The Logan-Magnolia Community School District calls for a special election on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, presenting voters with one question to address classroom expansion to the existing K-12 facilities and the addition of a second competitive gymnasium/safe room. Below is an overview of what this project will provide our district, students, and community.
Provides Updates to Facilities and New Classrooms – this project provides the Lo-Ma CSD much needed updates to its facilities and new classrooms that will allow it to keep class sizes small.
o This project will provide Lo-Ma with new, up-to-date science labs and classrooms for all students (Elementary, Junior High, and High School), a new elementary music room & storage space, a separate space for an elementary library, and a dedicated life-skills classroom for our high-functioning special needs students.
o Additional classroom space will alleviate space issues in both the elementary and secondary and provide enhanced learning opportunities for science and music.
o Renovated classrooms will create learning environments with appropriate updates, connections, and tools to effectively access information and collaborate.

Addresses the Need for a Second Gym and Enhances Safety – this project allows the Lo-Ma CSD to meet its dire need for a second competitive gym, which will double as a tornado shelter.
o The Panther Dome will allow Lo-Ma to no longer be the ONLY school in Harrison County and the ONLY school district in the Western Iowa Conference without a second competitive gym to allow for Varsity & JV play simultaneously, and will allow Lo-Ma to host state qualifying events like sectional wrestling and regional basketball games that it cannot host presently.
o The Panther Dome is the most cost-efficient option for a second gym (as both construction cost and heating/cooling are cheaper than a more traditional gym) and not only will act as a multi-use classroom but also will prevent our students from being disadvantaged with insufficient physical education instruction and practice time compared to other districts.
o The Panther Dome will allow more student athletes to hone invaluable life skills like leadership, perseverance, work ethic, time management, interpersonal communication, confidence, teamwork, accountability, self-discipline, mental toughness, resilience, commitment, and responsibility, which numerous studies have linked to success after graduation, and will allow us an opportunity to keep our students and teachers in a classroom for an extra hour of instruction.
The Lo-Ma High School gymnasium is the only regulation sized court in the district (84’ x 50’).
The elementary multi-purpose room/gym is not regulation size, has a tile floor with court dimensions of 65’ x 50’, and no space for spectators.
Spreads the Tax Impact More Equitably – this project is fiscally responsible and spreads the cost equitably.
o The bond results in a net increase of only $1.86342 per one thousand dollars of taxable value in property taxes, which will allow the Lo-Ma CSD to still have a property tax levy lower than Treynor, Underwood, and Woodbine’s property tax levies, and very comparable to Missouri Valley, Riverside, and Griswold.
Makes Our Communities More Attractive
o This project will make the Logan and Magnolia communities more attractive to young families and, accordingly, will allow our communities to continue to be places in which people want to live, work, and play, which in turn will allow property resale values to remain strong and more than make up for any increase in property taxes paid.
Proposed improvements to the elementary library and the science classrooms.
Proposed improvements to the varsity gymnasium.
Ensures Our School District Remains Competitive
o This project will provide the Lo-Ma CSD with much-needed improvements that will allow Lo-Ma CSD to remain competitive with neighboring districts and prevent open enrollments that would cause the district to lose funding and the ability to retain top-quality administrators and teachers.
