What Are the ATL Skills?
The Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills are essential life skills that help students become successful, independent learners. Rather than focusing on subject area content, ATL skills teach students how to manage their mindset and emotions, think critically, research responsibly, communicate effectively, and get along well with others. Developing these skills helps students become independent, confident learners both in school and everyday life. The ATL skills are organized into five core skill clusters, as illustrated in the graphic.
How the ATL Skills are Integrated into the Community Project
The Community Project gives students the opportunity to independently demonstrate and apply the ATL skills they have developed throughout the MYP. Students are evaluated on how effectively they use these skills across all four stages of the project's cycle of inquiry and action:
Criterion A: Investigating
Research Skills
Criterion B: Planning
Self-Management (Affective) Skills
Criterion C: Taking Action
Thinking, Communication & Social Skills
Criterion D: Reflecting
Thinking Skills
