Irregularly spelled words are called “Heart Words” because some part of the word needs to be learned “by heart.” Heart Words are also used so frequently that they need to be read and spelled automatically.
Students will work on a new set of heart words each 9 weeks and should have 90% of the words mastered by report card time. They will still need to continue to practice the previous 9 weeks' lists as the year progresses. Make sure to practice heart words in random order. You might not realize it, but students will memorize the list as it is listed here. This is not how they will be assessed!
