Philosophy

The Mathematics Department strives to instill in each student a conceptual understanding of and procedural skill with the basic facts, principles and methods of mathematics. We want our students to develop an ability to explore, to make conjectures, to reason logically and to communicate mathematical ideas. We expect our students to learn to think critically and creatively in applying these ideas. We recognize that individual students learn in different ways and provide a variety of course paths and learning experiences from which students may choose. We emphasize the development of good writing skills and the appropriate use of technology throughout our curriculum. We hope that our students learn to appreciate mathematics as a useful discipline in describing and interpreting the world around us—and for its own intrinsic beauty.
