IXL is an excellent resource to use at home if you are looking to extend homework outside of what is assigned in 3rd grade. IXL provides systematic practice with immediate feedback. acrossed a wide range of skills. We use IXL in the classroom on a regular basis so your child may have completed some of the sections but they can always repeat sections for more practice! Please check out the links below to learn more about how to use IXL at home and the incredible benefits it provides for students. Based on your child's current level you can chose to have them begin in 2nd, 3rd or 4th grade. We recommend just having them start from the first section and go in order, all of the skills aligned to Colorado State Standards. If you notice your child needs more work on a certain skill you can always go directly to that skill and have them work through the sections. For more information on how the learning sections work check out the video linked below.
Fun Ideas for practing Multiplication and Division Facts
1. Play with dice. Really. Toss the flash cards and practice adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing using the numbers you roll on dice.
2. Flashlight Math. Use the flashcards and flip two cards at a time. Kids shine a flashlight on the one they know and answer that one. Simple. Don’t have a flashlight? Make a fun wand out of anything around the house, perhaps? Use a stick or a light saber. Anything that works for your kid.
3. Use electronics. We love My Math Flashcards App on the iPad and Math Practice Flashcards on my android phone. There are a gazillion flash card apps out there. I’m sure any would do the trick, and if you have five minutes and your kid says, ‘Can I play a game on your phoooooone?’ Say ‘Why yes you may! I’m so very glad you asked. . .
‘
4. Write the answer... Or paint the answer. Water on Cement or Chalk on Sidewalk or Window Crayon on the window. One person flashes the cards and the other guy writes.

Math in the Real World!!
Another amazing way to help your child or extend math learning outside of school is to provide opportunities for your child to use and to see how math is used in the real world. Here are some ideas to help with that:
A trip to the store - Have your child bring a little pad of paper to add up or round and estimate how much a few of the items will cost. Talk to them about change and quantities (oz, lbs, liters, gallons etc.) Point out items arranged in arrays (cup ckaes in a 2x6 container, how many total cupcakes).
If you are planning a get together and need to buy items for guests (We are will have 10 people coming for dinner, there are two steaks in each pack, how many packs will I need for all the guests to have a steak?) Let them help you do the math to make sure there is enough.
Baking and Cooking - this is a great way to help your child apply math in the real world. Not only quantities (cups, oz, tsp,) but FRACTIONS! (1/3 Cup, 1/4 Tsp).
Household projects- This is great to help students understand measurements (inches, ft, yards etc.) also FRACTIONS! and area and perimeter (We have a patch of dead grasss and need to cover it with seed or sod, let's go measure the dimensions to find to area so we know how much we need).
