First Grade Reading

Curriculum News

READING:

We will be busy developing into readers and it will be amazing the growth your child will make this year. Our daily routine consists of concepts taught by review, phonological and phoneme awareness, guided practice, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills. Thank you for supporting your child each week in turning in homework daily.

We will be working on our fluency by reading books that are a little below their level and consist of many high frequency words. Having your child read the paper book each night will increase their fluency, accuracy and decoding skills. We want to make sure your child is reading a "good fit" book each night. They should be able to read the book independently with some parental support. These types of books challenges our vocabulary and comprehension skills. Lastly, Please support your child in reading their word strip nightly. We want to reach level 40 by the end of first grade. These words are made up of high frequency words and do not always follow a pattern. They will need your support and when they are ready to read the strip at 95% then they will make a level change, and this is always exciting for them. Thank you for your continued support in first grade reading. It is a true partnership and by working together we will see your child develop into a reader this year!

Homework

Homework will be coming home Monday-Thursday. Reading logs are due on Monday each week. Please make sure reading logs are filled in each day and that you have a signature on them. To receive 10 points on your weekly log, your child needs to read 75 minutes per week. You can put the take home books on the log each week along with other books that your child is interested in reading. Homework and the paper Open Court books will be due the following day it is given. Please let me know if you have any questions. I Hope everyone has a great week!
