Student Responsibilities
Students attend all scheduled meetings on their schedules. If meetings are missed, students are responsible to schedule make-up sessions or inquire when they are being held. Advisors design the meeting schedules based upon the timeline (see tab).
Students complete Assignments 1-9 and submit on time. Failure to submit assignments can result in a "Fail" for the project.
Students find their own mentors for the project (see below).
Support Roles
During the project, students work with the following individuals:
Faculty Advisors (assigned by the school).
Mentors (arranged by the students).
Parents/Guardians.
*Parents/Guardians cannot be mentors, but adult siblings or other relatives are allowed with approval from advisors and parents/guardians.
Faculty Advisor: The faculty advisor is a key figure in support of the senior during the project. The faculty advisor's role is to meet with the student and offer advice, guidance, and feedback on the development of the project through discussions based on the assignments. The advisor contacts parents/guardians and mentors by phone or email during the project- once before the placement period to confirm placement answer any questions, then during the placement to confirm the project has started or has proceeded as planned. The advisor will contact the parent and project coordinator as situations warrant. The advisor collects all assignments, evaluates them, and finalizes the "Pass" or "Fail" score based upon the project rubric (see tab).
Mentor: The senior will be expected to find a mentor for the experiential learning phase of the project. The mentor is a resource in a particular area of interest related to the student’s essential question, and will provide facilities or other support for the completion of the project. Being resourceful, independent, and inquisitive are traits measured by this project; therefore, it is required that seniors demonstrate the ability to identify a mentor and use specific skills developed during the project to ensure their acceptance of the project plan. Unlike the faculty advisor, who guides the senior in the construction of the project, the mentor guides the senior's learning. The mentor is asked to submit feedback that identifies the senior’s willingness to learn and a signed log sheet that verifies the 70 hours were completed.
Senior Project Coordinator: The senior project coordinator oversees the project, resolves issues or problems, and assists the faculty advisors with students, assignments, and presentation schedules.
Independence and Initiative
This project is intended to be a student-driven project. Students are required to meet deadlines, attend all meetings with their advisors, and complete the 70-hour experiential phase during the three-week period in May.
