6th Grade Back to School Handout

"Amplify Science is a K–8 science curriculum rooted in the research-based Do, Talk, Read, Write, Visualize model of learning. In each unit of the program, students engage with science and engineering practices, figure out disciplinary core ideas, and utilize and apply crosscutting concepts in multiple modalities across thoughtful, structured lessons that are centered around engaging anchor phenomena. Each unit features a unique mix of activities that provide students with multiple points of entry into the instruction."  (https://amplify.com/programs/amplify-science/)

Upper elementary and junior high uses a science curriculum, Amplify Science.  Amplify Science includes hands-on science activities, materials in print, and digital tools to support learning.  The program is student-friendly with both online and paper materials. In each science unit, students take on the role of a scientist to investigate a real-world problem.  The real word problem provides students with relevant contexts through which the students investigate phenomena.   The 6th grade curriculum also includes two units where students become engineering interns.  Engineering Internships engage and immerse students in the type of work that professionals do. They situate learning in the context of doing, helping students engage with science ideas and practices as well as ways of thinking—not in the abstract, but in the context of simulated real-world activities or problems while putting students in a science and/or engineering role and providing them with a problem to solve.

5th grade units for the school year include:   Patterns of Earth and Sky; Modeling Matter; Earth Systems; and Ecosystem Restoration.  5th grade also includes a health unit that is not included in the Amplify science curriculum but that uses an appropriate grade level curriculum.

6th grade units for the school year include:  Microbiome; Metabolism; Metabolism Engineering Internship; Traits and Reproduction; Thermal Energy; Ocean, Atmosphere, and Climate; Weather Patterns, Earth's Changing Climate; and Earth's Changing Climate Engineering Internship.

Students continue using the same Amplify Science Curriculum for 7th and 8th grade as well to keep the consistency in the student's science learning and to ensure all standards are taught to be well prepared for high school sciences.
