Quizbowl is a game in which two teams compete head-to-head to answer questions from all areas of knowledge, including history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, popular culture, sports, and more. Imagine Academically Speaking, but more fun. (apologies to any gt teachers reading this) The defining feature of Quizbowl is the use of a “buzzer system” that lets players interrupt the reading of a question when they know the answer. That element adds a dimension of confidence, anticipation, and rapid recall to a game about knowing facts. Those “tossup” questions are answered individually, but doing so earns one’s team a chance at a three-part “bonus” question. Bonus questions are worth more points and allow collaboration, but are generally more difficult.
The HMS Quizbowl Club is about having fun with Quizbowl and opening up enjoyable and meaningful experiences with the sport. In addition, members can learn new things about various topics and perhaps even gain a new interest. So if you want the chance to participate in Quizbowl, casual and competitive, come and join us and become part of the club!
The HMS Quizbowl club’s main activity will be, of course, Quizbowl games. What we strive to achieve is to have more individuals interested in Quizbowl and sharing our passion for this activity. There are 2 types of Quizbowl games: Casual games and competitive games. Casual games are played within the club and are purely for fun. Members will form teams and then will proceed over the course of the school year with round-robin games. Competitive games are games played between schools at tournaments. After a few meetings, the President, with the approval of the supervisor and other administrators, will choose players based on their performance in the casuals, as well as their dedication to the game. These players will be split into teams of 4, who will both compete in competitive tournaments. If you want a chance to be on this roster, you should put in your best effort during casuals, and display knowledge about a given subject. Remember, we play to win, and will only pick players we believe will perform well in a competitive setting.
