Parent Letters

May 23, 2024

Dear Parents,

It has been such an honor to be a part of your child's life this last school year. I love this class and have thoroughly enjoyed being their teacher and getting to know each of them this year. The growth, both academically and socially,  has been incredible to watch. I'm so happy and excited to send them off to second grade! I have enjoyed getting to know all of you as well! Thank you for your support and partnership this year.

Earlier this week I sent home a summer learning mat with daily suggestions for keeping their skills sharp. Keeping a reading routine over the summer is one of the most important things you can do to help kids maintain their momentum in reading and enter 2nd grade strong!

Enjoy your summer together! Relax, have fun, make memories and I look forward to seeing everyone again in the fall!

Fondly,

Mrs. Hoeckelberg

Dear Parents,

The kids have been asking for a YES day all year and today was their lucky day! Ask your child about some of the things I said "Yes" to today! :)

Next week I'll be sending home materials a little each day so as not to load them down too much on the last day of school. Remind your child to unload their backback each day.

Traditionally, I like to have kids bring their favorite game board from home to  play with their friends during our math time on the last week of school. Next week your child is welcome to bring in a game (with your permission of course) to play. Each day kids will have the opportunity to play a different board or card game. I ask that it's a game your child knows how to play and can teach others to play it. It's a lot of fun and it gives kids a chance to play many games. You can have your child bring in a game on Monday and I'll send it home by Thursday.

End of year iReady reports are coming home today in your child's green folder.

Also, coming home is a Summer Learning Mat with ideas to keep your child learning all summer. Next week, workbooks (SuperKids, Math and Number Corner) will be coming home. Any pages we did not get to this year can be done over the summer if you'd like!

On Tuesday, we will walk to the Burning Tree park for our First Grade end of year picnic. If you can walk over with us, meet us outside of our classroom door at 10:00. I'll have the parents spread out along our line to supervise and help us cross streets. Kids will carry their backpack with their lunch, water bottle, a small blanket or beach towel to sit on. They may also bring a yard toy to play with. Keep in mind there will be all four 1st grade classes there so the toy needs to be a safe toy that won't hurt anyone. Please avoid hard baseballs, bats, la crosse sticks and balls, etc. If you are unable to walk with us, feel free to join us for even a little bit. It's a fun day to celebrate the end of first grade! (Keep in mind that Kinder is having their author celebration at the same time so parking will be tough.)

On Monday, kids may bring in a teddy bear for Teddy Bear Day. I have some reading and math activities for us to do with our Teddy Bears!

Tomorrow is Wilder's SteamFest. There is nothing you need to do to prepare. They will each receive a SteamFest tshirt to bring home!

Friday, May 24 – Last Day of School  11:50 dismissal. We will be eating lunch at school that day.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions !

Dear Parents,

Field Day was fun! The kids had a great time even with the chilly breeze!

On Tuesday, May 14 we will go on a Field Trip to Roxborough State Park. We will load buses at 9:15 and return around 1:00. We will have a picnic lunch at the park so please pack a sack lunch for your child on Tuesday. We will be hiking with a nature guide so have your child wear good hiking shoes. Dressing in layers is a good idea, too. The forecast right now on my Pinpoint Weather app shows a high of 73 and a chance for afternoon thunderstorms. We will keep an eye on the forecast and make decisions as it gets closer.   The students will be able to carry their backpack with a water bottle in it. They could also carry a hat or extra jacket. They do not want us to have food on the trail so all lunch boxes will be kept at the visitor center for us. Putting their name on their lunch box or paper bag will be very helpful!   On this field trip, the nature guides would like us to limit the number of parent volunteers to 2 per group of 10. I have 5 parent volunteers signed up to come along. If you weren't able to sign up for this field trip, please plan on joining us for the class picnic. The more parents walking with us to the park, the better!

Friday, May 17 Wilder SteamFest. This Wilder tradition is a fun day that focuses on science, technology, engineering, art, and music. You do not need to do anything for it.

Tuesday, May 21 – First Grade Picnic at the Burning Tree neighborhood park.  All parents and siblings are welcome to come! I'd love to have a lot of parents walk over with us to help with crossing streets.  If you are walking with us, please meet us outside at our classroom door at 10:00. Kids will carry their lunch, water bottle, a towel or blanket to sit on, toys to play with, hat, etc. in their backpack. If you are unable to walk over with us, plan on meeting us there, even for just a little bit! We should arrive around 10:30. Kinder is having their author celebration at the same time so parking will be tough.

Friday, May 24 – Last Day of School  11:50 dismissal

The kids filled their PAWS jar again so they decided that tomorrow should be Stuffy and slipper day! The may bring a stuffed animal and bring slippers to change into once they get to school.

Enjoy your weekend and Happy Mother's Day to all you amazing moms!!

Dear Parents,

Today's Author's Celebration was very special! Thank you for coming. I put a few pictures on the photo album page on this website. All writing went home today so if you were not able to be here, have your own Author's Celebration at home tonight!

We have a field trip to Roxborough State park coming up on May 14. I can take 5 volunteers. The link to sign up is above. If you're unable to come along on this field trip, put Tuesday, May 21 on your calendar and come along with us on a walk to Burning Tree Park for our end of year first grade picnic. We will leave the school around 10:30. I need lots of parents to walk with us as and support as we cross Platte Canyon.

This week we finished up our iReady reading assessment and will begin the math part next week. We only work for about 20-30 minutes a day on it so no one gets over tired.

Here's what's coming up:

Thursday, April 18, 2024

Dear Parents,

Our When I Grow Up books are finished and the kids got to see them this week! They were pretty excited to see all of their hard work finally finished! I want to thank Nicki Poulos for her help in researching places to copy and bind the books and for taking time to get the manuscript to the printer. Thank you to all the other parents who helped with the laminating! This really was a team effort!

Next Friday, April 26 we will be having an Author's Celebration in the classroom from 12:15 - 1:00. If you have time to stop in, the kids would love to share some of their writing with you! I will have some refreshments, as well. Please enter and check in at the main entrance then come on down to the classroom! Students will be bringing their writing home that day so if you are unable to join us, you can enjoy listening to their work at home that evening.

This week in math we've been focusing on counting pennies, nickels, dimes, and for a challenge we've worked with quarters, too! At home, grab a handful of coins for your child to sort and count!

We're finishing up learning about and writing poetry this week. This is a very creative group of poets!

We just finished Unit 14 in our SuperKids curriculum. We only have two more. They've learned a lot of spelling patterns this year. This week we learned that the c and g will make its soft sound when followed by an i, e or y. (circus, city, giraffe, gym). When reading at home, be on the look out for these soft sounds!

In science, we'll start exploring and learning about plants.

Friday, May 3rd is our last day of checkouts.  The following Friday, May 10th is when all library materials will be due.

Dear Parents,

We learned a lot about the solar eclipse on Monday. Steve Spangler visited our classroom and we had fun going outdoors to view it with our eclipse glasses. I added some pictures of this on the Photos page.

Our When I Grow Up book is almost finished. I have some amazing parents working hard to help to get it finialized. We'll let you know when it's all done. If you wrote a check to Studentreasures for the original book, those checks were found by UPS and returned to me. I handed them out to students today and you'll find them in their blue folder in an envelope.

In math we took our Unit 7 assessment today. The focus on this assessment was counting up and back by 1's, 5's, 10's and adding two digit numbers without regrouping. Counting coins at home is a great way to practice! Next week, counting coins will be our focus.

In writing, we are starting to write poems. We'll continue next week with different types of poems!

In reading and writing the oy and oi sound was our focus.

Here’s what’s happening next week:

Star of the Week: Ellen

Monday: Music

Tuesday: PE

Wednesday: PE

Thursday: PE / Library checkout

Friday: SmartLab

We'll continue to switch specials times with the upper grades and do an afternoon snack recess rather than a morning snack recess. We'll be back to our regular schedule on Friday.

Dear Parents,

It sounds like everyone had a really nice Spring Break. It is nice being back with the kids as we start the last couple of months of first grade!

I’ve had some good news about our lost/destroyed UPS box holding our When I Grow Up manuscript and order payments. UPS found the envelope holding the order forms and the checks. They returned it to the Studentreasures company who is going to send it back to me. If you paid by check, I’ll return the check once I receive them. They also found 9 pages of student writing and 4 pages with the picture. They were a little torn and dirty, but we were still glad to get them. We are currently working on re-writing and re-drawing the pictures so we can still have a book. I’ll keep you updated!

In addition to writing our book, the kids also had fun using adjectives in descriptive writing. Each student designed a monster and used adjectives to describe the monster. These are currently hanging in the hall. I’ll send them home soon.

In math we are using the Hansel and Gretel story to practice counting up and back by 1’s 5’s and 10’s. At home or in the car, have fun practicing this. Counting back by 5’s  starting at numbers up to 120 is a little trickier!

In science we are finishing up our unit called Patterns in the Sky. The solar eclipse on Monday is happening at the perfect time! You should have received a letter from me on Wednesday afternoon about our viewing of the eclipse. Here is part of the letter I sent home:

“Please see the attached letter from Mrs. Reinert about the eclipse. If you do not want your child to participate using the glasses we have purchased (from Lunt Solar- ISO certified), please print out the letter and send it back with your child before Monday. They will have an alternate activity to do inside the building.”

Solar Eclipse Letter

If you do not want your child to participate, please email me in addition to filling out the form so I am sure to get it.

Click here for another useful link from NASA with info about the  eclipse

The upper grades are doing CMAS testing the next couple of weeks. First grade supports their testing schedule by switching specials times with them.  From Tuesday, April 9 – Wednesday, April 17 we will be going to specials in the morning from 9:55 – 10:40 on M,T, Th, and Fr and on Wednesdays from 10:30 – 11:10. This means we will not have a morning snack recess. We will instead have an afternoon snack recess from 1:40 – 2:00.

Here’s what’s happening next week:

Star of the Week: Sarah

Monday: Solar Eclipse – we’ll eat lunch in the classroom and have an inside lunch recess. We’ll go outside with our eclipse glasses somewhere between 12:10 and 1:00.  Specials is Art.

Tuesday: Art

Wednesday: Art

Thursday Music / Library checkout

Friday: Music

The next couple of months always fills up the calendar. I’ll do my best each week to keep you updated. Here are some things to add to your calendar.

Friday, April 19 – non student day

Monday, April 22 – non-student day

April 23 and 24 – End of year iReady testing in the A.M.

Friday, March 15, 2024

Dear Parents,

I hope you all stayed safe and warm and enjoyed the extra time together with our two snow days.

This will be just a quick update.

·       I will be mailing our “When I Grow Up” book to the publisher next week. If you would like to order a book, please either do so online or by check. Either way, send the order form back to me. You are not obligated to order, I just want to make sure everyone gets an opportunity to order before I mail our pages in!

·       Some of the kids expressed an interest in designing the cover for our book. We decided as a class that they would vote on the cover they want for our book. If a child expressed interest in designing the cover, I sent home a page for them to use. They know they must use marker (not crayon), include the title “When I Grow Up” and outlining the title and picture in black like they did with their picture will look nice. It must be returned on Monday.

·       In writing, we’re working on writing a book review of their favorite book. Some students are choosing books from our classroom library and others have a book from home they’d like to use. It would be helpful if they could bring their book to school on Monday.

Here’s what’s going on next week:

Star of the Week: Kai
Mon.-Fri: Scholastic Book Fair in the library
Mon: Art
Tues: Music
Wed: Music
Thurs: Music / No library checkout due to the Book Fair
Fri: PE

March 25 – 29 Spring Break
Week of April 1: Star of the week Riley W.

Enjoy your weekend and I look forward to seeing everyone on Monday!

Friday, March 1, 2024

Dear Parents,

I look forward to meeting with each of you next week at conferences to celebrate these amazing kids! They have grown so much this school year! I can't wait to share their progress with you!

Monday is our 120th day of school. First grade will have very fun, very TOP SECRET celebration! The kids know we'll do a "little" something, but they don't know that the room will be transformed into a Spy Lab and they will all be Secret Agents whose mission it is to rescue Zero the Hero from devious Agent 119 who has stolen Zero the Hero. Without Zero the Hero we cannot celebrate the 120th day of school! The day will be full of special missions, all focused on counting and solving math problems to 120.

Here's how you can help create excitement: In your child's folder today is a sealed white envelope with a  "Top Secret" label. You can have them open and read their top secret  mission note anytime this weekend. I've attached the letter to the email in case yours get lost or your child wasn't here today.  Feel free to allow them to dress as Secret Agents or a spy! We will have black lights so anything that will glow will be fun! Thank you to the volunteers who have offered to come in today after school to transform the room and to those who have volunteered to come run a station on Monday!

I'll keep this this parent letter short this week and look forward to meeting with you next week!

Next week:
Star of the Week: no one due to the short week
Monday: PE  Secret Agent Spy day!  Conferences after school
Tuesday: PE / conferences after school
Wednesday: PE / conferences after school
Thursday: non-student day / conferences  A.M.
Friday: No school

Remember that enrichment classes are cancelled next week due to conferences.

Enjoy your weekend!

Mrs. Hoeckelberg

Dear Parents,

Our Valentine's Day party last week was so much fun! Thanks to our wonderful room parents, Katie and Amanda, for coordinating and to all parents who donated and helped out. The kids had a really fun day! I've added some pictures to the Photo page!

This week in writing we are starting a really fun project called "When I Grow Up". First grade works with a publisher called Studentreasures Publishing to publish this book into a hardback or soft back book. Each student will have two pages in the book: a picture page and a page with their writing. I will have samples at conferences for you to look at.This book really is a keepsake! Tomorrow, Friday the 23rd, please take a look in your child's folder for an order form for this book. You do not have to order the book, but the company does require that I offer order forms to everyone. Please send the order form back whether you place an order or not. You can pay by check or use their online ordering. Either way, return the completed  form in the evelope to me by March 6. Thank you!

In math, we are focusing on geometry and the vocabulary that goes with both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes. At home, have fun finding and naming 3-dimensional shapes around your house!

We started unit 11 this week in SuperKids. Contractions are the focus. In reading groups, comprehension of fiction and non-fiction is the focus. As students begin reading more fluently and decoding words with more than one syllable, their comprehension improves. When reading at home, spend some time discussing the story, the characters, problem, solutions, any connections made to the text. With non-fiction talk about the main idea and the facts or details that support the main idea.

I sent home a Scholastic book order form. Click on the Scholastic link on this site to place an online order.

Click here to sign up for your parent teacher conference.

Click here to volunteer for our fun 120th Spy Day (shhh...top secret. Do not tell your child!)

Here's what's coming up next week:
Star of the week: Mikey

Dear Parents,

Just a reminder to have your child bring a lunch tomorrow for the field trip to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. We'll load the buses at about 9:15 and return to school at about 2:00. We will not be taking their backpacks. Only their lunch/water bottle and their coat.

Students may bring in their Valentine's box and Valentines on Wednesday (Feb. 14) in the morning. We will hand out Valentines first thing in the morning. The party will be in the afternoon from 1:45 - 2:30.

This week in writing we talked about the features of writing a How-To and practiced by writing directions on How to make a Valentine's Day card. Next week students will practice writing their own How-To by writing about somethiing they know how to do by themselves!

In math we will begin our study of geometery learning about both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes. Students will explore fractions with 2-D shapes. They will learn the vocabulary that goes along with defining the attributes of shapes. This is a fun unit that lends itself to lots of hands on experiences.

In Science we will begin a unit called Patterns in the Sky. Click on the Science link on this website to read more about it.

In Superkids students learned more ways for vowels to make their long sound. "Ay" together is a vowel team that makes the long sound of A. They also learned that when 'y' wants to be a vowel at the end of a short (one syllable) word it will say the long sound for i as in my, why, shy, cry. At the end of longer (two syllable) words the 'y' makes the long e sound as in happy, silly, baby. You may have noticed many words with these spelling patterns in the reading this week. Next week we will continue with Unit 10. You can look at the Literacy tab to see the memory words and pattern words we are focusing on reading and writing.

Here's what's happening next week:

Star of the Week: Benjamin

Monday: Music
Tuesday: PE
Wednesday: PE / Valentine's Day Party 1:45 - 2:30
Thursday: PE / library checkout
Friday: No school for students
Monday, Feb. 19 - No school

Have a great weekend!

Mrs. H.

Friday, February 2, 2024

Dear Parents,

We will be taking a field trip to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science on Friday, February 9. We will leave the school at about 9:15 and return around 2:00. Please plan on sending a sack lunch in with your child as we will be eating at the museum. Clearly label anything that is not to be thrown away. We will not be taking backpacks in - only lunches and their coats. I have 5 wonderful volunteers that will supervise groups of 5-6 students. Our first stop will be at the Planetarium for the Destination Solar System show. After that, groups will explore the museum. If you did not get a chance to sign up but would like to meet your child's group at the museum, you may do that. Let me know so I know who to expect. You will need to purchase admission to the museum and a ticket to the 10:30 show. We are looking forward to a fun day!

We celebrated the 100th day of school on Thursday. In first grade, our big day is the 120th day of school! I'll send home information soon on what's happening this day!

January 26, 2024

Dear Parents,

Today the kids finished up their personal narrative and spent some time editing their work. Next week they'll work on another story before we move on to informational writing.

In math, the penguins continue to be great for solving equations with missing numbers and story problems. We are learning that addition and subtraction are related and that we can use addition to help solve a subtraction problem! For extra math practice at home DreamBox continues to be a great resource. I let DreamBox know what unit we are on with our Bridges curriculum and it supports the standards we are working on!

This week in reading we have been focusing on contractions and compound words! When reading stories on SuperKids online, you'll notice lots of contractions and compound words. It's a good resource for reinforcing the skills we are working on in the classroom. We are currently on Unit 9.

Look back to last weeks letter for information on the upcoming Valentine's Day classroom party. Room parents will be reaching out soon.

We have a field trip coming up on Feb. 9. Students will need to bring a sack lunch. All lunches will go in a tub so be sure to clearly label your childs lunch and water bottle.

Here's what's happening next week:

January 19, 2024

Dear Parents,

Well, that was a fast week! And a cold one!

In my last letter I mentioned that we are half way through our SuperKids curriculum. Today we took our mid year assessment which included spelling and comprehension. In today's folder you will see the mid year spelling test and the mid year comprehension assessment. The reading assessment included both fiction and non-fiction text. The kids read it first by themselves then we read it together. They also planned and wrote another opinion piece: Would it be more fun to live in a zoo, a library or on a boat? Ask your child what their opinion and reasons were today! I'll use the rubric to score these and share them with you at conferences!

Our room moms are busy planning for our Valentine's Day party on Wednesday, January 14. Students may bring in a decorated box or bag to collect their Valentines in. Please send the box or bag in on the 14th (no earlier due to space restrictions in the classroom). Also, keep in mind that valentines come in all shapes and sizes so a small box typically does not hold 26 valentines very well.  As you begin to prepare for Valentine's Day, please note that we ask that you only have your child sign their name on their valentines. When you have 26 kids address 26 valentines with 26 valentines boxes, it becomes a very tricky and involved passing out process. If all you need to do is place one valentine in each box, it makes it a little easier on our end :)

Thank you to the 5 volunteers who signed up to come along with us on our field trip to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science on Friday,  Feb. 9. I'll reach out to you five soon with more information.  If you would like to meet us there and join your child's group you are welcome to do so. If you plan to attend the planetarium show with us, buy your tickets sooner rather than later as tickets are limited. It's helpful if I know who to expect so shoot me an email if you plan on doing this. Thanks!

In science, the kids had fun exploring shadows by making shadow puppets. Check out the Photo page on this website for some pictures!

Here's what's happening next week:

Star of the week: Ryan

Monday: Art / Mrs. H out in the afternoon

Thursday: Music, library check out.

Looking ahead:

Have a great weekend together!

January 15, 2024

Dear Parents,

My weekly parent letter is a little late, I apologize, I left a little under the weather on Friday. This letter comes as we all just received word of a snow day tomorrow! Stay warm and enjoy your extra time together!

Last week in math, we took a pretend trip to Antarctica to study two types of penguins: the Rock Hopper penguin and the King Penguin. Before the trip we prepared a measuring strip so that each student could measure themselves and the penguins. We used the measuring strips to compare heights, convert inches to feet and recorded these measurements along with other facts about these penguins. This week we will continue to explore penguins and use them as visual models for reviewing addition and subtraction strategies for facts to 20 and for solving story problems. We will review addition strategies such as combinations of 10, add 10, add 9, doubles and doubles +/- 1.

In writing we are talking about and writing opinions! An opinion is what we think and feel! Students are working on stating their opinion, giving reasons for their opinion and adding a conclusions. At home, provide topics for opinions such as favorite food, sport, vacation spot, color, pet, etc…. and give reasons. It’s fun to hear reasons for their opinions.

In reading, we are half way through our Super Kids curriculum. We’ll finish up unit 8 this week and take a mid-year assessment on Friday to see how they are doing on applying the spelling skills we’ve learned this year. Keep reading at home and using the Super Kids online program to read both fiction and non-fiction books that reinforce memory words and spelling patterns that we are working on.

In Science have started a unit called Shadow Town. Click on the Science tab and scroll down to Shadow Town to learn more about this unit and watch a short video introducing it!

Happy Winter Break!

If my thank you note did not make it into your hands or I somehow forgot to write one, thank you to everyone for the gifts, cards and gift cards. I so appreciate the love!

This week amongst all the holiday joy we took a math test on number lines and focused on counting by tens, up and back, both on and off decade. You will find the unit assessment in their blue folder. In January we will pick back up with measuring, learning about penguins, and doing more work with story problems!

In literacy we learned about mommy e” words + ing or ed. (Also known as “magic e” or “silent e”.)  When we add a suffix to a “mommy e” word, you drop the e and the ending (joke becomes joking or joked.

We finished up reading all of our grandparent letters. All letters have been returned to students to take home and read together with family. It’s been fun learning about the many family celebrations and traditions.

We finished up our Holidays Around the World this week. “Suitcases” with their travel log and crafts went home on Wednesday.

The last two days have been full of fun learning about reindeer and doing Grinchy activities. We also got to hang out with our 3rd grade buddies and make snowflakes!

I hope you all have a wonderful break and have fun spending time together as a family!

December 14, 2023

Dear Parents,

We are just about finished reading all of our Grandparent letters. They are so fun to read! I love watching  eyes light up when someone hears their grandparent's letter being read! I am sending them home with kids after they have been read and new traditions logged on our chart. I put a picture of our chart in the Photo Album page of this website.

In math we continue to use the number line to explore patterns, extend patterns and solve addition and subtraction equations. At home, have fun counting up and back by 1's 5's and 10's starting at various numbers between 1 and 100.

In writing we are writing facts learned from our travels "around the world" as we learn about winter holidays in China, Mexico, India and Israel. Students are also planning and writing about their favorite holiday traditions.

To keep reading momentum going, be sure to find time to enjoy some good books together over break.

This week we are working on finishing up our iReady mid-year assessments. The data from these assessments will help me as I plan for after winter break.

Next week is our last week before winter break and is traditionally a Wilder Spirit Week! See below for the theme for each day! First grade traditionally has a Reindeer day and a Grinch day. We'll do these next Thursday and Friday. You do not need to do anything for this.

December 1, 2023

Happy December!

In math this week we started working with number lines. We can use number lines to show our work and our friend, Tad the frog, helps us hop along as we find patterns. We have been not only adding and subtracting, but also finding missing numbers on the number line.

In literacy we learned that long vowels say their name like in words like 'we' and 'go'. When a vowel is at the end of a word or syllable, it is usually long and says its name. This is called an open syllable.  (o|pen and la|ter both have a vowel at the end of the first syllable so that vowel makes a long sound.). This rule helps us know when to read and write a long vs. short vowel! Next week we’ll learn that an ‘e’ at the end of a word such as ‘game’ and ‘ride’ is another way to make a vowel say its long sound. For this week’s memory words and pattern words, refer to the literacy page of this website. We are in Unit 6 this week and next week. Reading stories on Super Kids online is a great way to practice reading words with the pattern we are working on and the memory words we are working on.

In writing we continued to work on descriptive writing and got to create and describe a snowman. If you are in the building, be sure to check out our work in the hallway!

Next week we will start our Holidays Around the World unit by traveling to different countries! We have already started talking about different holiday traditions thanks to our grandparent letters that have been coming in! We can only read a few a day, but I told the kids that they will get all their letters to bring home at the end of December before break.

A few things to note:

-We will start iReady testing next week. December 4-6 we will be doing Reading and December 11-13 we will work on Math. Please be sure your student has a healthy breakfast in the morning so they are ready to go and can do their best with the assessment when they get to school! Additionally, if possible please try and schedule any appointments in the afternoon as testing will be done in the morning. We use this mid-year data to help us group kids, see their learning progress and to plan for instruction.

Nov. 9, 2023

Dear Parents,

Tonight, Thursday, November 9 is our evening Veteran's Day performance. The front doors to the school will unlock at 5:45. I will be in the classroom at 5:45 to meet your child and bring them to the gym.  When you arrive, take your child's coat  and send them down to the classroom.  (They will not be coming back to the classroom after the performance). Then head on into the gym to get your seat. When facing the stage, our class is on the far right side. The rehearsals have been going really well! Tomorrow morning, they will do the same performance for the school at 8:30.  Scroll down to last weeks letter for information from Mrs. Gonzaloes on what they should wear for the performance.

Next Friday, November 17 we will have our own Thanksgiving celebration in the classroom by making homemade applesauce and enjoying it together in the afternoon. Could you please send in 1 peeled and chopped up apple on Friday Morning?  We will drop them in the crockpot first thing in the morning! Thank you!

Our grandparent letters are written and we are working on getting the envelopes addressed. I will mail a letter for each address you sent me. My plan is to get them in the mail next week. If you haven't sent me an address, you can do so by clicking here and  filling out this form.  I'll mail two letters and if you have anyone else you'd like the letter to go to, there is a copy in your child's blue folder.

Here's what's happening next week:

Next week is Wilder's Scholastic Book Fair. We will visit the book fair on Monday so the kids can fill out a wish list.

Grandparent Letters and Holiday Traditions

December will be here before we know it and I am so excited to let you all know that we will be studying Holiday Cultures and Traditions around the World.

One piece that goes along with holiday traditions that we will be doing this year is writing to an older relative and asking them what they did growing up around this time of year (December)!  It is an incredible way to connect generations and for students to understand a tradition other than the one they currently know!  I would love to have this be a "Grandparent Letter", if possible, or a relative that is 1-2 generations older than your student.

I will mail out two letters. I’ll send you a copy of the letter if you’d like to send it out to additional family members!  Please fill out the Google Form below with the two grandparents' names and addresses. I will get these in the mail next week and am asking them to write back no later than December 1. The letters will come to school where we’ll read them, compare and contrast traditions, and use the map to locate where grandparents currently live or where they grew up.

If you do not feel that this is something you or your family can reasonably do at this time, please let me know and we will figure out an alternative.

Thank you so much for helping us out with our learning!

Click here for the Google Form to enter Grandparent names and addresses

Please fill out the form twice - once for each grandparents/address

November 2, 2023

Dear Parents,

What a fun Halloween party! Our room parents, Katie and Amanda, did a fantastic job planning a fun party complete with snacks for the class! Thank you Katie and Amanda and to all the volunteers who came and helped run the acivities or sent in materials/food for the party.  I have a few pictures on the 'Photo" page of the class and party!

Next week in writing we will start learning about how to write a letter. Our first letter will be a letter to grandparents asking them to tell us about their December traditions.  We ask the grandparents to write back and then we share the letters with the class.  The kids really enjoy hearing about the traditions their grandparents enjoyed when they were 6 and 7 years old and comparing them to the traditions they enjoy! Please fill out the Google Form with the name/s and addresses the Grandparent or older relative you'd like me to mail their letter to. You can send me one or two addresses and I'll mail up to two letters. I'm happy to send you a copy of the letter to mail out to additional relatives if you'd like. Thank you for helping make this a fun project for the kids!

Next week is the First grade Veteran's Day performance. The first performance will be on Thursday, November 9 from 6:00-7:00pm. Have your child come to the classroom at 5:45pm. Go get yourself a seat and I'll bring them down to the gym.
On Friday, November 10th, they will perform for the school at 8:30 am.

Here's what's coming up next week:

Star of the Week: Grace
Monday: Art
Tuesday: Art
Wednesday: Art
Thursday:Music / library checkout / Evening Veteran's Day perforance
Friday: Music / Veteran's Day performance for school at 8:30 am

This is a lot of information! Reach out if you have any questions.

Have a great weekend!

Mrs. H.

Here is  a note from music teacher Mrs. Gonzales about the performance.

Dear Parents:

The first grade students will be performing two Veterans Day shows. The first show will be on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023 and the second will be on Friday, Nov. 11, 2022.  These two programs are important as we take time to honor those who have served or are currently serving in the Armed Forces.

Show Details:

Date: Nov. 9 at 6:00 PM  - this show is for all of the first grade family, friends, and Veterans.

Date: Nov. 10 at 8:30 AM - this will be an assembly for the Wilder student body, 1st grade families with Veterans attending, as well as guest Veterans.

Dress: Please have your child wear red, white and/or blue to both performances.

The November 9 show at 6:00 PM will be for parents, family, and friends to attend.  Please have your 1st grade child arrive by 5:45 PM that evening to line up and get ready in their classrooms.

We will be honoring the Veterans with a roll call. If you or a family member has served in the Armed Forces, please email the following information and a picture of your Veteran to wilderveterans@gmail.com by October 18 so that we can honor their service through a slide show presentation.

October 19, 2023

Dear Parents,

It turned chilly today! It's a good idea to have your child bring a coat or even a sweatshirt to keep in their backpack for days like this. They will go outside to play unless the temperature drops below 20 degrees or it's too wet.

On Tuesday, Oct. 31, we will have our Halloween parade and party at 1:15. If you are coming to see the parade, you can stand in the grass outside of our classroom or anywhere around the school. The parade starts at 1:15 with the Kindergarten class and it will move around the school with each class joining as it passes. We will join the parade, walk around the school and return to the classroom where our room parents will be waiting for us! The Halloween party will go until the end of the day. Parents are welcome to come for the parade and party. Please remember that cosutumes must be non-violent and have no pretend weapons. Students should bring their costume to school and we will change into costumes just before the parade.

First grade has been working hard with music teacher Mrs. Gonzales on our Veterans Day Assembly. There will be an evening performance for families on Thursday, November 9 at 6:00 pm and a day time performance for the school on Friday, November 10 at 8:30 am. You will be receiving more information from Mrs. Gonzales. You can also email her with questions.
agonzales@lps.k12.co.us

Tomorrow is picture retakes. Email me if I should send your child down to have their picture retaken.

Writing: We have come back to personal narratives. At conferences I shared with you their first personal narrative. They are doing a great job adding more and more details and sequencing the events in their story. We also are really focusing on putting punctuation at the end of sentences and starting each sentence with a capital letter.

Math: Equations to 20, story problems where they are solving for a missing addend or a missing sum. We are learning math games that require doubling a number then adding or subtracting one from that number.

Science: We'll explore animal sounds by learing about how sounds are made.

Social Studies: We will be reading and discussing short reading passages that focus on our Country and its symbols. Watch for these reading passages to come home. These will be fun to read and talk about together.

Reading/spelling: This week we learned about 'er' and the sound it makes in a word. We also learned about the ending 'ed' and how it makes the sound /ed/ /d/ or /t/ at the end of the word. Ask your child to tell you the 'secret story' of 'er and 'ed'.

Here's what's coming up next week:

Star of the Week: Augie

Monday: PE / Mrs. H out in the afternoon
Tuesday: Halloween parade and party starting at 1:15
Wednesday: PE
Thursday: Smart Lab / Library Checkout
Friday: SmartLab

Tomorrow morning our class has been asked to sing the Friday Song on the morning announcements. We will head up to the office right at 7:50 !

Have a good weekend together!

Mrs. H.

October 13, 2023

Dear Parents,

Happy Friday the 13th! I hope you all had a great day!

Last Friday’s Fun Run was fun! The kids all did their personal best and all finished the race! Check out the Photos page on this web site for pictures of a few of our really fast runners that placed in the top 5. I was proud of all the kids for doing their best!

This week we finished up Unit 2 in math. I will go over the Unit 2 assessment with you at conferences next week. Next week we will start Unit 3 where we will now be focusing on addition and subtraction strategies within 20. We’ll continue to practice solving story problems and exploring different ways to show their thinking using pictures, words and numbers. We will also continue to learn about place value.

In Super Kids our spelling focus has been words that end with “_ng” such as -ing, -ung, -ang, -ong. Click on the Literacy link on this website for memory words that students are learning to read and spell. A fun, tactile way to practice spelling our pattern words and memory words while you’re making dinner is to pour a little layer of salt in a cookie sheet and then ask your child to use their finger to spell the words in the salt. A little wiggle of the cookie sheet clears it for the next word.  The brain really likes the bumpy feeling on the finger as they spell!

This week in writing we’ve been talking about and writing our opinions. They are learning that opinions are not right or wrong and that when giving their opinion, following it up with a reason or two helps others understand the reason for their opinion.

In science we created Venn diagrams together and with a partner to compare and contrast adult animals and their young.

Next week is parent teacher conferences. I look forward to meeting with everyone. Please come on in the room at your assigned conference time to keep us on schedule.  If you are not able to sign up for a conference, I will send home papers and my notes in an envelope the following week.

Here’s what’s happening next week:

Star of the week: none due to a short week

Monday – Art, conferences after school
Tuesday – Art, conferences after school
Wednesday –Art, conferences after school

Thursday-  Non student day / conferences during the day
Friday – No school

Looking ahead: Non-student day Monday, October 23
Tuesday, Oct. 31 – Halloween Parade and classroom party. Details to come from the room parents.

If you are not getting emails from the room parents, make sure you have signed up for Wilder’s Membership Tool Kit

I won’t be sending a parent letter next week. Enjoy your long weekend together!

Mrs. H

October 5, 2023

Dear Parents,

Tomorrow is Wilder’s annual Fun Run! We will run during our specials time from 1:05 – 1:50. Parents are welcome to join us! You can meet us out front at 1:05. I’ve attached a note from Mr. Mac at the bottome of this letter  with more information below.

If you haven’t signed up for a conference time yet, please click here to available dates and times.

Totally Terrific Teacher tickets went home earlier this week. This is a fund raising activity done by the teachers each year. Teachers from each grade level choose a fun activity to do with a small group of students. Students may purchase ‘chances’ to win that activity by filling out a ticket. Each ticket costs $1.00. If you would like to have your child purchase tickets for a chance to win a fun activity, please fill out the tickets and return in an envelope that includes the tickets and money. Next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday students will put their tickets in a tub for the teacher activity they’d like to win! Winners will be announced the following week!

This week in writing we are finishing up our non-fiction writing about elephants. Next week we’ll start learning about opinion writing!

In math we continue to practice strategies for adding and subtracting with fluency and accuracy.

In literacy our new sound for spelling and writing was ‘th’. Sounds we are reviewing are all of our short vowels and ch, sh, and wh. Look in your child’s blue folder for a memory game using our new memory words: where, what, who, which what, why. These can be tricky so playing a game with them is helpful for learning to read and spell them.

The students have been working hard in music to learn their songs for our upcoming First Grade Performance. If your child has a speaking part, their lines were sent home on Tuesday in their Blue folder. If you are unsure if your child has a speaking part, ask them or email Mrs. Gonzales at agonzales@lps.k12.co.us

Dear Parents,

I hope you are enjoying this beautiful fall weekend with your family!

Yesterday I sent out a Sign Up Genius for our Parent Teacher conferences. If you haven't signed up for a time to meet on conference week, click here to schedule a time. I will be meeting with parents on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening. You'll notice Tuesday has later times offered to accomodate those who need a later time. There are also times offered on Thursday morning. Thank you for understanding that I am unable to meet outside of this week. See below for a letter from Linda Jones, Director or Elementary Ed., regarding conferences.

Our field trip to the Denver Zoo was so much fun! Thank you to the parents who volunteered to chaperone small groups of students and to other parents who came along. Keeping the groups small helped ensure all kids were safe and able to move around the zoo to see the animals they wanted to see!  Check out the Photo Album link on the site for some fun pictures of the day!

In writing we have finished up our personal narratives. Next week we'll start learning how to write informative text. With all of our work on learning about animals and how they use their body parts to survive and defend themselves, we will have lots of information to write about!

In science, we will be learning about animals and their young.

In math we are focusing on strategies that help add and subtract numbers quickly and accurately with in 10.

In literacy we continue to practice reading fluency with the super short stories that come home each Monday. Hang on to these and have your child read and re-read each week to work on reading fluently and with expression! SuperKids online is a great resource for other decodable text right at their level. Click on the Literacy tab to see the pattern words and memory words we are working on each week. Next week we will finish up Unit 2.

Parent-Teacher Conferences - A message from Linda Jones, Director of Elementary Education

Dear LPS Parents and Guardians:

Littleton Public Schools is looking forward to our fall parent-teacher conferences. These conferences provide an important opportunity for us to share and discuss your child’s academic and social-emotional progress. We greatly appreciate you taking the time to meet with school staff and share information about your child. Your insight and perspective are essential as we partner to support your child.

At the elementary level, October 19 is a non-student day to provide time for school staff to meet with parents and guardians. Additionally, conferences are scheduled at other times during the week of October 16-October 19. Conferences are not available on Friday, October 20 as this is a compensation day for the additional hours school staff work to support parent-teacher conferences. We appreciate your understanding that conferences outside of this week may not be possible. Educators have many responsibilities before, during, and after the school day and are not required to conference outside of our scheduled conference times.

At the secondary level, schools have started their parent-teacher conferences in a variety of formats and structures that most fit the needs of their school communities. Some conferences are held in person, while others are virtual conferences to accommodate family schedules.

With that being said, not all secondary schools will be hosting parent-teacher conferences on October 19, since many schools have hosted conferences prior to that date. This date is a non-student day. Your student’s school will communicate their conference schedules to help families plan accordingly. Like the elementary level, conferences are not available on Friday, October 20 as this is a compensation day for the additional hours school staff work to support parent-teacher conferences.

We look forward to seeing you during our fall conferences.

Sincerely,

 Linda Jones
Director of Elementary Education

 Clay Abla
Director of Secondary Education

Dear Parents,

Tomorrow is picture day as Wilder. First graders will have their picture taken between 8:45 and 9:15.

On Monday we will take our first field trip to the Denver Zoo to enrich our science unit called Animal Reporters! I have 4 parent volunteers coming along to supervise groups. I need one more official volunteer. Please consider signing up to supervise a small group of students. Click here to sign up on the Sign Up Genius Form.

If any other parents would like to come and join a group, you are welcome to meet us there. Please let me know if you plan on coming along. Students will need a sack lunch, a water bottle and a snack. If you would like the cafeteria to make a lunch for your child, please let me know today or tomorrow so I can let them know. The kids will be bringing their backpack to carry their lunch, a jacket, a hat if they need one, and their water bottle. Please have your child dress for the weather and wear comfy shoes as there will be a lot of walking. We will leave the school at about 9:15 and return around 1:45.

Next week, after school enrichment classes begin. If you have your child signed up for an after school enrichment class, it's really helpful if I know what class they are going to and on what day. Send me an email to let me know. Thank you!

The kids filled the class reward jar this week so as a reward tomorrow will be "bring a stuffed animal to school" day! Stuffies must be able to fit in a backpack and must be well behaved! I'm proud of them for working together to earn another class reward!

Dear Parents,

This week we finished up our iReady assessments. The kids did a great job on this and did their best! I'm proud of them! I can go over these assessments with you at conferences next month!

In writing we've been learning how to write a personal narrative. A personal narrative is a true story, about them, that is memorable! The kids enjoy telling their stories!

In literacy, we have been working on the /ch/ sound in both reading and writing. You can always check the literacy tab to see the spelling pattern we are working on as well as the memory words.

I will be sending you directions for accessing SuperKids online  tomorrow. Watch for a QR code that will easily get your child onto their account! This is a great resource for reading books that are decodable and right at their level and for playing word games that focus on the spelling pattern we are learning!  I'll send it in Friday's folder.

In science we are now learning about the different types of animal skin coverings and how it helps the animal survive in their habitat!

In math we are focusing on knowing our addition facts to 10 with fluency! DreamBox is a great resource for working on math at home! Let me know if you need your child's log on information again. I can easily send it to you again.

On Thursday, Sept, 21, our class will enjoy a Lunch Bunch lunch with Mrs. Reinert!  She will meet our class in the classroom to eat lunch together. Kids may buy a lunch or bring a lunch!

Picture Day is on Friday, Sept. 22. We usually have our picture taken in the morning.

Thank you to the 5 parents who volunteered to come along with us to the Zoo on Monday, Sept. 25. I will be reaching out to you soon with more information. If you'd like to come along and meet your child's group there that is not a problem! You'll  only need to pay admission. Let me know if you're coming so I can let the group leader know.

Here's what's comng up next week:

Star of the Week: Jack
Monday - Music
Tuesday - PE / Mrs. H out for meeting in the PM
Wednesday - PE
Thursday - PE / Library checkout / Lunch Bunch with the principal
Friday- Smart Lab

Looking Ahead:

Friday, Sept. 22 – Picture Day

Dear Parents,

Tonight from 5:00 - 7:00 is Wilder's School Carnival! This is fun event is a great way to connect with other Wilder families and celebrate the begining to a great school year! I hope to see you there!

This week in math we are focusing on recognizing a set of dots on our number rack or ten frame with out counting each dot (subitizing). We are also using our white boards and number racks to solve story problems. In some story problems we are solving for the sum. In others, we are solving for a missing addend! Students are learning to show their work with pictures and an addition or subtraction math equation. We are also learning about pennies and nickels. At home, give your child a handful of pennies and nickels for them to sort and count!

Another resource for math is the online math program DreamBox. I mentioned this to you at Back to School Night. It's an adaptive math program which means it will adjust the math problems as needed. If your child is missing many of the math problems, it will adjust to support their learning. Same is true if they are doing really well - It will give more challenging work. It's a great math program that is best when used at least  3 times a week. We will get on Dream box a couple times each week so using it at home a couple nights each week will be beneficial.  I sent home in Wednesday's folder a letter with directions for getting on to Dreambox with your child’s log on info. Let me know if you need me to resend this letter to you.

Next week we will start Unit 1 in our Super Kids curriculum. Remember that you can click on the "Literacy" tab on this website to see what pattern words and memory words we are learning for each unit.

In writing, we will start our unit on Personal Narratives. Students will write about something they did or something that has happened to them. These are fun stories! Over the weekend, brainstorm with your child some ideas for their personal narrative stories!

In Science we have started our unit on Animal Reporters. The question we are exploring in this unit is: What are animal body parts and how do they use those body parts?

Click on the Scholastic Book Order link on the website to order Scholastic Books! Ordering online is easy and you will have access to all of the different grade level Scholastic book catalogs. Books will be delivered to the classroom.

We will take our first field trip to the Denver Zoo on Monday, Sept. 25. I can take 5 volunteers to supervise a group of 5-6 students. If you would like to come along as a volunteer click here.  If the sign up is full and you'd like to come, please join us by meeting us there and joining your child's group. You will need to pay admission to the zoo.

A Message from our new Media Center Coordinator Mrs. Maxwell

Hello Wilder Families!  Book checkouts will begin the week of August 28th.  We are so excited to do everything we can to support your young reader!

To help with these efforts, we have updated our circulation policy.  Every student at Wilder is starting this year with no overdue books--a clean slate!  However, our library is still missing a lot of books.  So if you could take the time to look around your house and return any CLC books, we would appreciate that greatly!

Going forward, we are limiting the total number of books checked out at one time to 4 per student.  If a student has more than 4 books checked out, they will need to return one before they check out another.

Having fewer books out at a time will help us provide more materials for everyone.  We never want to do anything that would discourage a child from reading or having access to books.  So if you have a late library book that you can't find, just let us know and we'll remove it from your child's account.

Thank you so much for everything you do to support the Creative Learning Center at Wilder.  We have amazing resources and awesome readers and that is all because of you!  We are so excited to begin circulation and get books in kids' hands!

Dear Parents,

I want to thank you all for coming to  Back To School Night. It was so nice seeing everyone! If you weren’t able to come you can find the slide show on my class website and your child should have brought home their Star of the Week Poster and other paperwork. Please reach out to me if you have any questions about anything!

Next week will be our last week of review with our Super Kids curriculum. I will send home their SK review workbook next Friday. Look through it with your child and if they were absent and have any unfinished pages, you can do them at home!

In writing we have been practicing writing sentences with some our new or review spelling words. We have been learning that all sentences have a noun (the who or what) and a verb (the action word). We’ve also been reviewing end punctuation. At home have your child practice writing simple sentences that have an upper case letter at the beginning and punctuation at the end. Look for a white envelope in your child’s blue folder. We played a memory game today with their new words today. Have fun playing this game at home!

In math we continue to count up and back by 1’s 2’s 5’s and 10’s. We are using a number rack to count and solve story problems.

In social studies we have been focusing on the power of YET and how our brain learns. This week we’ve talked about how doing challenging things helps our brain get stronger!

We have also been getting on our Chromebooks getting comfortable with navigating to prepare for our iReady assessments beginning next week. I still have a couple of kiddos without headphones. Ask your child this weekend if they had headphones today.

In your child’s blue folder you should have received an order form for a Fun Run tshirt. The order forms are due back to school on Sept. 8.

Also coming home is the blue folder is a September reading log to keep at home. As we talked about at BTS Night, students will benefit from reading at least 20 minutes a day. Let me know if you need resources for this. Super Kids online will be coming soon!

Thursday was our first day going to the library. Help your child remember to return their checked out books so they can check out more on Thursday!

Here's what’s coming up next week:
Monday  - No School
Tuesday – PE / iReady Reading /
Wednesday – Smart Lab /  PLC late start / iReady Reading
Thursday-Smart Lab / Lib. Checkout
Friday – Smart Lab / Wilder Fall Festival 5:00 – 7:00

Looking Ahead: We will have our first field trip to the Denver Zoo on Monday, September 25. I will be sending out a Sign Up Genius for volunteers in the next couple of weeks.

Have a really nice long weekend together! I look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday!

Mrs. Hoeckelberg

August 24, 2023

Dear Parents,

Back to School Night is on Tuesday, August 29 from 5:15 – 6:00. This is an evening for parents only. When you arrive at the school, head on down to the classroom and find your child’s table. I look forward to seeing everyone!

We have had a great week! I feel like the kids are really starting to settle in. They learned a lot in kindergarten and it’s showing! We continue to learn more daily routines and have established classroom expectations. Each day they build a little more stamina in making it through the day! A couple of things that are really helping is our morning snack time. Kids are pretty hungry by the time we go to morning recess at 10:00. Having a hearty snack keeps them going until lunch at 11:30. Also, having a water bottle in the classroom is really helpful in keeping them hydrated on these hot days.

In a couple of weeks first grade will be doing our beginning of year iReady assessment. This is an online assessment that we give to students at the beginning, middle and end of the school year. Each student has their own Chromebook in the classroom. If you haven’t already done so, please send in a pair of headphones for your child to use at school. We use Chromebooks frequently so they will need their own headphones. Thank you!

A note from the PTO:

Families, please sign up for the cakewalk for the fall festival!  We hope to see everyone there. Thank you, PTO.

August 18, 2023

Dear Parents,

What a fun first week of school! The kids did great learning about their new classroom, getting to know each other and learning new routines and procedures! They did so great that we celebrated with a little bit of free time at the end of the day today! They enjoyed choosing an activity to do!

Next week we'll start the review lessons in Super Kids to review letter sounds, capital and lower case letter formation. We'll also review types of sentences and the punctuation that goes with each one. To work on comprehension, there are some fun stories that we'll read as well!

In math we will get students familiar with routines and manipulatives. We'll focus on counting forward and backward by 1's, 2's and 5's.

Just a reminder that students may bring a snack to eat during morning recess. The kids are pretty hungry by this time and a snack helps them make it until lunch at 11:30. Also, having a water bottle in the classroom is helpful on these hot days.

Here's what happening next week:

Specials:

Monday: Smart Lab

Tuesday: All classes will go to Gym for a PBIS lesson

Wednesday: Art

Thursday: Art

Friday: Art

We'll start library checkout the week of August 28. Our checkout day will be Thursdays.

Thank you for helping your child remember to bring their Back and Forth folder to school each day. Check it in the evenings for any papers that are in it. If your child orders lunch, ask them how they are doing with memorizing their lunch number. Many know it and some are really close to knowing their whole number!

Have a great weekend together! I look forward to seeing all the kids on Monday!

Mrs. Hoeckelberg
