?). Please check the blue folder to see one of our exit tickets. A couple of strategies we can use in math is double plus or minus one. It would look something like 8+9= _____. Students would see either 8 as a double and 9 being one more would add one more, "Oh, 8+8 is 16, so one more is 17!" or see 9 as a double and 8 being one less, "Oh! 9+9 is 18, so one less is 17!" Another strategy we used was counting on. If students are struggling with the doubles plus or minus one. We tell them to always start with the bigger number, say it, then count on with their fingers, "9 - 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17."

In literacy we learned a few more vowel teams - ie says the long i sound like in pie and ue says the long u sound like in blue and did a lot of practice on this. Next week we will start learning about contractions!! Next week's spelling words are all contractions:

We took our Superkids Unit 8 Mid-Year assessment (the spelling and online test) and on Monday we will be testing comprehension. I will read two short stories to the students, and they will bubble in the correct answer.

In writing we started work on our own opinion pieces, sharing our thoughts on whether we thought dogs were the best pet ever, or if they were not the best pet ever. We had to come up with an opening, add transition words, and have a closing statement. These are going to be collected for me to collect some data and then they will be sent home.

"We must meet hate with love." -Martin Luther King Jr.

Welcome back!! I hope you all had a wonderful Winter Break!!

This week we had quite a bit of fun hitting the ground running and learning again!!

In math, we used measuring tapes to measure how tall we were in inches to compare our heights with that of a Rockhopper and King Penguin!! Ask us if we remember some facts about the penguins! What do they look like? How tall are they? How many eggs do they lay? Which one is taller than the other? We also had to figure out how to convert inches to feet! How? Well, a Rockhopper penguin is 18 inches tall and we knew that a King Penguin was 3 feet tall; however, to find out how much taller the King Penguin was to the Rockhopper Penguin, we had to figure out how many inches makes 3 feet! Ask us if we remember how to do that! We added 12 + 12 + 12 !

In literacy, we are starting to get down to business!! We are starting to learn trickier words - those that have vowel teams! This week we learned ai, oa, ee, and ea vowel teams! Next week, we will be jumping into ie and ue, along with adding -ing and -ed to those words, and identifying long and short vowels. When teaching the vowel teams we also run into other words that sound the same as another word, but are spelt differently. It is important to point out the other word that sounds the same way and how it is spelt differently along with what the different meanings are. If you ever want to know what is going on in literacy and want to practice at home click here. We are currently on Unit 8.

Next week we will be taking our Superkids Mid-Year Assessment. This will asses the skills we taught in Unit 8, along with spelling words that we have hit all year long. Those spelling words are:

These spelling words hit: digraphs, memory words, -ing, -ed, silent/mommy e, and vowel teams. Remember, you can use the secret stories to help your kiddo in spelling.

Happy Winter Break everyone!! YAY we did it!!!

I should have sent a thank you note to everyone who was so kind in giving me a gift this year; however, if I somehow missed you or the note got lost on the way home - THANK YOU so much!! I am so grateful and appreciative of it all 💖

This week amongst all the holiday joy we took a math test on number lines and focused on counting by tens both on and off decade. In January we will pick back up with measuring, learning about penguins, and doing more work with story problems!

In literacy we learned about magic e words + ing or ed. When we add a suffix to a magic e word, you drop the e and the ending (joke becomes joking or joked.

In writing we finished our informational writing about our Holiday Traditions!!

With Holidays Around the World we finished our travels by learning about Hanukah in Israel. Hopefully your student shared all their knowledge with you!

The last two days have been full of fun learning about reindeer and doing Grinchy activities.

Presenting Authors: Addie & Luke!!

December 16, 2023

Hi everyone!! I finally started to feel a little more human yesterday - thank goodness. Now it is time for the home stretch - 5 more school days!😱

This letter will be pretty short and sweet.

Monday we will be reviewing for our math test - please see last week's email to continue to help your child understand what will be on it as it will be helpful!! This test is a pretty big one where kiddos trip up. We will take the test on Tuesday.

With me being absent, we will still have to finish up our iReady test this upcoming week. I am hoping everyone will be finished Monday; however, if there are dates that you know your child will not be in class this week- it would be helpful for me if you notify me, so I can make sure their iReady math test is done.

There will not be a spelling test; however, I will share with you the words we will be working on Monday-Wednesday:

**Tip: students can figure out the base word 'bake' and understand when adding 'ing' you drop the 'e.'

Spirit Days for next week:

Monday: School-Spirit Color Day

Tuesday: Hat Day

Wednesday: PJ Day (my class will be allowed to wear slippers and bring a stuffy for their class reward and we will have a free day in class at the end of the day)

Thursday: Mis-Match Day

Friday: Holiday Gear / Ugly Sweater Day

Thursday & Friday will be fun theme days in 1st grade! Thursday will be Reindeer Day and Friday will be Grinch Day!! Kiddos may wear anything that relates to that theme if they would like!

Looking ahead:

Star Student: Addie

Monday: Music / iReady Math

Tuesday: Music / Math Test / iReady Math (hopefully finished by today or before)

Wednesday: P.E. / iReady Math - if needed

Thank you for being patient and understanding this past week as I was sick. I hope you all are able to to stay healthy and well!! I look forward to being with the kiddos on Monday - I missed them!!

I hope y'all have a great rest of your weekend,

Ms. Abraham

December 8, 2023

Happy Friday!! Wow- December is a busy month for us!!

We have started our Holidays Around the World this week! We have made suitcases, passports, and boarding passes for all of our travels! This week we have learned about Christmas traditions and Diwali! Starting Monday classes will start rotating to different Teachers in first grade! Students will travel to China, Mexico, and Israel to learn about different holidays! Make sure to ask your kiddo all about the different holidays they have learned!!

In math, we are continuing adding and subtracting on a number line and figuring out missing numbers. Today we took our quiz and next Friday we will have our test! This is a tricky unit, as students need to figure out the rule: Are they counting by 5s? 10s? 20s or even 25s? Knowing if the equation is 50 + 20 = that they start at 50, and hop 2 times forward to land on the answer 70 and if it is subtraction they hop backwards. You can teach kiddos to hop two times, or '20' but you're counting by 10s. Students also need to be able to figure out the missing number counting forwards and backwards.

In literacy, we are continuing our learning of short and long vowels but with CVCe words! Spelling words for next week follow the CVCe pattern, but making it plural!

Here are some tips:

**-s is often added to a noun to make it name more than one thing, such as three bones and two skates. Skates is also a verb, like “Lily skates.” It explains what Lily is doing. She is what? She is skating.

**Verbs often end in -s when they tell what one person does.

**Figure the base word out first.

**mommy e / bossy e / silent e / magic e / whatever you may call it makes the vowel say its name!

Next week we will be doing our iReady math the 11th-13th.

We have quite a bit of grandparent letters and we are still reading through them!! We had one grandparent bring in some oranges to wish us good health!! Scroll down to see photo.

Looking ahead:

STAR STUDENT: REESE

Monday: Smart Lab / iReady Math

Tuesday: Art / iReady Math

Wednesday: Art / iReady Math

Thursday: Art

Friday: Music / Math Test / Library / Spelling Test

I will try and grade math quizzes so you can see how your kiddo is doing thus far on this unit and help prepare for the  math test on Friday. I will be in Boston this evening until Sunday - Jack's little brother goes to West Point so we will be at the Navy v. Army game all day tomorrow!! So, I will try and grade them at the airport!!

Thank you for all of the sweet messages of my engagment!!! Jack and I are so excited!!

Hope you all have a great weekend - stay healthy and well,

Ms. Abraham

December 1, 2023

Welcome back!! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break! 20 days until Winter Break!!

In math this week we started working with number lines. We can use number lines to show our work and our friend Tad helps us hop along as we find patterns. We have been not only adding and subtracting, but also finding missing numbers on the number line.

In literacy we learned that long vowels say their name like in we and go. When a vowel is at the end of a word or syllable, it is usually long and says its name (o|pen is pronounced open because the o is at the end of the first syllable). This rule helps us know when to read a long vs. short vowel! (Many of these rules and tips can be found on my Literacy tab, along with memory words and other patterns we are learning! We are currently in Unit 6.)

In writing we continued to work on descriptive writing and got to create and describe a snowman.

Next week we will start our Holidays Around the World unit by traveling to different countries! We have already started talking about different holiday traditions thanks to our grandparent letters that have been coming in! So cool to see that a lot of your grandparents have some of the same traditions - like oranges in stockings!!

A few things to note:

We will have a math quiz next Friday, December 8th and our math test will be Friday, December 15th. This test is a pretty difficult test for some students. Students will need to be able to fill in missing numbers and show work on a number line.

Some will look like this: 4, ____, 24, 34, ____, ______, 74, _____, 94, 104. Students need to be able to figure out the rule and fill in the correct missing number. There will also be some counting backwards. For number lines they will be given an equation such as: 30 + 50 = ___. Students will need to show their work on the number line to get the correct answer. We have been going over how it would not be 50 jumps, but 5 jumps because we are counting by 10s. There will be a fill in the blank number line where students need to figure out the rule that is not counting by tens such as: <----20---------______-------------60---->. Lastly, students will need to show work on a number line with a story problem.

Spelling words next week follows the "mommy e / bossy e / silent e rule." Refer to the mommy e secret story to help your kiddo + memory words:

I will not be here on Monday, so spelling lists will be going home today instead of Monday.

***We will be having a Grinch Day Friday, December 22 - I would LOVE to watch the PG version of the Grinch Stole Christmas (2001) there is a form in your child's folder. Please fill out if you are / are not okay with your child watching this Grinch. If we have one that cannot watch it, we will watch the older version of the Grinch :)

November 17, 2023

We did it!!! Happy Thanksgiving Break!! This will be another short and sweet update.

I will be sending home today a copy of numbers 1-20 and letters A-Z. I am noticing a lot of letters and numbers still being written backwards. If you could help your child keep tracing and writing their numbers and letters the correct way it will help when grading a lot!! Plus, I want to get them used to writing the correct way. I will attach both files to the email in case you'd like to print off more copies.

Spelling words for when we get back from break follow two rules: When a word has only ONE vowel and it is at the end, the vowel is usually long (says its’ name) and when a word has only ONE vowel and it ends in one or more consonants, the vowel is usually short (in its disguise).

Looking ahead:

Star student (Monday November 27th): Jackson

Before we head into Thanksgiving break I want to share how thankful I am for all of you!! I am thankful with how much you all have welcomed me into this community and how much love, support, and help I have received from you guys!!  I am also so thankful for all of your kiddos they always know how to make me laugh and smile. They are very hard workers and very responsible and respectful! I hope that you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving Break and Thanksgiving! May you have safe travels if you are traveling, a lot of relaxation, fun, love, and laughter, and great memories made!!

Happy Friday everyone!

A very short letter this week :)

Next Friday, November 17 we will have our own Thanksgiving celebration in the classroom by making homemade applesauce and enjoying it together in the afternoon. Could you please send in 1 peeled and chopped up apple on Friday Morning? We will drop them in the crockpot first thing in the morning! Thank you!

Our grandparent letters are written and we are working on getting the envelopes addressed. I will mail a letter for each address you sent me. My plan is to get them in the mail next week. If you haven't sent me an address, you can do so by emailing me grandparents names (real and what they are called) and their addresses.  I'll mail two letters and if you have anyone else you'd like the letter to go to, please reach out to me and I will make a copy! If you only listed one grandparent - you will be getting an extra on sent home :)

**It is THAT time of year!!** Sicknesses going around all over! There is something definitely going around our classroom, so just anytime your kiddo is not feeling well or presenting symptoms (or are sick) keep them home if possible. If they are sick please follow the 24 hour period - If Jim went home with a fever or throwing up 12:00 PM Wednesday, he could not return to school on Thursday. He could return Friday if he had not had a fever/thrown up in the last 24 hours.

NO SPELLING TEST NEXT WEEK. If you would like something to practice here are some words:

THANK YOU to the volunteers that came in this week to help with our letters. I appreciate it a ton!!!

Here's what's happening next week:

Next week is Wilder's Scholastic Book Fair. We will visit the book fair on Tuesday so the kids can fill out a wish list.

Grandparent Letters and Holiday Traditions

December will be here before we know it and I am so excited to let you all know that we will be studying Holiday Cultures and Traditions around the World.

One piece that goes along with holiday traditions that we will be doing this year is writing to an older relative and asking them what they did growing up around this time of year (December)!  It is an incredible way to connect generations and for students to understand a tradition other than the one they currently know!  I would love to have this be a "Grandparent Letter", if possible, or a relative that is 1-2 generations older than your student.

I will mail out two letters. I’ll send you a copy of the letter if you’d like to send it out to additional family members!  Please fill out the Google Form below with the two grandparents' names and addresses. I will get these in the mail next week and am asking them to write back no later than December 1. The letters will come to school where we’ll read them, compare and contrast traditions, and use the map to locate where grandparents currently live or where they grew up.

If you do not feel that this is something you or your family can reasonably do at this time, please let me know and we will figure out an alternative.

Thank you so much for helping us out with our learning!

Click here for the Google Form to enter Grandparent names and addresses

Please fill out the form twice - once for each grandparents/address

Dear Parents,

What a fun Halloween party! Our room parents did a fantastic job planning a fun party complete with snacks for the class! Thank you to all the volunteers who came and helped run the activities or sent in materials/food for the party.  I have a few pictures at the bottom of the page!

Next week in writing we will start learning about how to write a letter. Our first letter will be a letter to grandparents asking them to tell us about their December traditions.  We ask the grandparents to write back and then we share the letters with the class.  The kids really enjoy hearing about the traditions their grandparents enjoyed when they were 6 and 7 years old and comparing them to the traditions they enjoy! Please fill out the Google Form with the name/s and addresses the Grandparent or older relative you'd like me to mail their letter to. You can send me one or two addresses and I'll mail up to two letters. I'm happy to send you a copy of the letter to mail out to additional relatives if you'd like. If you would like this, just shoot me an email. Thank you for helping make this a fun project for the kids!

Next week is the First grade Veteran's Day performance. The first performance will be on Thursday, November 9 from 6:00-7:00pm. Have your child come to the classroom at 5:45pm. Go get yourself a seat and I'll bring them down to the gym.
On Friday, November 10th, they will perform for the school at 8:30 am.

There will be a math test on Wednesday. Students will be shown a picture of the top row of a number rack where certain amount of beads are shown. There will be a screen/wall hiding the other beads - students will need to figure out how many beads are behind the screen/wall. EX: On the top number rack there are a total of 10 beads. Say it shows 6 beads. Students need to be able to write the number 4, as 4 are hidden behind the wall.  Students will be timed on adding stacked equations. Students will also be shown unifex cubes.  EX: Say they show 1 row of unifex cubes that amount to 10 and next to  it has 6 unifex cubes. Students need to be able to write that there are 16. Lastly, students will need to be able to solve a word problem!

Spelling words next week follow -ing and -ed. However, students will need to remember this rule: "When a word has only one vowel and ends in only one consonant, double the consonant and then add the ending." EX: hug is a CVC word (consonant, vowel, consonant). It will follow the rule stated above -> hugged / hugging. Students need to be able to recognize whether the base word has one vowel and ends in only one consonant as it won't always follow this rule. We will practice how to decode and use this rule in class. Please also use this rule at home to practice the spelling words. :)

**If you have a change in plans on how your child is getting home - please let me know in advance as it is super helpful on my end. If you find out after 1:45 PM, or if you do not hear a response from me after 1:15 PM, please contact the front office to let them let me know, because I will not get the chance to look at my emails until after dismissal after 1:45 PM :)

Here's what's coming up next week:

Star of the Week: Natalie
Monday: Music
Tuesday:  Music
Wednesday: Music / Math Test
Thursday: P.E. / Evening Veteran's Day performance
Friday: P.E. / Veteran's Day performance for school at 8:30 am / library

Ms. Abraham

Here is  a note from music teacher Mrs. Gonzales about the performance.

Dear Parents:

The first grade students will be performing two Veterans Day shows. The first show will be on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023 and the second will be on Friday, Nov. 11, 2022.  These two programs are important as we take time to honor those who have served or are currently serving in the Armed Forces.

Show Details:

Date: Nov. 9 at 6:00 PM  - this show is for all of the first grade family, friends, and Veterans.

Date: Nov. 10 at 8:30 AM - this will be an assembly for the Wilder student body, 1st grade families with Veterans attending, as well as guest Veterans.

Dress: Please have your child wear red, white and/or blue to both performances.

The November 9 show at 6:00 PM will be for parents, family, and friends to attend.  Please have your 1st grade child arrive by 5:45 PM that evening to line up and get ready in their classrooms.

We will be honoring the Veterans with a roll call. If you or a family member has served in the Armed Forces, please email the following information and a picture of your Veteran to wilderveterans@gmail.com by October 18 so that we can honor their service through a slide show presentation.

Name of Veteran ____________________  Branch of Service __________________________

Dates of Service ____________________ Name of student __________________

Veterans relationship to student _______________________

Thank you,

Mrs. Gonzales

Music Teacher

If you know that your child will not be able to attend the performances, would you please let me know by emailing me at agonzales@lps.k12.co.us?  Thank you!

October 27, 2023

Happy Friday! I cannot believe Halloween is on Tuesday!!

It's starting to get chilly! It's a good idea to have your child bring a coat or even a sweatshirt to keep in their backpack for days like this. They will go outside to play unless the temperature drops below 20 degrees or it's too wet.

On Tuesday, Oct. 31, we will have our Halloween parade and party at 1:15. If you are coming to see the parade, you can stand in the grass outside of our classroom (door 11) or anywhere around the school. The parade starts at 1:15 with the Kindergarten class and it will move around the school with each class joining as it passes. We will join the parade, walk around the school and return to the classroom where our room parents will be waiting for us! The Halloween party will go until the end of the day. Parents are welcome to come for the parade and party. Please remember that cosutumes must be non-violent and have no pretend weapons. Students should bring their costume to school and we will change into costumes just before the parade.

First grade has been working hard with music teacher Mrs. Gonzales on our Veterans Day Assembly. There will be an evening performance for families on Thursday, November 9 at 6:00 pm and a day time performance for the school on Friday, November 10 at 8:30 am. You will be receiving more information from Mrs. Gonzales. You can also email her with questions.
agonzales@lps.k12.co.us

Writing: We have come back to personal narratives. At conferences I shared with you their first personal narrative. They are doing a great job adding more and more details and sequencing the events in their story. We also are really focusing on putting punctuation at the end of sentences and starting each sentence with a capital letter.

Math: Equations to 20, story problems where they are solving for a missing addend or a missing sum. We are learning math games that require doubling a number then adding or subtracting one from that number.

Science: We'll explore animal sounds by learning about how sounds are made.

Social Studies: We will be reading and discussing short reading passages that focus on our Country and it's symbols. Watch for these reading passages to come home. These will be fun to read and talk about together.

Reading/spelling: This week we learned about 'er' and the sound it makes in a word. We also learned about the ending 'ed' and how it makes the sound /ed/ /d/ or /t/ at the end of the word. Ask your child to tell you the 'secret story' of 'er and 'ed'. I added, /ed/, er - ir - ur, and Sneaky Y secret stories on the secret story page!

Spelling words next week - focuses on /ed/ and memory words. Students will need to recognize that /ed/ makes the /d/ and /t/ sound. So, if they hear that sound to recognize in the spelling word that it is /ed/

I know y'all are eager to volunteer in the classroom!! October has been VERY busy. I need to make the sign up sheet for the entire year for volunteers - so be on the look out. I am hoping no later than mid-November it will be up :) Please be patient with me as I have never done this before!!

I wanted y'all to know how I do my seating in the classroom. I always change the seats up after every break. So, after Thanksgiving break - new seats/tables. After Winter break - new seats/tables and after Spring Break - new seats/tables. If your child is coming home and expressing to you that they cannot focus and you notice it is a routine and you would like me to change seats - I can definitely help with that! Just shoot me an email :)

Going home today:

We had so much fun with movie, PJ, stuffy, an EXTRA snack day!! Scroll down for the photo :)

October 13, 2023

Happy Friday the 13th!!

We had a great week learning so much! We took our test in math and I am so happy with how hard everyone worked - they did great!! We also learned how much a penny, nickel, and dime are worth. We also have been working on how to solve story problems.

In literacy we practiced a lot with our -ing, -ang, -ong, and -ung words! It's very important to be able to idnetify these sounds in words that way we can use all of these spelling patterns we are learning to spell correctly! We did some fun activities: a race against table groups to see who could come up with the most -ing, -ang, -ong, and -ung words. Then we had to identify the ending sound of the pictures we had and glue it to the correct ending sound.

Next week is a SHORT week! We are going to be doing a lot of fun learning!! As far as spelling words go I will be giving you next week's spelling words along with the following week's spelling words. I know it seems like a lot but because we are having short weeks I want to make sure we are still hitting those important spelling patterns/memory words. How we are going to do it: I will give you both lists now (fridge list on Monday)  for you to practice the next two weeks. On Tuesday, October 24th I will tell you the 10 I will pull from both lists to test them on Friday, October 27th! Here is that list:

Focusing on consonant -le words and memory words:

Spelling list 2: focusing on -er and -ed.

To help with both of these lists, help your kiddo identify how to spell by breaking them up into syllables! The consontant -le's we are working with -ble, -kle, -tle, and -dle. You can help your kiddos identify how to stretch and spell by breaking it up with syllables: bub-ble, lit-tle, pic-kle, etc. Same for the second list: af-ter, ne-ver, twist-ed, print-ed, etc.

I will give you both of these spelling lists to hang on your fridge on Monday!

Here’s what’s coming up next week:

Star of the Week: NONE

- Water!

If you haven’t signed up for a conference yet, please click here to available dates and times.

Totally Terrific Teacher tickets went home earlier this week. This is a fund raising activity done by the teachers each year. Teachers from each grade level choose a fun activity to do with a small group of students. Students may purchase ‘chances’ to win that activity by filling out a ticket. Each ticket costs $1.00. If you would like to have your child purchase tickets for a chance to win a fun activity, please fill out the tickets and return in an envelope that includes the tickets and money and return to school. Next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday students will put their tickets in a tub for the teacher activity they’d like to win! Winners will be announced the following week!

This week in writing we are finishing up our non-fiction writing about Mount Everest. Next week we’ll start learning about opinion writing!

In math we continue to practice strategies for adding and subtracting with fluency and accuracy. Look at last week's letter to see what will be on the test this upcoming Tuesday, the 10th.

In literacy our new sound for spelling and writing was ‘th’. Sounds we are reviewing are all of our short vowels and ch, sh, and wh. Next week we will be having spelling words that have the /ng/ digraph. Here are the spelling words:

You will get your word list on Monday!

The students have been working hard in music to learn their songs for our upcoming First Grade Performance on November 9 and 10. If your child has a speaking part, their lines were sent home on Monday in their Blue folder. If you are unsure if your child has a speaking part, ask them or email Mrs. Gonzales at agonzales@lps.k12.co.us  More information will be coming home soon regarding the performance.

Next week is classfied staff appreciation week. We have a para/aide, Maike Hirst, (Ms. H) who helps us SO much in our classroom. She helps prep materials for lessons, helps with small groups, and helps us individually! We are SO thankful for her. She makes my days so much easier!! We will be making her thank you cards in class; however, if you would like to say thank you to her as well I know she would feel SO appreciated.

A message from Kim Hogue:

We are thrilled to have the support of Kim Hogue, the Gifted and Talented Facilitator, three times a week.  Don’t be fooled by her GT support role as she will be supporting all kids - not just those who may show signs of giftedness.  She will work with very fluid groupings of kids based on specific math learning goals.

I hope you all have a great weekend - stay healthy!!!

Happy long weekend for you guys!!

Sorry in advance - this is a long one!

I hope everyone had a great week as crazy as it might of been! We had SO much fun at the zoo - thank you to all of the parents who volunteered to chaperone and even those who came along to hang out with us - we appreciate you!!

Thank you to those who did send in hand sanitizer - we are still pretty short on hand sanitizer - I go through one probably a week!

This week in literacy we started our informative writing! You can ask your child what an informative writing is: it ________ us!!!! (I have them repeat it quite often, haha! For informative writing, we are getting to learn together as a whole group how to pick a topic, find interesting/unique facts, organizing our opening, facts, and closing then final writing TOGETHER on this unit. This way, when we hit informative writing again in December, students will be able to have a stronger foundation on how to find facts on their laptop (using epic!) and write on their own paper all independently!

In Superkids we talked about digraph wh and how it makes the /hw/ sound. We also talked about how it can be difficult and trick us, because a lot of the times we hear /w/ instead of /hw/. We went over how who, what, where, when, and why are question words and we read together in our Superkids books to help build our fluency!

Things you can practice: all of the digraphs we have  learned so far: sh, ch, wh, -ck - and next week /th/. You could give your child words that have these digraphs in them and then stretch/map it out to help figure out how many sounds they have. Then, you can have them identify that sound with the digraph and spell the word. After administering an assessment to see where students are right now, I did see a lot of kiddos swap or not know their short and long vowel sounds. Short vowels make the /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, and /u/ sound while long vowels say their name /a_e/, /ee/, /i_e/, /o_e/, /u_e/. Practicing being able to identify what is a short v. long vowel sound also helps with spelling!

Spelling words for next week focuses on the /th/ digraph at the beginning and end of a word:

You will get a fridge list on Monday!

In math we started getting familiar with dominoes and how we can look at it horizontally and make a horizontal equation, then, when we turn it vertically we can make a vertical equation. We also learned about fact families! I tell students, a fact family means we can only use those 3 numbers. For instance, if we are working with 10, 8, and 2. 10, 8, and 2 are a family! Something I noticed was that students might have done 8-2 = 6. I asked, "Is 6 apart of this fact family?" No, it isn't. So that they could see that when doing a fact family we are only using those 3 numbers.

On Tuesday we will have a math checkpoint/quiz. Students will need to be able to look at a domino horizontally and write an addition equation. Then, they will need to be able to look at a domino vertically, know the total of two dominos, and compare the numbers. Is it greater than, less than, or equal to?

Then, on Tuesday, Oct. 10th, we will be having our math test. What will be on the test? Students will need to be able to look at a domino and figure out the missing dots. For example: there will be a domino like the one below (but the one with dots will be on the left instead of right). There will be a number on top of the domino - let's say 8. Students then must be able to figure out how many dots they need to get to 8 in fill in the equation. ____ + ____ = _____. Which they would write: 3 + 5 = 8. Last year, lots of students would just do 0 + 5 = 5.

Students will also need to be able to find the missing number in a fact family. For example if it says

8 + 2 = _____ , ____ + 2 = 10, 10 - 8 =  ______, and 10 - ____ = 2. Students must be able to fill in the blank. Students will need to hear a story problem and circle the correct equation that goes with it, solve a story problem using numbers and pictures, and also be able to add stacked equations. These are all stuff we have and are going to learn so if you would like that extra practice at home for a few minutes - I encourage it!

In students folders: Please take out all of the papers. We will be putting October's behavior sheet and the log to log how many books you read in October!

Also, if you see a paper that goes home with corrections or a smiley face it is more than likely an exit ticket :) I do exit tickets sometimes at the end of our lessons to see who got what I just taught and who didn't; that way, I can meet with them in a group or touch base again in the next lesson. It is not  a grade!

Whew I know this is a long letter - bare with me!

CONFERENCES:  Wow conferences are in TWO weeks, I cannot believe!! Conferences will ONLY be held in the afternoons Monday October 16-Wednesday October 18th and in the morning of Thursday October 19th.

Please sign up ASAP so you can get the time that works best for you: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C084EAFA62AA5FDC25-44746790-fall#/

Please see this letter from LPS that was sent to you to know why we ONLY offer these times:

Dear LPS Parents and Guardians:

Littleton Public Schools is looking forward to our fall parent-teacher conferences. These conferences provide an important opportunity for us to share and discuss your child’s academic and social-emotional progress. We greatly appreciate you taking the time to meet with school staff and share information about your child. Your insight and perspective are essential as we partner to support your child.

At the elementary level, October 19 is a non-student day to provide time for school staff to meet with parents and guardians. Additionally, conferences are scheduled at other times during the week of October 16-October 19. Conferences are not available on Friday, October 20 as this is a compensation day for the additional hours school staff work to support parent-teacher conferences. We appreciate your understanding that conferences outside of this week may not be possible. Educators have many responsibilities before, during, and after the school day and are not required to conference outside of our scheduled conference times.

At the secondary level, schools have started their parent-teacher conferences in a variety of formats and structures that most fit the needs of their school communities. Some conferences are held in person, while others are virtual conferences to accommodate family schedules.

With that being said, not all secondary schools will be hosting parent-teacher conferences on October 19, since many schools have hosted conferences prior to that date. This date is a non-student day. Your student’s school will communicate their conference schedules to help families plan accordingly. Like the elementary level, conferences are not available on Friday, October 20 as this is a compensation day for the additional hours school staff work to support parent-teacher conferences.

We look forward to seeing you during our fall conferences.

Sincerely,

Linda Jones
Director of Elementary Education

September 22, 2023

It's the weekend - yay! And tomorrow is the first day of FALL!!

We will be having a short week next week! On Monday we will take our first field trip to the Denver Zoo to enrich our science unit called Animal Reporters! Thank you to those who have volunteered to chaperone a group!

If any other parents would like to meet us there and join a group, you are welcome to meet us there. Please let me know if you plan on coming along. Students will need a sack lunch, a water bottle and a snack. If you would like the cafeteria to make a lunch for your child, please let me know by the end of the day today. The kids will be bringing their backpack to carry their lunch, a jacket, a hat if they need one, and their water bottle. Please have your child dress for the weather and wear comfy shoes as there will be a lot of walking. We will leave the school at about 9:15 and return around 1:45.

If you noticed, there is a Superkids QR code taped to your child's folder. This is for you to scan - with a camera (phone or computer) to get them logged into Superkids if you would like them to use it at home!

IN NEED: We are low on hand sanitizer. We did not get a lot at the beginning of the year, and I give it to the students everyday after both recesses. If you could donate some, that would be awesome! :)

Spelling words: I have had a couple of questions around the expectations on spelling words. Spelling words are expected to be mostly practiced at home. We do not go over spelling words in class everyday - only some days. However, our literacy instruction always involve the rule for the spelling list that is for that week so students can learn and practice to help them decode those spelling words. For instance, this week we had the digraph rule /sh/. While we did not practice as a whole class our spelling words everyday, we practiced many words that had the /sh/ sound in it. If there are memory words as spelling words, they pop up in our shared reading. Students do practice their spelling words independently when my para and I work on small groups. I do not take spelling tests as a grade, rather for a 'show what you know'. This helps me know what students need more practice in what area in literacy instruction and what they may need to work on when they meet with me for small groups. Even though I do not take them for a grade, please still practice spelling words at home daily as this strengthens your childs decoding skills when it comes to reading and writing :D

With that being said here are next weeks spelling words:

I know it is a shorter week next week, but we will touch base on spelling words on Monday in the morning and throughout the week. I will give the spelling test out on Thursday :) Next weeks spelling words are memory words and will follow the /wh/ rule which makes the /hw/ sound and also hit /sh/ words along with blends.

Memory words are words students should automatically decode without thought. You might hear them also be called heart words. To help with these words - we put a heart over the letter(s) that is trying to trick us!

If you ever want to look ahead or see what we are doing in literacy please click here.

Hi everyone!! I hope everyone has been having a great week :)

We finished our iReady math and reading - YAY! I am very proud of them for working hard and trying their best! When we have conferences next month, I will go over these results with you.

This week in writing we have been learning about personal narratives!! Ask your child what the chant is for personal narratives? (A true story, about me that is memorable!) We will continue narratives next week.

In literacy, we have been working on the /ch/ sound in both reading and writing. You can always check the literacy tab to see the spelling pattern we are working on as well as the memory words.

In science we are now learning about the different types of animal skin and how it helps the animal survive in their habitat!

In math we are focusing on knowing our addition facts to 10 with fluency! DreamBox is a great resource for working on math at home! Their login information is tapped into their blue folder.

Picture Day is on Friday, Sept. 22. We usually have our picture taken in the morning.

Thank you to the 5 parents who volunteered to come along with us to the Zoo on Monday, Sept. 25. I will be reaching out to you soon with more information. If you'd like to come along and meet your child's group there that is not a problem! You'll  only need to pay admission. Let me know if you're coming so I can let the group leader know.

It's the WEEKEND - and a long one too - YAY!!!

We had such a great week learning to quick count by fives using our number racks and reviewing memory words, short vowel sounds , and how to make a boring sentence fun and exciting!! (Ask your child how they turned "I see a penguin" into an awesome sentence that painted a picture for the reader)

Next week will be our last week of review with our Super Kids curriculum. I will send home their SK review workbook next Friday. Look through it with your child and if they were absent and have any unfinished pages, you can do them at home!

Today was our first day going to the library. Help your child remember to return their checked out books so they can check out more on Friday!

A Message from our new Media Center Coordinator Mrs. Maxwell

Hello Wilder Families!  Book checkouts will begin the week of August 28th.  We are so excited to do everything we can to support your young reader!

To help with these efforts, we have updated our circulation policy.  Every student at Wilder is starting this year with no overdue books--a clean slate!  However, our library is still missing a lot of books.  So if you could take the time to look around your house and return any CLC books, we would appreciate that greatly!

Going forward, we are limiting the total number of books checked out at one time to 4 per student.  If a student has more than 4 books checked out, they will need to return one before they check out another.

Having fewer books out at a time will help us provide more materials for everyone.  We never want to do anything that would discourage a child from reading or having access to books.  So if you have a late library book that you can't find, just let us know and we'll remove it from your child's account.

Thank you so much for everything you do to support the Creative Learning Center at Wilder.  We have amazing resources and awesome readers and that is all because of you!  We are so excited to begin circulation and get books in kids' hands!

August 25, 2023

Dear Parents,

Back to School Night is on Tuesday, August 29 from 5:15 – 6:00. This is an evening for parents only. When you arrive at the school, head on down to the classroom and find your child’s table. I look forward to seeing everyone!

This week has been SO fun!! We've learned a lot with twin popsicles, using the two sticks to help us count by 2's! We have also learned a little bit on how to count by 5's! We have been reviewing with letter names/sounds by walking and dancing around the classroom, stopping at a letter when the music stops, and writing a word that starts with that letter and so much more!!

A couple of things that are really helping is our morning snack time. Kids are pretty hungry by the time we go to morning recess at 10:00. Having a hearty snack keeps them going until lunch at 11:30. Also, having a water bottle in the classroom is really helpful in keeping them hydrated on these hot days.

In a couple of weeks first grade will be doing our beginning of year iReady assessment. This is an online assessment that we give to students at the beginning, middle and end of the school year. Each student has their own Chromebook in the classroom. If you haven’t already done so, please send in a pair of headphones for your child to use at school. We use Chromebooks frequently so they will need their own headphones. Thank you!

Going home in folders today:

-Skill of the week 'homework'. You do not have to do this - only if you want. I don't need to see it either, so it can come home and stay home. Just something fun to talk and discuss with your child and have them do if you would like :)

Behavior chart: I am hoping to start this next week. Students at the end of the day will reflect on their day. This will go back and forth everyday.

If there are papers on the stick with the stars, that will  go home and stay home. If there are papers on the side with the pencil, they will need to be looked at and returned back to me the next day!

A note from the PTO:

Families, please sign up for the cakewalk for the fall festival!  We hope to see everyone there. Thank you, PTO.

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f4ea5a92ea6fbc52-fall#/

The Wilder Fall Festival is on Friday, September 8

I will be out of the classroom tomorrow, Friday, August 25. If you need to get a note to your child regarding a change in after school plans, please call the office and they will get a note to the teacher.

Here’s what’s happening next week:

Specials:

Monday: P.E.
Tuesday: PE / BTS night for parents @5:15
Wednesday: PLC late start / PE
Thursday: Smart Lab
Friday: Smart Lab - library checkout

Looking Ahead:

Monday, September 4 – No School
Friday, September 8 – Fall Festival 5:00 – 7:00

Have a great weekend together!

Ms. Abraham

August 18, 2023

Yay! We did it!! The first week of first grade and wow what a great one it was. We all had such a great time getting to know each other, learning expectations, how to be a bucket filler instead of a bucket dipper, and writing a lot so we can get to know each other!!

I want to start off by saying THANK YOU for all of the donations off our classroom wishlist. This helps set us up for the school year :) Some donations were sent without a note saying who from, so if I did not email or send a thank you card home please know we are so grateful for your donation!!

IMPORTANT: Please DO NOT send snacks containing peanut butter, almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, pecans, pistachios and walnuts. We have students with SEVERE peanut and tree nut allergies. I have sent a letter home about this. Thank you for understanding!

***GOING HOME TODAY****

Just a reminder that students may bring a snack to eat during morning recess. The kids are pretty hungry by this time and a snack helps them make it until lunch at 11:30. Also, having a water bottle in the classroom is helpful on these hot days.

If your child needs breakfast in the morning it is ONLY served between 7:35-7:50. After 7:50 students must come to their class.

***Star Student: I noticed I made an error on the dates, so your child might have a new date! You will know more about this on back to school night!

Next week we'll start the review lessons in Super Kids to review letter sounds, capital and lower case letter formation. We'll also review types of sentences and the punctuation that goes with each one. To work on comprehension, there are some fun stories that we'll read as well!

In math we will get students familiar with routines and manipulatives. We'll focus on counting forward and backward by 1's, 2's and 5's.

Here's what happening next week:

Specials:

Monday: Art

Tuesday: All classes will go to Gym for a PBIS lesson

Wednesday: Music

Thursday: Music

Friday: Music

We'll start library checkout soon. I'll keep you updated on that.

Thank you all again for being so welcoming towards me!! I am so excited for this school year.

I hope y'all have a great weekend,

Ms. Abraham

Check below for some photos from this week! I took videos too, but I am still learning on how to get videos on here! If you are not okay with me posting a picture/video with your child in it - please let me know!
