Many times when we draft, seeing red underlines below words stops us from continuing to write and get our ideas out. Turn off Spelling Suggestions. In a Google doc, click "View" > "Show Spelling Suggestions" (We are not worried about spelling when we draft, we are interested in ideas)
Turn it on again when you are in the editing process. ( We are focused on spelling in the editing process)

Highlight the first word of each sentence in your rough draft.

capital letter
variety of words to start your sentences
punctuation before that sentence with spaces
Right-click (Alt+Click on a chromebook) on a boring word in your writing piece ( in a google doc ) and "define it". Once you change your word, highlight it and "Insert - Comment" type your old boring word in the comment box. This allows you and your teacher to see all the editing/work you have done.
Have students turn spelling suggestions on again when they are in the editing process. This helps them understand the different parts of the writing process. (We are not worried about spelling when we draft, but we are interested in fixing spelling in the editing process)
