Auburn's school building has been identified as a "transitional" building by KDE. That means that engineer and architect inspections have determined that due to the age and condition, no major renovations or additions can occur. The building must accommodate the projected student population and have a remaining minimum thirty (30) year life expectancy. The current building does not meet either of these requirements.
A "construction nickel" tax was approved by the board in June. This tax will generate $1,121,789 annually for the district. The state match is $0.82 per $1.00. That would generate $919,867 in additional funds.
This money could allow Logan County Schools to begin design of a new building in the spring of 2026, with completion in time for the 2028-29 school year (3 years total). Without the construction nickel, it will take ten years for the district to have the bonding capacity to build a new Auburn School.
