Speech & Debate

Welcome!

Here you will find a little about our team, a little about our practices, a link to our competition calendar, as well as information about our coaches and captains. We welcome all students to our team. The great part about Speech and Debate is that you can join and attend two tournaments, or you can join and attend 20 tournaments. Either way we are happy to have you here! Always feel free to email Ms. Rose with ANY questions or concerns.

About our team: The LOHS Speech and Debate Team is comprised of a variety of students. We have performers, debaters, and ELL students. We have students who love theater, current events, history, poetry, politics, and more. There are 18 different competitive events. If you are interested, we can find an event that's a good fit for you.

Practice: We have seperate practice times for novice and varsity students, weekly team meetings, and coaches host office hours. Come to as many as you'd like!
Novice Practice: Tuesdays at 5pm
Varsity Practice: Friday at 5pm
Weekly Team Meetings: Wednesday at 5pm
Coach Office Hours: Vary by coach. See sign up sheets below!

What are Office Hours?

Office hours are a great time for a practice debate, or one-on-one help from a coach. Each of our coaches have times available each week. Sign up in advance on their google sheet and they will send you a zoom or google meet link prior to the scheduled time.

Good Morning All!! My name is Robyn Rose and I use she/her pronouns. I have been coaching/competing since 2000. There are three things that I love most about Speech and Debate. First, the inclusivity of all students, second seeing students find themselves, and third the sense of community our team builds.

Hello! My name is Mikay Parsons and I use they/them pronouns. I competed in policy debate in high school as well as parliamentary debate in college while I attended Lewis & Clark College. I have coached at Lake Oswego for the last 3 years, and I am excited to coach you all virtually this year from sunny San Diego!

Heyo! I’m Anushka, part of the class of 2021. I’ve participated in a variety of Speech + Debate events, but my favorites remain: Domestic/International Extemp, Informative, Parliamentary/SPAR, and Impromptu. Outside of Debate, I enjoy going on Hikes, and exploring Portland’s food scene. Can’t wait to meet you all!

Hi. My name is Lauren Zhang and I’m a sophomore. I use she/her pronouns. I mostly do Lincoln-Douglas debate, but I’ve dabbled in Radio, Extemporaneous speaking, and Parliamentary debate as well. If you want help prepping your debate case, clarification on certain debate concepts, or want to try your hand at philosophical frameworks, I’d be glad to help out! Besides debate, I read books, do origami, and play violin (and viola, but we don’t talk about that).

Hey! I’m Grace Goverman. I’m a senior and I use she/her pronouns. I’ve done most of the events during my time on the team, but I focus on Congress, radio, extemporaneous speaking, and prose reading. If you want to try congressional debate or want help editing your prepared speeches, I’m here to help! Outside of debate, I enjoy writing for the school newspaper, reading, and knitting.
