書院中文經典南京遊學

On March 29th, fifteen students from the Chinese Classics program embarked on a six-day study tour to Nanjing, led by three teachers. The students visited the Nanjing Museum, the Six Dynasties Museum, and the Jiangning Weaving Museum, bringing the knowledge from their classroom to life. They also enjoyed the beauty of Xuanwu Lake, Mochou Lake, and the Honglou Art and Cultural Garden, indulging in the sights of spring while savoring local pastries. In the evening, everyone gathered at the Chaotian Palace to watch a Kunqu opera performance of "The Peony Pavilion," experiencing the charm of this traditional art form up close. The students were also invited to visit Nanjing University, where they had the rare opportunity to learn about the restoration of ancient books and the art of letterpress printing.

In summary, during this beautiful March, the students explored famous landmarks, enjoyed the beauty of spring, and not only visited historical and cultural sites but also immersed themselves in natural wonders. We believe that this journey to Nanjing will leave colorful memories in everyone's hearts.

Shuyuan Western Classics Trip to Athens, Greece!

February 2024

During the first week of Chinese New Year break, the Shuyuan Western Classics team took twenty one of our students from Grades 8-12 on an educational tour to Athens, "the city of the violet crown".

As one of the ancient cradles of western theatre, philosophy, and the arts, Athens contains many inspiring sites that help us to discover and understand the enduring legacy of Greek antiquity

During our six-day excursion, we visited the world famous Parthenon Temple atop the Acropolis and learned about its history and preservation. In the foothills of the city peak, we explored the ancient agora, where the vibrant life of the city once found its centre, before climbing the Hill of Muses for its evening views. We were intentional to walk the same paths that Socrates, Plato, Pericles, and Aristotle once walked. From Athens we branched out into the countryside, visiting the fortress-towns of Corinth, Mycenae, and Nafplion in turn. Along the way, we entered the ruins and saw the remnants of human art and ingenuity that spanned millennia.

Beyond the parks, museums, and panoramic views, students and teachers enjoyed the hearty meals and rich tastes of Greek cuisine thoroughly!

Plans are already being put in place for the Western Classics trip of 2025, which will be open to all students in Grades 8 and above who study either Latin, Greek or Comparative Classics.

Shuyuan Comparative Classics Presentations!

January 2024

Students in Grade 9 and Grade 10 Comparative Classics showcased their research findings in an engaging presentation held during the first week of January. The topics covered a wide range of artistic and archaeological subjects, including intriguing comparisons of mirrors, female dancing figurines, ancient toilets, and clothing. In the literature unit, students delved into captivating themes such as love, desire, homecoming, and the portrayal of abducted women in ancient texts. The culmination of their hard work and dedication will be displayed through captivating posters during the upcoming Shuyuan Research Week in May 2024. Congratulations to all the students involved for their exceptional achievements!

AC Generator Project (Grade 10 Mathematics for Engineering)

December 2023

Grade 10 Math for Engineering students completed their AC generator projects in December.  Students were asked to design and build a working scale model of a generator which harnesses wasted energy at the ISF academy to generate electricity.  Before building began, students needed to calculate the anticipated power generated by the generators using the concepts learned in previous weeks.
