The primary purpose of a history and social science education is to prepare students to have the knowledge and skills to become thoughtful and active participants in a democratic society and a complex world. “Government of the people, by the people, for the people” is not just a historical phrase from Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address,” but an ideal that must be renewed and reinvigorated by each succeeding generation. The future of democracy depends on our students’ development of knowledge, skills, and dispositions that will enable them to embrace democracy’s potential, while recognizing its challenges and inherent dilemmas.
In Civics class, students will learn about Democracy in the United States. We will discuss where this style of government began, how it was intended to operate by the Founding Fathers, and how it operates today. Students will examine national issues through the lens of historic and current events. Within this course we will be hearing from a variety of differing opinions regarding the specifics of our government, and we will be respectful of any and all opinions, even if we don't personally agree with them. It is important to be open to new ideas and opinions, because, just like our nation, WE are growing and changing every day!
I have been teaching for ten years across almost all grade levels (5-12) in some capacity and this is my 6th year in Lowell. I have a strong desire to push young people to think critically about their government and life around them. Graduating from UMass Lowell, I am certified in History as well as English and incorporate a lot of writing into my classes. The purpose of this is to build students' abilities and confidence as they grow as learners as well as citizens. I absolutely love History and sharing that passion with my students!
Aside from simply teaching history, I love to travel and experience history and new cultures around the world! In addition to personal traveling, I led a high school trip to Germany in 2017 and I hope to be able to lead an 8th grade trip to Washington D.C in the future. There is so much to see in this world and I love sharing those experiences with my students whenever possible!
I have a deep passion for the topics I discuss with my students and it is my aim to prepare them not only for the rigors of high school and the real world, but to open them up to new ideas and experiences that will help them figure out what their passion is and have the confidence and skills to pursue it!
