String Orchestras
Even if we haven't played all in one synchronous space this year, we have had the opportunity to explore new ways of interacting musically! Whether improvising over Google Meet, co-creating compositions or working with our Artist-in-residence to arrange original songs, this fall has been full of music-making. Check out some of the highlights of our work below!
Chamber Strings
Our auditioned extracurricular Chamber Strings group has been meeting weekly via Google Meet. Instead of practicing previously composed repertoire, our students have been co-creating projects remotely. Click the thumbnail to the left to watch an original composition, A Day in the Life, written, performed, and filmed by Chamber Strings members and edited by Sophia Berman (11th grade). Through this project, the students show how it feels to find meaning and connection while attending school virtually.
This semester, we also experimented with musical games and improvisation exercises over Google Meet. Despite significant latency issues that present challenges for synchronous playing, we can find ways to improvise and create with those around us in real-time! In this example, students from Chamber Strings improvise a performance using only five notes. Through "mute/unmute" cues and other physical cues, members take turns performing their improvisations.
String Orchestra
For our co-curricular String Orchestra group, we blended activities that involved performing, creating, responding, improvising, and actively listening to music as a group. Below, you will experience some more traditional performances along with newly created works.
Full Group Performance
How do you perform as a group when you are working in a hybrid setting? Some students are virtual. Some students are hybrid. We get creative! Below, we share the process of learning and recording a virtual orchestra video.
Students use SmartMusic software to record and submit an audio recording of their part.
For this project, we used Upbeat to capture video performances. Some students voluntarily submitted videos that were synchronized on the app.
Using Soundtrap and WeVideo, the audio and video were edited together to create the performance. Senior Jaymie Roddy helped put all of the parts together!
Creative Small Group Projects
After recording the large group project, each student had two weeks to explore a creative portfolio project. Working alone or with a group, students focused on various self-selected work, including playing by ear, transcribing popular songs, creating original compositions, and collaborating with others to learn new music.
For their small group project, many of the senior orchestra members collaborated to make this virtual video. They selected the music, rehearsed remotely, recorded their parts, and edited this together. Enjoy A Winter's Night in the Forbidden City by Kenneth Baird. [Click on the thumbnail to the right]
Original Compositions
Some students in String Orchestra elected to spend their project time composing new music and arranging songs by ear. Click below to listen to the original compositions and view a pdf of the music.
Winter's End by Liam Resnick (9th grade)
Forest by Jasmine Shao (10th grade)
Snow Storm by Maggie Cejne (10th grade)
Year End by Lilianne Simons (10th grade)
One of the skills we work on throughout the year is "playing by ear." Students listen and copy popular songs, eventually creating arrangements that can be performed by the orchestra. Below, you can listen to three PBE arrangements created by LOMOSO students.
Artist-in-Residence Program
This year, we have the honor of working with composer and singer/songwriter Andrew Lipke through our artist-in-residence program. Andrew is meeting with our students regularly to co-create string orchestra arrangements of original songs. We will continue working on arrangements throughout the school year with the goal of a culminating performance in 2021 in which Andrew will perform alongside our songwriters and orchestra members. Click on the videos below to listen to the winning songs!
Thank you for taking the time to experience this virtual celebration of all that our LOMOSO program is! In the spring, we are looking forward to a virtual pops concert and the culmination of our artist-in-residence collaboration. Please note that while some students did not share videos for this page, every LOMOSO student was involved in making these projects. For a full list of students, see below:
