Dear Parents,
It's finally starting to feel like spring! It's hard to believe that we are so close to the end of the school year. I'll try and keep you informed of all the things happening in the classroom and at school for these last 29 days!!??
In math we took our third and final Benchmark assessment. This is the district assessment I shared with you at conferences. It's a cumulative assessment to see how well the kids are retaining standards that were taught in previous units. I am very happy to report that they all did very well on this! We've started unit 11 this week. Our focus is subtraction within 100.
Over the final weeks of the school year, our math instruction will be supported by Hannah Dorge, our math specialist. She will be working with small, rotating groups of students to provide targeted support. These groups may change from day to day based on student needs, allowing us to be responsive and provide the best possible support for each child. Please know that the activities and work in the small group is all based on grade level work and grounded in first grade standards. We’re excited to offer this additional opportunity to strengthen students’ math skills as we wrap up the year!
In writing our focus is on writing different kinds of poetry. It's a fun writing unit that allows kids to be creative with their words and topics. I am having kids write their poems in a special notebook so they will have a collection of all of their poems!
This week in reading we are focusing on the /oi/ and /oy/ sounds.
An end of year 1st grade tradition is to walk over to the park in the Burning Tree neighborhood for our end of year picnic! Each year, we ask for a family who lives in the neighborhood to "sponsor" us. We need one family to contact the appropriate person to obtain permission for us to use the park and to get the key or code to the pool area so that kids can use the bathroom if necessary. If you or anyone you know lives in the neighborhood and can help with this, please reach out to me. Thank you!
Here's what's happening next week.

Dear Parents,
Next week we will be helping our fourth-grade friends as they take their CMAS test by switching our Specials time with them. From April 6-14 first grade will go to specials in the morning at 9:55 and at 10:30 on Wednesdays. This means we will not have morning recess, but rather an afternoon recess (1:20 – 1:40). During this time kids may bring in two snacks each day - one snack will be eaten in the classroom during the morning at some point and the other they can eat during their afternoon recess.
Today we took the Unit 10 assessment. Next week we will start Unit 11 which will focus on subtraction within 100.
In writing, the kids are working on finishing up a nonfiction story. The students were encouraged to be creative with their characters, use really awesome adjectives, tell their story across pages and include a problem and solution for their character. They are super fun to read! I’ll send them home once I’ve taken a look at them all!
Next week we’ll focus on writing poetry.
Next week we’ll start unit 14 in our Super Kids curriculum. The memory words we are focusing on will be: kind, buy, find, right, wash, light.
The pattern we’ll be focusing on will be /oi/ and /oy/. The Super Short reading passage that comes home on Mondays will have lots of words with these two spelling patterns. Reading and re-reading at home helps readers improve fluency and comprehension.

Dear Parents,
Our When I Grow Up book is off to the publisher! I dropped it off at UPS on Tuesdy and just received an email from Studentreasures letting me know they received it today! Yay! We should receive our book in about 3 weeks! Thank you for your support on this fun project!
In math we are working on story problems that compare and ask how many more and how many fewer. A big part of this is really understanding what the story problem is asking. We read the story problem three times, each time underlining important numbers and words. The question is also underlined as it tells what we are solving for. In today's blue folder you will find the practice pages for unit 10.
In literacy we are currently in Unit 13. Our focus sounds for this week are /or/ and /ar/. Our memory words are: laugh, does, know, cold, both, again. There is a memory word game coming home in their folder today.
In science we are finishing up our study of maps and globes. We've compared and contrasted the difference between a map and a globe, learned about the compass rose, cardinal and intermediate directions. Located all seven continents and the oceans. If you are traveling over spring break, try and find a map for your child to use!
This week in writing, we have been writing to answer short prompts. The focus has been to use many adjectives and verbs, use correct spelling of words and spelling patterns that have been taught and correct sentence structure (capitals and end punctuation)
The kids have worked hard this week to earn enough PAWS tickets for a special day tomorrow! They've decided they'd like to have a stuffy day along with a movie at the end of the day. They are also welcome to bring an extra snack to enjoy during the movie. I have a few other fun (and educational) :) activities that we will do tomorrow as well.
Here's what's happening when we return from Spring Break.

Dear Parents,
Our When I Grow Up book is finished for the most part. The kids have planned, written a first draft, edited and revised it, wrote a final draft and drew a full page picture to go with it. It's been a lot of work, but so much fun watching the project come together. I'd like to drop it in the mail to the publisher, Studentreasures, next Tuesday (March 17). All we need now is the cover for the book.
The kids have decided that they'd like to have the chance to design the cover. If your child expressed an interest indoing this, I have sent home a letter to you explaining this and the paper they should use to create the cover. I explained to the kids that their book cover design must be returned to school on Monday, March 16. The class will vote for the picture they'd like on the front and all of the rest will be published at the back of the book for everyone to see. We will decide on Monday which picture will be the cover of the book. Ordering a book is completely optional. If would like to order online go to studentreasures.com/preorder The class code is 36705960. All orders must be in by Monday. I make copies of all of the work before sending it to the publisher so you can see and enjoy their work if you choose not to order.
We finished up Unit 9 in math and took the unit test today. Unit 9 was all about 2-digit addition with and without regrouping. I'll get these scored and sent home next week. Next week we'll start Unit 10 which takes us back to story problems, both addition and subtraction, where "how many more" and "how many fewer" questions are asked. At home over the weekend, try throwing in this type of language as you play together. How many more _____ do you have? How many fewer____ does she have? An important part of this unit is understanding the vocabulary. A story problem in this unit will sound like this: "Jay sees 18 bugs. Alex sees 12 bugs. How many fewer bugs does Alex see than Jay?"
In writing we had fun with descriptive writing using "awesome adjectives" and "vivid verbs"! Our next unit of narrative writing will include these types of words to make our writing even better!
Next week is our last week before Spring Break. It is also Book Fair week. See next week's Restaurant week information below this letter.

Dear Parents,
Last weeks Valentines Day party was a huge success. Thank you to everyone who helped make it a fun day for the kids and especially to our room moms for planning all the snacks and activities! I've added some pictures to the Photo Album page of this web site.
Next Friday will be a "best day ever" day for first graders! It is our celebration of the 120th day of school. It's a full day of spy activities looking for Zero the Hero. Without Zero we can't have the 120th day! I don't tell the kids about it so they are surprised when they arrive at school! There are six stations that students rotate through. Each one focused on a different activity. The room is set up to look like a spy lab with black lights and fun decorations. I do need volunteers to help set up the classroom and 6 volunteers to help run stations. We'll set the room up after school on Thursday, Feb. 26 and Spy Day will be the next day, Friday, Feb. 27. If you've been wanting to volunteer in the classroom this is a really fun time to come in. If you're limited on time and want to tag team the day with another person, that would be fine. Click here if you'd like to come help out! Thanks!
In math, we started unit 9 which focuses on addition to 100, learning how to add 1 and 2 digit numbers, using different strategies. Today we worked on adding 10 to numbers within 100.
In writing, we are starting our classbook called When I Grow Up book. For this book we use a publisher called Studentreasures to publish the book into a hard back or soft back book. Each student will get two full pages in the book. Right now the kids are planning their page in the book with a graphic organizer. Next, we'll write what we'll call a sloppy copy. This one will be edited and revised. Then they'll be ready for a final copy. This is the page that will be published in the book along with a full page picture. It's a really nice book when it's all done. I'll share books from previous years with you at conferences. If you would like to purchase a copy of the book, watch for an order form to come home in today's blue folder.
In reading we are focusing on reading and writing contractions. On Friday, we'll have a little fun with contractions by having Contraction Surgery! Students will perform "surgery" on words by cutting and pasting them into contractions. I'll post pics of this for you!
In Social Studies we have been learning about our first president, George Washington. Tomorrow we'll learn about Abraham Lincoln.
The students and I agreed that tomorrow would be a great day for a PJ day. Those who don't like to wear PJ's can call it a comfy/cozy day!

Dear Parents,
Tomorrow afternoon from 1:45 – 2:30 is our class Valentines Day party. Students can bring in a box or bag and their Valentine’s tomorrow morning. We need a few more volunteers to help with the party. If you are able to stop by and help out we’d love to have your help!
Friday is a non-student day. I will send out the Spring Parent Teacher conference sign up at 12:00.
On February 27, first grade will celebrate the 120th day of school with a fun Spy Day. SHHHH…. This is top secret. The kids don’t know until they get here on Friday. It’s a full day of activities centered around finding Zero the Hero. Without Zero we can’t have the 120th day! If you’d like to be a part of this fun day, please sign up to help run one of six stations in the classroom OR come in on Thursday the 26th after school to help transform the classroom into a spy lab! Please click here to sign up to help set up the classroom or to be a secret agent on Friday! Thank you!

Dear Parents,
Yesterday's field trip was so much fun for the kids! We finished up our science unit called "Patterns in the sky" with a fantastic Planetarium show called Destination Solar System. Thank you to all the parents who came to ensure a safe and fun field trip. I have added some pictures to the Photo Album page on this website. If there are any more pictures to add, please email them to me and I'll add them! Thanks!
Next Thursday, Feb. 12 is our Valentines day party. Students are welcome to bring in Valentines for their classmates. It's so much easier to pass them out if each Valentine only has who it is from. Students may also bring in a box or a bag to collect their Valentine's in. Due to space restrictions in the classroom, please bring them in on Thursday.
Friday, February 13 is a non-student day. I will be sending out a Sign Up Genius form at 12:00 for you to sign up for Parent Teacher conferences. Conferences will be March 2-5. If your student sees a literacy or math specialist, you'll want to try and grab a Tuesday time slot as that is the evening they will be available.

Dear Parents,
Next week, Thursday, Feb. 5, we will take a field trip to the Mueseum of Nature and Science. I have five volunteers signed up to chaperone students as we attend a show at the Planetarium and explore the museum after. Students will need to bring a sack lunch, water and a snack as we will load busses around 8:45 and return to school at about 2:00.
In math we continue to focus on subtraction story problems. Next week I'll send home some practice pages for this.
Next week in literacy we will practice reading and writing words that end with the letter y and the two sounds that y makes at the end of a word: long i and long e (cry, shy why and happy, jelly, funny). Click on the literacy tab to see our new memory words and pattern words.
In writing we will focus on non-ficiton writing that includes "how-to".

Dear Parents,
On Thursday, February 12 we will have our Valentine's Day party. The party will be held in the afternoon. Our wonderful room moms are already busy planning another fun and memorable party for the kids. Students are welcome to bring in a bag, box or decorate a Valentine's Box at home to bring in. Due to space restraints, please have your student bring their box in on the 12th. If you'd like your child to hand out valentines to their classmates, please have them write only who the valentine is from to make the passing out of valentines easier for the kids.
This week in math we have been reviewing many of the standards we've learned up to this point in first grade. You probably noticed a math workbook coming in in backpacks last week. That was from the first semester. Feel free to go through the workbook and do any pages that we didn't get to or your that your child may have missed when absent. They have a new workbook we are working on now that will come home at the end of the year.
In literacy we are focusing on contractions. Click on the Literacy link on this website for the contractions and memory words we are working on. SuperKids online is a great resource for kids to find books and stories that only have sounds and spelling patterns learned.
In writing, we are finishing up a personal narrative. We continue to plan a story that has a good beginning, middle and end. Of course, writing sentences that start with a capital letter and end with punctuation continues to be a focus. With this round of personal narratives, we are thinking about adding lots of details and fun words (similies) to really paint a picture in the readers mind!
In science, we explored the question: Where is the sun in the sky during different parts of the day? We conducted an experiment on the blacktop out side by tracing a shadow at different times to see how it moved. We've learned that the sun only seems to move across the sky as the Earth spins. Check their blue folder tonight for a picture they drew and have them explain it to you!
Next science question is: How does the amount of sunlight vary between seasons? We'll take a field trip to DMNS on Thursday, Feb. 5 to enrich our studies!
Tomorrow, Wilder students are encouraged to wear their Bronco gear to cheer on the Broncos if they would like to.

Dear Parents,
This week in math we continue to work on solving addition story problems with unknown addends or an unknown sum. We'll take the unit 7 test next week. Today coming home in the blue folder are pages from their practice workbook. In class we've been working to really understand what the story problem is asking by reading the problem three times.
First read: What is the unknown?
Second read: What do we know?
Third read: How will we solve it?
I encourage students to begin writing an equation as I read it to them using a line or a box for the unknown. Example:
Bo made 6 touchdowns. Then, he made some more. By the end of the game, he had made 10 touchdowns. How many more touchdowns did Bo make? The equation would look like this 6 + _____ = 10. The word "some" indicates the unknown. Students are encouraged to solve by using a number line, counting up, drawing a picture or number bond.
Story problems that have been trickier include the sum first. For example: Sue had 17 crayons. 9 were in her crayon bag. The rest were on the table. 17= 9 + _____.
By reading the problem three times to identify 1)what the unknown number is 2) what do we know and 3)how will we solve it, has been helpful. At home, spend some time with real world problems for them to solve.
Next Unit in math focuses on subtraction story problems.
In writing we wrote a second opinion piece of their choice. Take a look in their blue folder tonight and ask your child to read their writing to you! I enjoy reading their opinions!
In science, we continue to learn about patterns with the sun, moon and earth. To enrich our learing, we will be taking a field trip to the Museum of Nature and Science to see a show at the planetarium. The field trip will be on Thursday, February 5. Looks like we have five volunteers signed up to come along with us. Thank you!
Today and tomorrow we will learn more about Martin Luther King, Jr.
Here's what's happening next week:
Star of the Week: None due to the short week

Dear Parents,
It was such a nice week back together! The kids came with so many stories to share all about their Winter Break! I'm excited for this second semester as the kids transition from beginning first graders to almost second graders! It's so exciting to watch their growth!
In math we started Unit 7. In this unit students will be learning to write equations to solve addition story problems. They will be solving story problems with an unknown sum as well as story problems with unknown addends. The kids are learning ways to understand what exactly the story problem asking for and to write an equation to match. At home, turn everyday situations into story problems for them to solve to give this real world meaning!
In reading we are focusing on vowel teams such as: oa, ai, ee, ea, ui, ue. This is another way for a vowel to make it's long sound (most of the time! )You'll notice the Super Short coming home has many words with vowel teams. Click on the Literacy link on this website for a list of the memory words we are focusing on.
I meet with students periodically to assess their ability to read fluently, without decoding each word. When students begin reading fluently, their comprehension improves! One way to improve fluency is to re-read familiar, decodable text. The Super Shorts I send home are familiar and decodable. Another good resource is SuperKids online. There are lots and lots of books and stories that only use the spelling patterns that have been taught which makes each story accessilbe to every student! I'm always happy to provide additional resources such as books and/or reading passages for your child to read at home. Please reach out if you would like anything!
In writing, we are re-visiting opinion writing. This week they formed an opinion about what animal makes the best pet. In the fall, I shared with you some opinion writing that your child wrote. This time we are adding just a little bit more to make their writing more interesting. Students are adding a detail to each of their reasons. They did a really nice job on this! I'll be sending them home next week sometime!
In Science we are starting a new unit called Patterns in the Sky. We will explore the way the Sun and Moon appear to move across the sky, investigate why the length of the day changes throughout the year, and create posters that document all we have learned. To enrich our learing, we will be taking a field trip to the Museum of Nature and Science to see a show at the planetarium. The field trip will be on Thursday, February 5. I'll need 5 volunteers to supervise groups of 4-5 students. Click here to sign up if you'd like to volunteer. .

Dear Parents,
Next week is our last week of school before our Winter Break. I’ve attached to this email Wilder’s Spirit week schedule! If you are going to be leaving before Friday, would you please let me know so that I can send my gift with them?. Thank you!
In writing and Social Studies, we continue to “travel” to different countries to learn about other holidays and their traditions and customs. In each country, they write facts in their travel journal and make a craft. This week they’ve been to Israel to learn about Hanukka, and to Mexico to learn about Los Posadas. The kids are enjoying getting to visit the other classrooms and getting to know the other first grade teachers, too!
This week we’ve been working on our midyear iReady assessment in math. We are also learning about 3-D shapes and the vocabulary that goes with each shape. I will give the end of unit assessment on our geometry unit on Monday.
Next week will be a fairly normal week for us Mon, Tues and Wed, aside from the Spirit Week activities. On Thursday, first grade will have what we call Reindeer Day. We will learn about reindeer and do some fun reindeer activities. On Friday, we will have Grinch Day. It’s a fun day full of Grinchy activities!
We are enjoyng reading the grandparent letters. I’m doing my best to get through as many as I can. I’ll send home letters after I read them and if I don’t get to read a letter to the class, I’ll send it home so it can be read and enjoyed at home. These are very special letters! I’m encouraging the kids to put the in a special place so they always have them!

Dear Parents,
It's been a great week back with the kids. It was fun hearing about their Thanksgiving week adventures!
This week we started our math unit on Geometry. This week has been focused on 2-dimensional shapes and the vocabulary that goes with it: sides, vertex (vertice) parallel. This unit has lots of fun hands on activities for students to explore composing shapes and decomposing shapes. Next week we'll focus on 3-dimensional shapes and the vocabulary for it.
The kids have been doing a really nice job taking their time on the mid year iReady assessment. This week we've been working on the reading portion of the test and next week we'll start the math portion.
With our Holiday's Around the World unit we are able to combine social studies and writing! So far the kids have "traveled" to Jordan to learn about Eid. Today, China to learn about the Chinese New Year. In their travel journal, they are writing facts they learn about each holiday. Next on their travel itenary is Israel, Mexico and India!
The class has earned their 200th PAW on our class PAW chart so to celebrate they voted on a Pajama day for tomorrow! They did ask if they could bring slippers to wear when inside the building. Sounds like a cozy way to spend the day!

Dear Parents,
Tomorrow we will be making apple sauce in the classroom! Please send in with your child one or two peeled and chopped up apples for us to put in the crockpot in the morning. It's a fun way to end our week and head into Thanksgiving break. At the end of the day we'll enjoy warm homemade applesauce together!
You should have received the letter your child wrote to their grandparents. They were sent home earlier this week in an envelope. If you sent me the grandparents name and address via the Google form, then the letter that came home is addressed and ready for you to put a stamp on and mail. If I didn't receive an address from you, the letter came home in an envelope ready for you to address and mail. Have your child finish the letter by writing their grandparents name next to "Dear____" on the letter. It's so fun when the grandparents write back and letters start arriving! The kids really enjoy hearing their grandparents letter read to the class.
Tomorrow is the last day for the Scholastic book fair. Students who have money in hand or in their account are able to shop before school or during morning recess. I believe they'll start packing up the book fair early in the afternoon.
We took our Unit 5 math assessment this week. I'll send them home in tomorrow's folder. Next Unit focuses on 2-D and 3-D shapes and the vocabulary that goes with them.
When we return from Thanksgiving Break, the first grade teachers will begin a rotation of Holidays Around the World. Each teacher will teach about a winter holiday and students will "travel" from one country (classroom) to another learning about various cuntries and traditiions over a three week period. This unit will combine social studies and writing as students will write about what they learned in each country.
Also after Thanksgiving break, we will be taking our mid-year iReady assessments. December 1-9 is when first grade will be taking the assessment. We limit the test taking time to about 20-30 minutes at a time so it can take several days for each assessment.
Here's whats happening after Thanksgiving break:

Dear Parents,
The Zoo field trip yesterday was so fun! The weather was perfect for a day at the zoo! The kids were able to see many animals! Thank you to all the parents who came along to make sure all kids were safe and had a great time! I've added some pictures to the Photo album page of this website. Parents - send me any pictures you took and I'll add them! Thanks!
On Monday, I’ll start sending home the holiday traditions letters that the kids wrote to their grandparents. They will be ready for you to stamp and drop in the mail! If I have not received an address from you, I will send the letter home in an envelope for you to address and mail to a grandparent or grandparents. It’s so much fun for the kids to get letters back and to be able to share the letters with the class. Thank you for your help with this project. (Look back to last week’s letter for a link to the Google Form).
In math we continue to work on subtraction and the many strategies they can use to subtract quickly and accurately. In today’s folder are pages from their math workbook for extra practice at home
In reading we are focusing on open syllable words like we, be, hi, flu etc…. Take a look at the Literacy tab on this website for a list of memory words that we have been working on.
In Social Studies, we’ve been learning about American symbols such as the bald eagle and the American flag (ask your child about the stripes and stars and colors of the flag and what they are a symbol of!).
In writing, we’ve written letters and memory book pages so their end of year memory book will have a page for their Veteran’s Day performance and for our Zoo field trip! It’s in these writing assignments that I look for transfer of the spelling skills, patterns and memory words. When we learn a spelling word or spelling rule, I expect to then see it in their writing.
On the "Volunteering" tab of this website is a link for you to sign up to read with students. If you signup for Monday, I'll have you help students address their Grandparent letters! Click here to sign up to volunteer
Today the library was transformed into the Scholastic Book Fair. Next week we’ll go in to take a look at what is there and kids will have the chance to fill out a wish list of books they would like. Check the Wilder Website for more information and times the book fair will be open.
Next Friday we will be making applesauce in the classroom! It will cook in a crockpot all day and we will enjoy a warm bowl of applesauce and muffins in the afternoon. Would you please pick up 1-2 apples at the store this weekend and send in 1 or 2 peeled and chopped up apples on Friday for us to put in the crockpot. Chopping them up into small pieces help them cook a little quicker. Thank you!
Here’s what’s happening next week:
Scholastic Book Fair all week.

Dear Parents,
Last Friday's Halloween parade and party was so much fun! Thank you to our wonderful room moms Libby, Claudia, Rachel and Melissa and all of the other families who donated or helped in any way. The kids had a great time!
Today was the first day the kids rehearsed their Veterans Day program on the risers with all of the other first grade classes. They'll practice again tomorrow and Monday. On Tuesday, Nov 11, they will perform for the school at 2:00 and for families that evening at 6:00.
In writing we are learning to write letters. To prepare for our upcoming Holidays and Traditions Around the World unit in December, we wrote letters today to their grandparents asking them to write back and tell about their holiday traditions when they were little. For more information on this project, read the letter I sent home to you today in your child's blue folder. I also included a link to the letter here. I also have a link to a Google Form for you to complete with your child's grandparents name and address. At school, I'll use this information to have the kids address the envelopes. I'll send the addressed envelope and letter home for you to mail. Thank you for your help with this fun letter writing activity!
Click here to complete the Google form for Grandparent addressess.
The kids have hit their goal of 170 PAWS tickets earned so far this year and have decided that they'd like to have a "hat day" tomorrow! They can wear any type of hat they'd llke to to school!

Dear Parents,
Tomorrow is Wilder’s Annual Halloween Parade and classroom parties! We will change into costumes after lunch at about 12:30. The costume change is easier when kids only have to slide something over what they are wearing rather than going to the bathroom to change. Of course, students who do need a little more privacy to change will be able to change in the restroom. At about 12:45 will head to the library to watch a short video while room moms get into the classroom to work their spooky magic and transform the room for our party! At 1:15 we’ll head out our outside classroom door to join the Wilder parade. Parents are welcome to watch the parade from anywhere around the school! At 1:45 we’ll return to the classroom for our party. Parents are welcome to attend! If you do decide to take your child home early, please be sure to let me know and check them out from the office. Thank you!
In writing, the kids finished up another personal narrative story! They all did a really good job adding details to make their story more interesting! I’ll send them home after I grade them!
Our next writing unit will focus on letter writing. The first letter we will write is to their grandparents asking them about holiday traditions when they were little! I’ll need your help with names and addresses of the grandparents they’d like to write to so I’ll be sending out a Google Form asking for this information. You can expect to receive this Google form next week sometime. Thank you for your help with this fun letter writing project.

Dear Parents,
It sounds like everyone had a really nice fall break. It was nice to have the kids back on Tuesday!
Next Friday, October 31, Wilder will have our annual Halloween Parade. The parade will start at 1:15. The best place to view the parade is in the grassy area outside of our classroom door. After the parade, we will return to the classroom for our Halloween party at 1:45. Our wonderful room moms have been hard at work planning and organizing activities and games for the kids. Parents are welcome to attend the classroom party. Students may bring their costume to school to change into after lunch.
We are going to have our first field trip to the Denver Zoo on November 13. I can take 5 parent volunteers to supervise a group of 4-5 students. Click here to read the time commitment details on the Sign up Form and to sign up if you'd like to come along!
This week we started unit 5 in math. This unit will focus on subtraction strategies.
In reading, we are learning about the ending "ed"and the sounds it can make at the end of a word: /ed/ /d/ and /t/. We are also learning to read and write words with the /er/ sound.
In writing, the kids are working on a personal narrative that includes lots of details to make their writing more interesting!
Tomorrow (Fri. October 24) is picture retake day. If you'd like your child to have their picture retaken or if they were not here on picture day, please let me know so I can send them to the gym to have their picture taken tomorrow.

Dear Parents,
Next week is Parent/Teacher conferences. Thank you for finding a time to come in and visit! A spot just opened up for Wednesday afternoon, so if that would work better for you, feel free to switch your time. In order to keep all conferences across grade levels on time, it’s important we start and end conferences on time. I’ll have a sign on the door asking you to come on in at your scheduled conference time.
We are just about finished with our math unit on addition strategies. I've added a picture of the strategies we are practicing on the math page of this website. We’ll take our unit 4 assessment next week. Unit 5 is all about subtraction and strategies for helping subtract efficiently and correctly.
This week we finished up opinion writing by writing about the book Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds. Next week, we’ll go back to writing personal narratives. This time focusing on adding more details to the story!
In literacy unit 4, the focus will be on the /er/ team both as part of a word and as an ending and /ed/ as an ending. Click on the literacy tab to see the new memory words for unit 4.
In science we will begin a unit called Shadow Town. The unit focuses on the town of Rjukan, Norway, which spends half the year with no direct sunlight. Over the course of the module, students explore light, shadows, transparency, and reflection.
I’m attaching a note to the email from Mrs. Gonzales regarding the first grade Veteran’s Day performance. Please reach out to her at agonzales@lps.k12.co.us with any questions. The 1st grade Veteran’s Day performance will be on Tuesday, November 11.

Dear Parents,
Tomorrow is Wilder's Annual Fun Run. First grade will meet out in the front of the school at about 1:05. After the race, we gather on the front lawn for awards. Parents are welcome to come and join in on the race. If you are coming but not planning to run/walk, I know they always need help at the finish line writing times on the kids running bib as they cross the finish line.
Students are encouraged to wear their Fun Run tshirt tomorrow! The t-shirts were purchased by the PTO and were sent home on Tuesday!
Information on ordering school pictures came home in yesterday's blue folder.
In writing we've been having fun learning about opinion writing. The kids have learned to state their opinion, give reasons and end with a conclusion.
In math, we are learning multiple strategies for adding. To add two numbers we have practiced counting on, knowing doubles facts to help with doubles +1 and doubles+2 and most recently we have been using the "make 10" strategy.
In science we're exploring ways animal adults communicate with and keep their young safe. We are planning a field trip to the zoo in November as a culminating activity for this unit. I'll send more info home on that soon.
The kids have hit their next goal of earning 110 PAWS tickets for following PAWS expectations in the classroom and have earned their next reward. The majority of the class voted on a stuffed animal day for tomorrow. Students may bring in their most well behaved stuffy tomorrow!

Dear Parents,
Next Friday, October 3 is Wilder’s Annual Fun Run. First grade will run during our specials time 1:05 – 1:50. Our wonderful PTO has purchased a t-shirt for each student! I’ll send the t-shirts home on Thursday so they can be worn on Friday! We will meet in the front of the school. Parents are welcome to join!
In writing, the students finished up a non-fiction piece about an animal of their choice. I’ll share both their fiction and non-fiction writing with you at conferences.
At noon today, an email went out with the link to the Parent/Teacher conference sign up form. I’ve also attached the link on this website.
In literacy, we will focus on the sounds ing, ang, ung, and ong next week. You’ll notice the Super Short that comes home on Monday will have words like cling, hang, bang. Having students read and re-read this text will help them to easily read and write this spelling pattern!
In math, our focus is on addition strategies. Students are working on knowing facts to 10 with automaticity. We are also learning strategies for adding within 20. Strategies such as using a number line, knowing doubles facts, doubles + one facts. The next unit will focus on subtraction strategies.
In Science, we’ve been looking at adult animals and their young: how are they the same and how are they different?

Dear Parents,
Tomorrow is picture day. First grade will have their pictures taken at around 10:30.
In literacy this week we are focusing on the sound /wh/ and working on memory words why, when, who what, where and which. A memory word game has been sent home to help with practice on these. In reading, we are reading stories from our SuperKids curriculum that are decodable. This means that all the words in the book have only sounds and words that have been taught. Students have been taught sounds like ch,sh, wh and memory words such as the ones on the Literacy page of this website. Having students read and re-read decodable text will help with reading fluency, which in turn, helps improve comprehension.
Superkids online is a great resource for books that are at your childs reading level. Refer back to the Back to School Night information slide show for how to access your child's Clever account. This is where you will find a link to SuperKids online.
In math we are finishing up Unit 3 which focused on place value and comparing numbers. Next week we'll start Unit 4. This unit focuses on addition strategies for adding numbers within 20. Look at the Math page of this website for a copy of the parent letter. I'll also send a copy home with the kids today.
In writing, we are learning to write non-fiction using facts we've learned about elephants. We did this whole group this week. Next week students will research an animal of their choice and write their own non-fiction paper!
I will be out of the classroom on Tuesday, but in the building, working with and assessing students individually.
On Friday, Sept 26 I will send out a sign up genius form for you to sign up for our upcoming Parent / Teacher Conferences (October 13-16) . All teachers will send the form to families at 12:00 on the 26th.

Dear Parents,
Today the kids met with their third grade buddies. Our class has partnered with Ms. Basner’s class. Each first grader is paired with a third grader. Today, they spent time getting to know each other. Each month, we’ll get together for an activity. It’s a lot of fun for all the kids and gives the first graders more familiar faces on the playground, bus and around the school!
In literacy this week we learned that sh makes the /sh/ sound like in shell. We read different Superkids stories that incorporated this sound spelling pattern. If you are ever curious what patterns we are working on, or what words may be on our weekly spell checks, please take a look at my Literacy Tab. We just finished Unit 1 and next week will begin Unit 2. WH words such as “why, when, who, what, where and which” will be our focus.
In writing, the kids finished their personal narrative stories. Next week we’ll begin learning how to write informational or non-fiction text.
In math we did a lot with base 10 this week. We know that you can trade out 10 loose ones for a group of 10. This can help us identify and count big 2-digit numbers like 87: it has 8 groups of 10 and 7 loose ones. I sent home this week a packet of extra math practice pages that focuses on place value. This optional packet is a great way to get extra practice during the week.
A Few Things to Note:
-The Fall Festival is this afternoon! It is free and fun for the whole family.
- Please check blue folders when they come home! Some folders are stuffed full of work from the past few weeks :)
-Remember to send library books back at least every Thursday so kids can check out new ones.

Dear Parents,
This week in writing we are planning and beginning to write our first personal narrative. That's a story about something they have done or something that has happened to them. The kids get very excited about this type of writing since they are full of lots of stories! I'll share them with you at conferences!
In math we finished up unit 2. Unit 2 focused on finding patterns when counting up and back within 120. Today the kids took their unit 2 assessment and we'll begin Unit 3 next week. Unit 3 will focus on place value and how understand, show and compare two-digit numbers.
In reading we're focusing on the sound of /ch/ and /tch/ and next week will be /sh/. You'll notice many ch, tch and sh words in the Super Short reading passage that I send home on Mondays. Remember to hang on to these for repeated readings.
In science we continue to learn about and observe the body parts many animals and how they use those body parts to survive in their habitat. We were able to schedule our Zoo field trip for November. I'll send home more information and a Sign Up form soon.
I've had some questions about Scholastic book orders. Parents can order Scholastic books anytime using the classcode found on the Scholastic page of this website. Books are delivered to school and we earn points for our classroom library when you use our class code!
The kids have worked hard together as a class to earn PAWS tickets towards a class reward. They have decided that they'd like their first PAWS reward to be a Stuffy Day! So tomorrow the kids can bring in a well behaved stuffed animal from home to spend the day with!

Dear Parents,
Thank you for coming last night to our Back to School Night. If you weren’t able to attend, you can find all the information on the Back to School Night slide show on our class website. I’m happy to answer any questions you have.
Today I sent home a review Super Kids workbook. We did most of the pages in this workbook. Feel free to have your child work on it at home. Next week we start Unit 1 of our Super Kids curriculum. Each unit focuses on a different spelling pattern and memory words. Click on the “Literacy” link on this website for a list of memory words and spelling patterns by unit. Next week we focus on the sounds of ch and sh.
In math we started unit 2. In this unit we are focusing on number patterns to 120. The kids are learning how to describe number patterns when counting up and back with in 120. Click on “Math” to see more and for suggestions on working with your child at home.
In writing we have been reviewing letter formation, writing sentences and reviewing end punctuation. Next week we’ll begin learning how to plan, write and edit a personal narrative.
Our Science unit is called Animal Reporters. Right now we are focusing on the body parts of animals and how those body parts are used for survival in the animals habitats. We are planning a field trip to the Denver Zoo in September to culminate this unit on animals! More information will be coming soon about the field trip.

Dear Parents,
It’s been another great week together. The kids have been to all four of the specials classes and have started the specials rotations. We’ve even had our first fire drill!
We are working on finishing up our iReady beginning of year assessments. We work just a little bit each day on it so they don’t get overtired. We’re finished with the reading portion. Next week we should finish up the math part of the test.
Attached to this email is a flyer from the office with the upcoming enrichment classes for fall.
In yesterday’s folder a reading passage called Is It Fun? came home. It’s a short reading passage that has the sounds and memory words that we have been focusing on. We’ve read it together in class. Please spend some time reading and re-reading this story at home. Each Monday a different reading passage will come home with the sounds and words we are working on that week. These are great for reading practice.
Back to school night is next week – Thursday, August 28. First grade will meet in the classrooms from 6:00 – 6:30.
I will be out tomorrow. If you need anything or need to get a message to your child, please call the office and they will deliver a message to the classroom.

August 15, 2025
Dear Parents,
What a fun week! The kids did such a good job this week learning new routines, meeting new friends, learning a new schedule, and getting to where they needed to be after school. I've really enjoyed getting to know them all a little bit this week. This is going to be a great school year!
At the end of each week, you'll receive a weekly update from me. I'll update you on what we're working on in class, list the next weeks activities and specials and anything else I think you would like to know.
This week has been hot! Having a water bottle at school keeps the kids hydrated and prevents long lines at the drinking fountain! We have a morning recess everyday and this is when the kids can enjoy a snack from home. By 10:00 they are hungry! Having a snack helps them make it to lunch at 11:30.
Next week we'll start our online iReady beginning of year assessment in reading and math. Students need headphones for this. Today we practiced logging on to their Chromebooks and exploring the apps on the Chromebook so they'd be familiar with it all for next week. Most kids had headphones but, I noticed some did not. If you're not able to get headphones here by Monday, let me know and I can hunt some down here at the school.
If your child orders a school lunch, it's really helpful to have their lunch number memorized. This week they each had a card with their lunch number on it so they could begin entering in their lunch number on their own. Ask your child about their lunch number and work on it this weekend at home if you need to! I sent a form with their lunch number on it home on Tuesday in their blue folder.
Back to School night is on August 28 from 6:00 - 6:30 in the classroom. This is a parents-only evening where I'll go over with you more details regarding first grade.
Birthdays are fun to celebrate in the classroom. We'll recognize birthdays with a birthday crown, a song and a small gift bag. If you'd like to bring in a small party favor trinket for each student you are welcome to do so. We are asking that food items are not sent in due to allergies. I'll go over more about birthday celebrations on BTS night.
Here's what's happening next week:
Specials:
Mon - Smart Lab
Tues. Wed.- Music
Thurs. Fri.- PE
Never hesitate to reach out if you have questions about anything. I know there's a lot going on and it's hard to keep track of it all! I'm happy to answer any questions or get you to someone who can answer your questions if I don't know!
Enjoy your weekend and soak up just a little bit more of summer together!

Hello First Grade Families!
I am so excited that we start school next week! My name is Tracy Hoeckelberg and I will be your child's first grade teacher. Please take the time to read through this entire email as I want to prepare you for the next few weeks.
This email is a quick check-in to be sure that you are aware of upcoming dates, ensure I have the correct contact information for you, and give you a little more information about myself. I will be sending out weekly emails directing you to my class website where you can read information on what is coming up and what we've been doing. If you want to check out the website now, here is a link.
Important Information
Open House / School Supplies-
If you are attending the Meet and Greet on Monday, August 11th from 2:00-4:00 pm, please bring your child's school supplies then! If you did not order a school supply kit, you will be purchasing your own supplies. There are a lot of things for little hands to carry and having supplies here ahead of time allows us to have more fun on the first day! Do not worry about labeling anything as we will take care of that in class.
At Meet and Greet, I will be asking you to fill out a form letting me know how your child will be getting home on the first day of school and how they will be getting home after the first day. To make sure everyone gets to where they need to be, I'll need to know if they will be picked up by a parent and where: at the door or in the drive through on the blacktop, if they are riding the bus and what their bus number is, or if they are going to SACC. If you will not be at the Meet and Greet, would you please email me with this information.
First Day of School - Tuesday, August 12th, soft start window: 7:35-7:50 a.m.
If you were unable to attend the Meet and Greet, please make sure your child brings their school supplies with them on the first day!
Please send a healthy snack with your child. Having a healthy snack in the morning helps kids stay focused and learn. I know it is a short day but it is never too early to get in the habit of packing a healthy snack!
Our first day is a half-day of school so students will be released at 11:50 a.m. We will be eating lunch at school at 10:25 so send students to school with a lunch or let them know they will be eating lunch from the cafeteria.
Back to School Night
Back to School Night will be Thursday, August 28th from 6:00 – 6:30 pm. I look forward to meeting all of you then and sharing more about first grade expectations, learning outcomes, and classroom management!
Postcards
I sent out Welcome Back postcards to each of the students, so if your child does not receive it in the next few days, please let me know!
I will be communicating with you through email this year. If this is not the email address you would like to receive communication at, let me know what you would like me to change it to. If there is a parent who is not currently on my email list, please let me know that as well!
Nicknames
If your child prefers to go by a different name than is listed in my roster, please let me know! I want to make sure your child is comfortable in our classroom!
About Me
If you would like to learn more about me, please visit my website. I also utilize the website to post weekly newsletters, photos, Scholastic book orders, and information on curriculum. The website is always linked under my signature. I will usually point you toward my website if you have any questions as most information can be found there and will stay posted there throughout the year!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this email. I look forward to meeting your children next week and can't wait to kick off the school year! Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions.
Mrs. Hoeckelberg
(This letter was emailed to all parents on August 7. If you did not receive it in an email, please let me know so I can check my email distribution list for your email.)
