Another Great Field Trip to SDCOE Innovation Center ⬆️
Last week students traveled down to the SDCOE Innovation Center. It is the 3rd time we have visited this fun location - dedicated to providing hands-on career and college readiness experiences to middle school students. This time students learned all about creating and recording a podcast. We also had a group doing some design thinking and robotics/coding. It is so great to get students off campus learning and enjoying experiences beyond the classroom!
Happy Memorial Day!!!
Amazing Final 2023-24 Band & Choir Performance!
Friday night the band and choir put on an amazing show displaying the impressive growth they have all made this year as musicians and artists. It is truly remarkable every year to experience the tremendous progress students make at Parkway Academy - some of the students first time musicians and/or vocalists! Friday they all played and sang with such power and poise - it was a sight to see and such a delight to listen to! Big thanks to Mr. Sacco the Parkway music and vocal teacher who does an outstanding job teaching the students!

This week is Staff Appreciation Week!
We have an amazing staff at Parkway Academy!
From the teachers to the paraprofessionals to the social workers to the counselors to the office staff to the cafeteria crew to the custodians to the psychologists to the speech therapists to the campus attendants to the bus drivers to the grounds crew to the assistant principals!
It takes a big staff of amazing humans to make Parkway run everyday!
We are going to celebrate and do a few special things for the staff this week.
If your student or family wants to participate here are a few ideas...
Send a positive hand written note or Jupiter message. The power of a kind statement can really make an impact!
Ask them what they need! Send a Jupiter message asking if a teacher or staff members needs anything!?!
Send a sweet or savory treat with your student!
Nothing Wrong with a Starbucks Gift Card! Caffeine keeps us going some days! Ha!
NEW - AEROSAL CANS and/or AXE Aerosal Deodorant - Not Allowed at School
We have always a policy for not allowing aerosal cans on campus - it just what not an issue until last week.
Apparently there is some new social media trend challenging students to pop deordant cans making a big smell cloud of the spray. Of course this is disruptive and the smelly cloud can be quite dangerous for students with asthma, etc.
All aerosal cans needs to stay at home. They are not allowed on campus. Any can seen will be confiscated by teachers. If a family wants it back they can pick it up in the office. If a student is caught popping a can there will be consequences.
Thanks for supporting us!

REVIEW - PLEASE READ - CAASPP Testing Information
Dear Parkway Academy Families,
This week, your child will continue taking the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) test. The testing dates are April 15 - May 10, 2024 (please see the testing calendar here). There is no special testing schedule - all students will be testing in their ELA and Math classrooms/periods. Please know that the CAASPP test is one small measure of your child’s reading and math progress.
As with each school day, we can work together to make your child’s learning and testing experience positive and successful. Here are a few things that you can do to support your child:
Sleep and rest: A good night’s rest helps with focus and concentration.
Breakfast: We need breakfast nutrition as brain fuel. Your child can also arrive early to eat breakfast at school.
Encouragement: Another form of nourishment is encouragement! Let your child know how amazing they are!
It is also important that your child comes to school with their Chromebook fully charged. They should also bring their charger and if they have headphones that plug into their device, they can bring those, too.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me and/or your child’s teachers.

THANK YOU - Check You Mood Week!!!
Thank you to the Parkway Social Worker and Counseling Team, Parkway students, and Parway families! Check your mood week was a huge success. We brought awareness to students about the mental health and overall wellbeing. We will partner with San Diego Youth Services again next year!
Parkway Academy is partnering with San Diego Youth Services HERE Now program to provide a “Check Your Mood Week” filled with discussions about emotions and ways to help your friends. Our goals in participating in this program are straightforward:
To help our students understand that depression is a treatable illness, and help them assess whether or not they may have symptoms consistent with depression
To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression
To provide students training in how to identify serious depression and potential suicidality in a friend
To inform teens that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to a responsible adult about their concern

To inform teens that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to a responsible adult about their concerns
Check Your Mood Week will occur during the week of April 15, 2024 and it will be directed to only our 7th graders this year. Students will have presentations on Monday and will check in with SDYS members throughout the week if they have requested to talk.
On 3/15/24 students received a passive consent form during their history class. If you would NOT like for your student to participate, please complete the form. You can also access the form here.
If you would like to know more information about Check Your Mood week, we will be having virtual parent presentations on 4/11/24 from 5:30 PM-6:30 PM. Below you will find the links/passcodes to join the meeting:

NEW - CAASPP Testing Information
Dear Parkway Academy Families,
In a couple of weeks, your child will be taking the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) test.
Warmly,
Geri Little
Instruction and Data Support Teacher

Alan, Asher, & Mars - Going Big on Friday Afternoon at Skate Club!
ASB Dress Up - Trimester III
School attendance is very important. We do not want students to come to school if they are sick. But, we should all strive to have children attend school as much as possible. Mountains of research suggests that daily attendance has an incredible impact on student learning and success. Simply put... Students can't learn and grow if they are not at school.
To stress the importance of school attendance the Parkway Academy Social Worker Team has created monthy attendance challenges. The challenge for the month of March is to maintain perfect attendance. Every week 3 students with perfect attendance will be randomly chosen and will recieve a certificate and a gift card. How cool is that???
Also, teachers always want to communicate that if your child does need to stay home - They can always access most of their classes/assignments via google classroom. So... If they are home sick, but still able to do some classwork, it would be great for them to login and try to keep up with school work!
Wellness Wednesday have become a tradition at Parkway Academy! Students look forward to them and enjoy the weekly routine meant to boost mental health and overall student well being!
Last week students in the Energy & Environment Elective collaborated to learn about solar energy and to build/test solar cars! Learning as a team and engaging in hands-on activities is pretty cool!
We had another LOUD and CRAZY Spirit Assembly last week. 6th and 7th grade students on the Red, White, or Blue Teams completed to win points to earn a big prize at the end of the year!
NEW - End of Trimester II - Report Cards
The End of Trimester II is Friday, March 8th.

Congratulations to Ms. Allen for being named the Parkway Academy Teacher of the Year. Ms. Allen join the Parkway team last year and has quickly developed into an amazing educator. Parkway Academy JADIES Volume II Hip Hop Crew
Last Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday night, the JADIES Volume II performed to the standing room only crowds at the annual Helix HS Hip Hop Night. It was amazing to see them on stage. Ms. Brown starting building our Hip Hop dance program last year and the progess they have made as a team is truly phenomenal. They performed with other high schools from all over the East County, including Helix, Steele Canyon, Granite, El Cap, and Patrick Henry. It was an incredible experience for the students!
GHS & Parkway Academy Collaboration
Last week a group of Grossmont HS Seniors came over to Parkway to lead a Heart Smart Presentation - meant to teach students how to administer heart compressions and use AEDs to save the life of a person experiencing cardiac arrest. It was a great hands-on activity that got Parkway students learning from and working with HS seniors.
After the presentation, and practicing CPR, the GHS students shared their future plans and how learning about Sport Medicine and being in a Pathway at Grossmont is helping to get into to college and pursue careers. Several of the students are planning on going to medical school and one of the students already uses everything she has learned to be a beach life guard. It was a fantastic event!

School Rules and Expectations
Last week Mr. Crook, Ms. Chaniot, and Mr. Ruth went to all 7th Grade ELA classes to give a quick presentation on school rules and expectations. We typically do this every February or March as we approach Spring Break. This Thursday we will do a similar presentation in all 8th Grade ELA classes. It would be great if you review the presentation with your student - they can explain all the details and information we shared during the presentation.
Spring - Rules and School Expectations
Family Support with Social Media & Phone Use
Social media use with middle school students is always something that should be monitored by families. The last several weeks we have seen an increase in students participating in group chats with incredibly negative language/content. To some degree, this is beyond our control and responsibility as a school, but when it impacts daily school operations, we do intervene and we also want to remind families to please support us with phone use/social media at home.
Here is a great resource for families...
Common Sense Media - Social Media
As parents/families it is important to foster independence in middle school. But, please also remember they are children who need guidance, support, and adult supervision so they can thrive as adolescents!

This is an amazing opportunity for Parkway 8th Graders!!! FREE Academies that take place over the upcoming Spring Break! The slots are going to fill up so fast! Each academy will be held over five days for four hours per day. This week will include in class instruction, hands-on learning, a minimum of one industry tour, and a culminating showcase where students will present their projects to industry professionals, their parents, and district personnel. Seating is limited, so register early. These academies are connected to the great electives we are offering at Parkway - as well as prepare middle school students for some of the great electives/pathways they can participate in at Grossmont HS and the other GUHSD schools in the near future. We hope that many Parkway students will take advantage of this great offer!!!
ASB Valentines Dance - So Fun!
Here are a few shots from another AMAZING Parkway Dance! Big thanks to the Parkway ASB and DJ Hersch. The school dances at Parkway are really just big-fun-joyful parties!!! We had to bring it inside this time due to the rain - but that gave us a reason to turn on the super awesome lighting system in the auditorium!
iReady Testing is COMPLETE!
We finished all iReady Diagnostic testing last week. We are examining the data and we are seeing significant growth in reading comprehension and mathematical understanding! Thanks to all of our students for doing the best and staying focused to complete these assessments!
Recent False Fire Alarms
You probably heard from your students that we had a series of false firm alarms last week. This is not good and something we take seriously - and conduct thorough investigations. Students who pull a fire alarm will/did receive a severe consequence.

This past weekend a group of Parkway Academy Teachers attended the Greater SD Math Conference. It was a fun morning thinking and learning together. It is important for us as educators to continue to learn and grow - just like students! Dr. Zelt was even one of the presenters! We have great teachers at Parkway Academy!
We continue taking students to visit all of the surrounding high schools in La Mesa/Spring Valley. GUHSD is a school choice district, so we think it is important that Parkway students understand the options. Last week a group of students visited Monte Vista. Here a group learns about computer coding from a HS student!

New Hall Pass Policy - Going Really Well!!!
Following Winter Break we started enforcing a new hall pass policy school wide. We have seen a dramatic increase in use/misuse of hall passes this year - and it adds up to students just being out of class too much! Following the implementation of this new policy last week we witness a decrease in the number of students out in the hallways during class time. Thanks for your support!

No hall passes during the first 10 minutes of class
No hall passes during the last 10 minutes of class

It would be great if you watched this short video clip with your student. The iReady diagnostic assessments are really important - they help us gauge/monitor student progress in the areas of ELA (Reading) and Math. In order to get valid data we really do need students to do their best!
iReady Assessment Student Video
Another thing we always tell students about this type of assessment is that it is very valuable to be able to demonstrate what they know on tests. This is important for us at Parkway - but it becomes increasingly important in high school. So... creating the habit, and building the skill, of focusing on doing your best on assessments is a really valuable area to develop as a student!
New Hall Pass Policy - Going Really Well!!!
Last week we started enforcing a new hall pass policy school wide. We have seen a dramatic increase in use/misuse of hall passes this year - and it adds up to students just being out of class too much! Following the implementation of this new policy last week we witness a decrease in the number of students out in the hallways during class time. Thanks for your support!
New Policy
No hall passes during the first 10 minutes of class
No hall passes during the last 10 minutes of class
No hall passes during the last 10 minutes of lunch
All students must have a hall pass when in the hallways

Last week students in 7th grade math were challenged to work with teammates to problem solve and share their mathematical understanding. The process of standing up, moving around the room, and engaging in math talk to kick off class really got the blooding flowing and minds percolating!
Last week the 6th grade students went to the local Lions, Tigers, and Bears facility. They learned all about the animals, of course. But, they also learned about how the owners/employees operate the business and the various careers/jobs that are needed to care for the animals. It was AWESOME!
Last week 8th grade science students were given a design challenge. The challenge was to create a car that can go down a steep ramp, as quickly as possible, and still protect an egg from a crash into a cinder block at the bottom of the ramp. It was hands on, deep thinking generating, collaborative, and FUN!

A Message from Parkway Counseling Team - No Schedule Changes
Hello Parents/Guardians,
With the next Trimester approaching, we wanted to inform you that Trimester long electives will be the only courses changing on your child's schedule. Their upcoming trimester electives have been scheduled since the start of the year. As stated earlier in the year, we do not make changes to rotating trimester long electives. Parkway's electives provide a variety of experiences and learning opportunities for students.
Please note that we will not be accepting any requests for schedule changes regarding teachers, classes and periods. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to a great start to Trimester 2!
Sincerely,
The Counseling Team
ESSPN Flag Football is an amazing experience for students at Parkway. This year we have almost 100 students participating! Students come to early practices three times a week before school and then play in tournaments against the 3 other Academies in LMVS - LMAAC, Spring Valley Academy, and STEAM Academy.
The main goals of ESSPN is just to have a great time and also learn a few athletic/teamwork skills to help prepare students for high school sports. At Parkway we are continuing to build a stronger connection with Grossmont High School, where many Parkway students are headed! Last week a handful of Parkway Girls Flag Football team members attended the Grossmont Girls Flag Football quarter final game. Parkway players got to go on the field after the game and meet a few of the coaches! It was a fun night!
Big thanks to all the ESS/ESSPN staff for making such a rewarding experience. happen for so many Parkway students!
Student-Led Parent Conferences Nov. 13 - 16
This year we will be holding student‐led Parent‐Teacher Conferences Nov. 13‐16. Research shows that
conferencing with your child’s teacher is more powerful and effective when students hold a critical stake in the
process. Therefore, your child must accompany you to your designated conference time.
Students should bring their Chromebooks and backpacks!
Your child will discuss with you:
● Work samples from the four core subject areas, as well as PE and electives.
● Reasons they earned academic/citizenship grades in each subject in Trimester 1.
● Their strengths and weaknesses in each subject area and goals for Trimester 2.
Please have your student bring materials (backpacks) and their Chromebooks to the conferences.
Your child’s teachers will help facilitate your student‐led conference, answer questions, and provide other
important feedback and information. We look forward to seeing you to discuss your child’s progress and
academic goals. If you can’t attend any of the in‐person days please reach out to your student’s teachers for
possible accommodations.
On Thursday, conference appointments are available between 1:30PM and 3:30PM by directly contacting your
student’s teachers. Additionally, conferences are available to everyone on Thursday evening from 5:00PM to

Last week Marine Biology students got to learn all about tide pool creatures. The absolute coolest part of the learning was a visit from Traveling Tide Pools - including a huge salt water tank packed with different types of crustaceans and sea life!
At first, some of the students were a bit trepidatious when sticking their hands in the frigid water in the salt water tank. But, before long everyone was touching and holding the hermit crabs, horseshoe crabs, sea urchins, and brittle stars. It was a fantastic experience.
It was great to have the tide pool come to us - but the Traveling Tide Pool teacher highly recommends families get out to the beautiful beaches of San Diego next time there is a low tide. There are some amazing tide pools at Ocean Beach, Sunset Cliffs, and La Jolla!

Horseplay in the Hallways & Lunch
Please help us by reminding your students that school is not a place for rough-housing or horseplay. We have to remind students about this at certain times in the year - and the last week or so we have seen an influx of this type of behavior. The majority of the time we understand it is typically friends messing around - but it is still very inappropriate behavior at a school campus. Pleae remind students to follow school rules!

Grossmont HS - Football Game
Last Thursday the Parkway Band was invited to play with the Grossmont High School Band at the Football Game. It was such a fun night. Students walked out with the Grossmont Band, played in the stands, got out on the field to accompany the drum line, and even got to sing Sweet Caroline on the field with the high school students! Such a great way to experience some of the fun stuff coming very soon for our middle school students. We are very much enjoying the growing/expanding partnership with Grossmont High School. Big thanks to our new Band/Music Teacher Mr. Tony Sacco for organizing the event!
The AMAZING Parkway Social Worker - Ms. Zulali - Put together this visual to remind us all about the importance of daily attendance. The graphic helps visualize/explain the difference between excused and unexcused absences. Research tells us that getting kids to school every single day is one of the MOST important ways to make sure students are learning and achieving at high levels!!!
Of course, we do not want students to come to school if they are sick or if some sort of family issue warrants missing school. However... Making sure that students are at school and on time as much as possible really does help them be better students and engaged learners.
If you ever need support or assistance, as it relates to attendance or the social/emotional well being of your student, please just reach out to Ms. Haleemah Zulali. We are here to support all students and families.
Dear Parents/Guardians,
This week is Red Ribbon Week at Parkway Academy, which is a national campaign to raise awareness and prevent substance abuse among youth (see more information here). We would like to encourage you to have educational and open conversations with your kids at home about the risks and consequences of drugs and alcohol.
Research shows that parents have a significant influence on their children's attitudes and behaviors regarding substance use. By talking to your kids early and often, you can help them develop healthy coping skills and create a plan for how to say no. You can also help them understand the legal, social, and health implications of using drugs and alcohol.
We understand that talking about these topics can be challenging and uncomfortable for some parents, so we have provided some resources for you to have these conversations at home.

Grossmont CTE Pathway Field Trip
Last week, students from Ms. Allen's Money Matters/Financial Literacy Elective Class visited the CTE Pathway Program at Grossmont High School. It was a fantastic feel trip with hands on learning, collaboration with high school students, and plenty of time to gain a view of all that is offered in high school - which is coming really soon for our Parkway students!
We have intentionally built many of Parkway Academy's new elective courses to directly connect with some of the amazing programs that will be offered when students attend GUHSD. Students got to visit classrooms dedicated to education, automative repair, engineering, sports medicine, and coding/computer programming. They also got to meet the Grossmont ASB and eat lunch with high school students.
In the future, we will do more field trips to Grossmont HS - as well as West Hills HS and Helix HS. The goal at Parkway is to create a very strong educational program that includes English, Math, History, Science, and PE - but also a wide array of elective experiences that help build awareness and enthusiasm for great opportunities in the future!
The stronger the bridge/transition we can create with our local high schools the better!
Red Ribbon Week - Oct. 23 - Oct. 27
Enrique (Kiki) Camarena was a Drug Enforcement Administration Agent who was killed in Mexico in 1985. When he decided to join the US Drug Enforcement Administration, his mother tried to talk him out of it. "I'm only one person", he told her, "but I want to make a difference.
In honor of Camarena's memory and his battle against illegal drugs, friends and neighbors began to wear red badges of satin. Parents, sick of the destruction of alcohol and other drugs, had begun forming coalitions. Some of these new coalitions took Camarena as their model and embraced his belief that one person can make a difference. These coalitions also adopted the symbol of Camarena's memory, the red ribbon.
Today, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. Since that time, the campaign has reached millions of U.S. children and families.

Parkway knows how to continue to have up to the last minute before fall break! It was fun to see the myriad of crazy socks donned by students last Friday. Next Friday will be 90s Dress Up Day! Let's end our last week of school before Fall Break with a bang!
The best part of our days is participating in the robust learning that our teachers have designed! These pics are moments caught in our science classrooms where design engineering and science intersect. Thinkers designed their own machines that would generate and harness power!
Our weeks at Parkway just get better and better! This week we ending the week on a high-note with our huge ESSPN even where LA Rams coaches held a gigantic field day for our flag football participants. This kick-off event could not have happened without the amazing support of our classified staff and ESS staff!
We are almost there, one more week until Fall Break!
We had a very exciting week last week (see the pics above) and look forward to a fun week before we all take off for Fall Break.
ASB continues to provide fun activities at lunch and this Friday will be 90's dress up day.
Fall Break Starts October 2nd!
Starting October 2nd - October 13th we have Fall Break. The first day back to school after our Fall Break is October 16th, Monday. We hope that this provides time for everyone to enjoy the fall weather and spend time with loved-ones. More information will be shared this week in regards to office hours during fall break.

After School Pick Up
Reuniting with your children after the school day can be the best part of your day. In order to keep this a safe and smooth process please designate a pick up spot with your child ahead of time, leave the parking lot free for our bus drivers to usher children on to the bus safely. Please do not stop in the roadways to pick-up - find a place to park so traffic can keep moving. The best places to park are out on Dallas St. - It is a simple walk down the hill for your student and then you don't have to sit in the traffic up near the school driveway.

If 5 or more detentions is accumulated, then it will be necessary for a student to attend after-school detention on Tuesdays from 2:30-3:30pm. There will also be an additional time students may serve detention, if behavior warrants more detention time after Tuesday, then students will have to attend on Fridays after school from 3:45- 4:45pm. The office staff is here to answer any further questions you may have after after school detention.

Just about every Friday a group of staff members take on students who reguralry attend morning basketball. It is just pure fun... and for us older guys a really good work out! If there are any parents/families members out there who want to play with us on Fridays - just come on out and join the fun!
Last week a group of Parkway Academy teachers attended the High Tech High Graduate School CARE Network Workshop. Here Mr. Sandoval is presenting about some of the student wellness work we have done the past few years to a room of teachers and leaders from all over San Diego County!
Morning Math Support started last week. Each week teachers are available on Tues. and Thurs. to help students with math assignments and/or mathematical understanding/learning. This is a great oppprtunity to make sure math assignments are completed. Buzz in the front gate and go to the math hallaway!
My name is Daniel Crook and I am very happy to serve as the new Assistant Principal. I am very excited to have started working at Parkway Academy this week, it was an exciting week filled with a lot of activities. I began my career as a math teacher and worked for 18 years as teacher, resource teacher, and administrator in the Sweetwater district in Chula Vista. I was honored to have the opportunity to come to Parkway and work in the community where my family and I live. My older son is in 8th grade here at Parkway and my younger son is in 5th grade and will join the Parkway family next year. I want to thank the students, staff, and community for the warm welcome, and I look forward to meeting more of you soon.
Daniel Crook, New Assistant Principal, 6th/8th Grade

We hope you had a tremendous weekend!
We are almost a month into the 2023-24 school year and things are going great at Parkway!
Students seem to be really enjoying school and all Parkway Academy has to offer!
Income Eligibility Forms Coming Home!
Mid-Trimester 1 - Time to Check Jupiter and Monitor Grades
This week is technically the mid-way point between the beginning of the year and the end of the first trimester!
To all parents and students... Now is the time to be checking Jupiter grades! Parents/families we recommend that you are checking Jupiter at least 1x per week to make sure students are keeping up with assignments and performing well on assessments. Jupiter is also the method we use to foster communication between parents/families and teachers. So, if you are finding that your student is struggling in a particular class, it is always a good idea to reach out to the teacher!
We have plenty of student support systems in place, including Weekly WIN Time and morning Math Support.
And... In a few weeks we will start doing a homework club on Tuesdays.
The more we work together to support academic achievement the better!

Bathroom Use at Parkway Academy
We are talking to students this week about appropriate bathroom use. The vast majority of students use the bathroom during passing periods and lunch time - and appropriately during class time. However, we do have a handful of students that seem to be using the bathroom too many times during the day and missing valuable class time.
This week campus attendants (who are at bathrooms all day) are going to monitor and be on the look out for students using the bathroom throughout the day 3 or more times during class time. With frequent passing periods, before school time, and lunch time - there really should be no reason students are out of class more than maybe 1 or 2 times during class. If we feel a student is misusing the bathroom this we will let you know. Please support us by talking to your student and reinforcing the idea that staying in class to learn is incredibly important.
Rules Review and School Expectations Presentation
The first full week of school, Ms. Chaniot covered important school rules, expectations, and procedures with all students.
It would tremendously helpful for families to go over the presentation/expectations with students at home.

Last week 8th grade students learned a new mini-revision strategy to improve their writing and to build the academic habit of revision. Big thanks to the San Diego Area Writing Project for leading a great Professional Development last week and for giving us great ideas!
ASB Twin Day: It was super fun to see all the TWIN DAY twins rocking their best twin day gear all day Friday! Big thanks to Parkway ASB for designing fun Friday dress up days each week! Next week is always a fun one - Hawaiian and Beach Wear Dress Up!!!

Make Up Picture Day - Sept. 11th
Breakfast & Lunch Cards
All school lunch and breakfast is still FREE for all students
However... We now are going to be scanning student lunch cards to track the meals being taken by students. We will be handing out scan cards to all students Tuesday, Sept. 5 during period 1 and explaining the process in detail. Students will now need to scan their card or memorize their ID number when they take a lunch/breakfast. We prefer the scan cards because they are quicker and help make lines move at an efficient pace.
For the time being, if a student loses a scan card - we can replace it.
However, at some point we will have to start charging for new scan cards.
We encourage students to find a pocket in backpacks to always place cards!

There are just so many wonderful things happening around Parkway everyday. Last week in 8th grade ELA students really dug into a short story by doing some text analysis that included reading, talking, collaborating, and thinking about concepts from The Monkey's Paw. The academic discussions and student interactions were lively! Students will now turn their thinking and conversations about the text into written pieces! So awesome!
Happy Labor Day
We hope you had a fantastic 3-day weekend!
Thanks for always reading the weekly messages. It is the main way we get out a lot of information to the community.
As we move past the first few weeks of school - please feel free to always reach out to Ms. Chaniot and myself if you need help with anything or just need to ask a few questions. As an admin. team we really do pride ourselves on being open to working directly with and supporting the community at all times!
Collaborative Conversations and Reading Informational Text
This year as a school we are focused on increasing the amount of student-student talk and the rigor/amount of text students are reading in class. If you walked around Parkway this year and went into classrooms, you would see/hear students having collaborative conversations, working on tasks together, and reading more text than ever! Ask your students about it - it is awesome!
ESSPN Flag Football
Jupiter/Blackboard messages went out with more detailed information!
Starting Tuesday, Sept. 5th - Students who want to play flag football need to pick-up and return a registration packet to the Parkway school office!
This year we have a girls Flag Football Team too - So please encourage your student to play!!!
Fun fact: The current Grossmont HS Girls Flag Football Team starting Quarterback got her start playing for the Parkway Flag Football team a few years ago. She helped Parkway win out first championship and she is now doing great in high school!!!

Dismissal Traffic
We all know the traffic after school can be a bit frustrating. Please do your best to drive with care and concern - and make sure to be a courteous driver. Please do not stop in the roadways or double park to pick up students. And... Please never park in the apartment parking lot.
The very best strategy for picking up students is selecting a spot somewhat out of the fray and having your student walk to you.
Ms. Chaniot and I are out there walking the block just about everyday - to ensure students are getting to cars and home safely!

We hope you had an amazing weekend!
It is suppose to be hot again this week. It is always a good idea to send students to school with a refillable water container. We have a really nice filtered water filling station that students have access to all day. Of course, PE teachers are aware of the weather and plan lessons accordingly.
As we move past the first few weeks of school - please feel free to always reach out to Ms. Chaniot and myself if you need help with anything or just need to ask a few questions. New PE Teacher - Mrs. Samantha Ferrari
Please join us in welcoming our new PE Teacher - Ms. Ferrari
Ms. Ferrari is coming to Parkway with a ton of relevant experience and an abundance of enthusiasm to get started. We have to thank Mrs. Carlson for starting the year and doing a great job as a guest teacher. But, we are very happy to have a new teacher out on the fields and the courts with our amazing Parkway students!

Mrs. Scheitlin is using a very cool and rigorous protocol during 6th grade ELA time. Students are thinking about what the text means and then why that meaning matters to the story or central idea of the text. Students read, write about their thinking, and talk about their thinking to classamates. Reading comprehension is incredibly important to continue to develop and refine in students as they move from upper elementary to middle school and beyond. Facilitating a students ability to think with/about text and be able to articulate the learning or understanding from that text is so important!
Media, Yearbook, and Computer Teacher, Mrs. Leichtamer came up with the idea of High Five Friday.
Basically - wear a funny glove and just give students high fives in the hallways!
Well... On Friday the idea spread to other teachers and staff! We were all out in the hallways giving high fives all day long! There were Spider Man gloves. Mickey gloves, boxing gloves, light-up gloves, and many more! The goal: Make students smile!
ALL LMSV SCHOOLS OPEN - MONDAY, AUGUST 21
Wild San Diego weather!
Most of us have lived in SD for all of our lives - and I am not sure we have ever seen anything like this before!
Stay safe out there!
If any emergency procedures impact school operations we will let you know immediately!
Goodbye Assistant Principal - Dr. Miller
We are very proud of our new AP Dr. Miller who will be leaving us to become a principal! Although the timing is a bit challenging at the beginning of the year, we are very happy for him and we know that the ultimate goal for assistant principals is to eventually lead schools at principals! Please join us in congratulating him and thanking him for the support he did offer - even for such a short period of time!
We are will be interviewing for new assistant principals this week!
New Music Teacher - Mr. Tony Sacco
Please join us in welcoming our new Music, Band, and Choir Teacher - Mr. Tony Sacco.
Mr. Sacco is coming to us with an amazing background and wealth of music teaching experience. One of the things that was immediately evident when meeting Tony is that he LOVES teaching music and he has exciting ideas. It is going to be great to see how he builds and expands our performing arts at Parkway!!!

Last week in 7th grade Science class students participated in a fun and deep thinking lab. Mr. Martin intentionally designed the lab experience to get students collaborating, problem solving, and thinking together as scientist saying things like, "Think through the steps with your partners first, only ask me if you really get stuck!"
Last week in 7th grade ELA class students participated in a fun and collaborative routine called LINK UP. In all classrooms at Parkway we are focused on increasing student-student talk and collaboration. The LINK UP routine is intentionally designed to facilitate a classroom culture where students talk and collaborate to learn!
Design and Modeling Class - Discussing Active Listening
It was an absolutely amazing start to another great school year at Parkway Academy! We have 6th grade students back on campus for the first time in over a decade. The 6th grade student energy and excitement and joy was so great to see as we kicked off the year! Also, teachers were on fire last week getting kids talking and moving and thinking together to build community and kick off the year!!!
So... Let's keep the positive-start-the-year momentum going all year long!!!
Here are some informative tips to keep us learning and growing together as a community of students, teachers, parents, and staff!

Welcome to the Parkway Periodical!
You've made it to the official parent & community newsletter for Parkway Health & Sciences Academy. We're glad you're here!
New Administrative and Counseling Staff
To kick things off, please help Parkway welcome some new staff members in the main office! First, our Assistant Principal, Ms. Lunde, has accepted a position at the district office and we wish her the best in her new endeavor. Parkway Academy now has TWICE the amount of Assistant Principal support and proudly introduces Ms. Marisa Chaniot and Dr. Joel Miller to the team as our TWO new full-time Assistant Principals. Overseeing 7th grade students, Ms. Chaniot hails from Chula Vista Elementary School District, where she was a teacher for over 18 years. Dr. Miller will oversee 8th graders, and also comes to us from Chula Vista--in Sweetwater District--where he was as a teacher and Assistant Principal before serving at STEAM Academy last school year. Both will oversee 6th grade students and we're thrilled to have them on the team! Also please help us welcome Ms. Katrina Tabor, joining us as a second counselor, which will DOUBLE the amount of counseling support our Parkwat students receive this school year. This new, significantly larger team of main office and administration staff will mean more support our students as they navigate middle school, helping to ensure our students are ready for the next step.
Wonderful Diversity of Amazing Electives
We will continue to offer academically rigorous, traditional curriculum in Language Arts, Math, History, Science and PE. However, this year we will be expanding the selection of elective courses focused on health, science and sports, and each student will continue to get two elective classes each trimester.
Additionally, conferences are available to everyone on Thursday evening from 5:00PM to
7:00PM. There are no conferences scheduled on Friday afternoon, 11/18.
Here is link to conference times and letter sent home to families...
Girls Flag Football - Tues. Dec. 5 - 2:00 @Grossmont High School Football Field
Come out to support the Parkway Academy Girls Flag Football Team. It has been a great season and we made it to the finals. The final game will be held at the Grossmont High School Football Field. The game is free and is sure to be fun! Hope you can all make it!
Morning Arrival
This is just a reminder that we highly encourage that students come directly into school when they are dropped off or walk to school. Gates open at 8:30 am and students should come in as soon as the gates open. Students should not be hanging around the park or the liquor store in the morning before school. Thanks for helping us make this happen!
Holiday Stress and Anxiety
The holidays are fantastic! But... We also see a rise in social emotional need during the holidays. If feel like you need support with your student - please do not hesitate to contact the Parkway Counseling and Social Work team. We are here to support you child and the community!
Jupiter and Student Grades
The four week period bewteen the Thanksgiving Break and the Winter Break is actually a very critical period for student academics. It is the start of Trimester 2 - and students who start to get behind, have a hard time catching back up after Winter Break. Now is the time to be talking to your students about their grades and checking Jupiter - at least a few times a week.
Here is a Cool & FREE Opportunity
Grossmont HS staff is always sending us great opportunities out in the community.
This one looks cool - Check it out!
New - School Rules and Expectations
Last week Mr. Crook, Ms. Chaniot, and Mr. Ruth went to all 8th Grade ELA classes to give a quick presentation on school rules and expectations. We typically do this every February or March as we approach Spring Break. It would be great if you review the presentation with your student - they can explain all the details and information we shared during the presentation.
Spring - Rules and School Expectations
New - Trimester II is Coming to an End
We basically have this week and next before teachers wrap up grades for Trimester II. Now is the time to make a final push to make sure assignments are turned in, make-ups are finished, and participation/behavior is on point. We strongly encourage parents/familis to check Jupiter at least 1x per. week. Teachers are very responsive if sent a message via Jupiter. Please take time to review Jupiter with your students this week!!!
Review - Family Support with Social Media & Phone Use
Social media use with middle school students is always something that should be monitored by families. The last several weeks we have seen an increase in students participating in group chats with incredibly negative language/content. To some degree, this is beyond our control and responsibility as a school, but when it impacts daily school operations, we do intervene and we also want to remind families to please support us with phone use/social media at home.
Here is a great resource for families...
Common Sense Media - Social Media
As parents/families it is important to foster independence in middle school. But, please also remember they are children who need guidance, support, and adult supervision so they can thrive as adolescents!
Review - Conflict and Physical Altercations at School - Expectations and Consequences Reminder
We have been sending reminders to all students about participating in physical altercations/conflicts. The following expectations and consequences are important to understand. We always want students to avoid any type of physical altercation and work with the staff that we have a Parkway to resolve any form of conflict/disagreement.
Please help us by reviewing the rules/consequences at home and supporting us at school.
Expectations & Consequences
It is the responsibility of students/families to work with school staff to solve conflicts/disagreements.
Participation in a physical altercation will most likely result in suspension and/or attendance in Diversion Program.
Participation in multiple physical altercations will most likely lead to expulsion from Parkway.
Instigation and/or unsafe involvement in a physical altercation will most likely lead to a serious consequence.
