Kindergarten Reading

Curriculum News

Your child will come home with leveled book. Please have them read you this book each night and have them keep their book in a special spot (shoe box decorated). I want reading to be a special time for your child and I hope they get excited to share their successes with you.

Please make time to read each night with your child and have your child read to you. If you are reading, it is always fun to stop and have them pick out pink piggy words in the story. Talk about the characters, the setting of the story and the main idea. The time together reading, makes for wonderful teachable moments.

Our daily routine will look like this: We will be working on oral blending. As we listen carefully to how words sound we will try and figure out what the word is when it is broken down into two parts. For example the word dino...saur. We will put the two parts together to make the word dinosaur. We will continue to rhyme words and talk about when we rhyme our words end the same way. We also will work on word families. This is a easy and fun activity to do at home with paper, wipe board, chalk board, etc. Write a decodable word such as map, have your child decode the word. Then change the beginning sound of the word keeping the "ap" part of the word. For example it could be sap, trap, nap, lap, etc. Have your child read those words and make sure they understand that only the beginning sound changes. As time goes on, and we know our vowel sounds. you can then begin to change the medial sound in the word with different vowels. For example map, turns into mop. It is amazing how quickly they will catch onto reading different words.

It is always good practice to have your child read a book that contains words that can be easily decoded (CVC words). This will also improve their fluency. Have them warm-up with this type of text. I love when my students read Bob Books for warm-ups. Then have your child begin reading the take home book or a book they enjoy reading that is a little above their level where they can practice decoding, fluency and accuracy.

Spelling Words for the Week of May 3rd are a review of pink piggy words. Please have your child practice these words nightly.

  1. quit (remember q and u stick like glue)

  2. of

  3. me

  4. go

  5. is

Ways to practice spelling: Your number one goal is to make it FUN! You can have your practice their weekly spelling words by using a wipe board. They love to use these at school. You can give them the word and have them underline the pattern for the week. You can also use magnetic alphabet letters. They can spell the words on a cookie sheet. They can write the words on a blank sheet of paper and then trace each word with a colorful marker, crayon, etc. There are many ways to practice spelling while keeping it fun!

Please make sure your child is reading the book they bring home each night and that you put that title on the reading log. Ways to challenge your child is to work on blending words, breaking them down by sounds. Please make sure your child is getting in their 75 minutes of reading each week on their reading log. Thank you for all your support in reading, Together we will develop them into READERS!
