7th Grade English Language Arts (ELA)
The purpose of this course is to further develop the reading, writing, listening, speaking, and critical thinking skills necessary for academic and personal success. During this year, we will focus on literature study, using informational text as a means to gain knowledge, vocabulary development, writing, grammar, and research skills. Fiction and nonfiction texts will be used. StudySync is LUSD’s Middle School ELA program and will utilize both online and paper formats. Additionally, this course will include the use of classroom novels to be read, discussed and studied together.
The curriculum for 7th grade is StudySync. This programs provides rigorous reading, writing, and critical thinking assignments to address Common Core Standards for California.
Independent Reading Practice:
Students are expected to complete independent reading outside of the school day.
This NIGHTLY reading will be a mixture of assigned material and self-selected books. (Please note: students may be assigned a book or passage that they have previously read.
Students are expected to re-read these materials, as these pieces are being used to teach and practice 6th grade standards.)

Meets/Mastery of Standard
Student has the correct answer to the prompt/question. Student follows ALL directions provided and has demonstrated thorough understanding. Student’s work shows mastery.
Proficiency of Standard
Student's work nearly demonstrates mastery of the concept. Answer is lacking in minor details or contains partial textual evidence to show complete understanding. Student’s work requires additional practice.
Emerging proficiency of Standard
Student's work does not shown understanding of the concept being evaluated. Student may have not followed directions. Student's work shows limited progress towards mastery of concept and requires remediation.
Insufficient evidence of proficiency or Incomplete Attempt
Work indicates a lack of understanding of assignment or concept. Student may have submitted work that was incomplete or unfinished. Limited attempt was made to seek out additional information or assistance.
No Attempt
Student did not attempt to complete activity. Student submitted no work for evaluation and made no attempt to request assistance.
