Classroom Expectations

Dear Families,

Welcome to 5th grade! I am VERY excited to meet your children tomorrow as we officially begin the 2023-2024 school year. I wanted to share with you our class expectations and procedures that I will be discussing with the students on the first few days of school.

The first day of school both classes will build classroom expectations together by discussing, “What Makes a Great Classroom?”  Once we’ve talked about our expectations, we will establish a class agreement together. We will work towards values like respect, responsibility, and enthusiasm. All students will sign the agreement. This is our promise to each other for a successful year of learning and fun.

Agenda Books:

At the conclusion of both of my AM and PM classes, I will stamp agenda books.

*Please sign the agenda books each night*

In terms of class rewards, we will have an AM and PM marble jar where the classes can earn marbles for behaviors such as: The entire class following directions, walking down the hall quietly,  the entire class completing homework, etc. Once we fill up the marble jar, the class decides on the class reward. This is a great way for students to build a positive classroom culture where students work together towards a goal. My hope is that students will utilize the reward system as a positive way to take self-responsibility for their learning and behavior.

Many parents have asked me in the past, "How can my child be recognized within the school for a job well done?"

Positive Paws: Students will be recognized for making good choices and demonstrating the four Pine Road pillars throughout the week in various locations in the school by all staff members.

Pine Road Proud Pillar Recognition: Each quarter will focus on a specific Pine Road Pillar.  Monthly assemblies (virtual and in-person)  will take place that emphasize the pillar of focus.  At the end of each marking period, teachers will be asked to nominate a student(s) from their class who consistently goes “above and beyond” in demonstrating the qualities associated with that pillar.

Silver Spoon Award (Cafeteria): At the end of the month, points will be tallied for each class.  For the class that has the most points in the entire school, they will join Mr. Cole and Mrs. McMullan for an extra recess.  They will also receive a certificate.  The class with the second highest total will receive an ice cream treat in the cafeteria.

A copy of the SCHOOLWIDE positive behavior support matrix cn be found on the virtual backpack.
