The 6th grade language arts curriculum is based around the four basic areas of learning a language: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. To become proficient in all four areas, we will be doing a variety of activities. Students will be engaged in independent novels, interest-based reading groups, investigating informational material, computer-based lessons and assessments, reading authentic literature, vocabulary and grammar boosters, and writing for enjoyment as well as for skill-based learning. Additionally, we will be using an array of materials to cover the topics. The class has a "workshop" approach in both reading and writing. The following curriculum includes but is not limited to:
A. Novels
Mentor Text(s)--teacher reads a book with the whole class of students to teach specific skills
Book Club books--students read & respond, alone or together, to a book at his/her reading level & ultimately share their responses in their club
Independent novel(s)--student reads a novel of his/her choice by him/herself and responds by him/herself
B. Paired Text passages (Informational material, short stories, models of genres in writing) (supplemental)
C. Informational Text Reading
D. Scholastic News, SCOPE and Read Magazines (supplemental)
E. Choice Piece Writing, Assigned Writing and Presentations
