Reading helps children become stronger in all subject areas, so I encourage them to read, read, read! I don't assign a lot of homework, but I do expect my students to study for tests and to read at least 15-20 minutes each night in a book of their choice. (Along with "status of the class" checks, I plan small group "book talks" so students can discuss what they are currently reading with each other and with me.) I send home written homework only when I feel that extra skills practice is needed outside of the classroom. To help build responsibility, I encourage students to write down all assignments and upcoming quizzes / tests in their agenda books daily. I also send out reminders about tests and upcoming events through Class Dojo messages. (Please let me know if you need information about how to sign up for Class Dojo.)
