The White House

by Roland Smith

Reviewer: Matthew Scheinmann

The White House starts out in The White House. This book is about teenage spies who are trying to stop terrorists and find Angela’s mom. Quest and Angela’s parents are famous musicians who are on a tour. Boone is a spy and is taking care of them while their parents are away. Q and Angela get caught up in terrorist attacks, spying, and more. They find out that Angela’s mom (before her dad married Quest’s mom) is actually alive and used to be a spy.

The author didn’t specifically say how the world is unpredictable, but I think he chose to write about spying and terrorists because it shows how unpredictable the world can be. The message of this book is also to know a person before you judge them, and that nothing is as it seems.

The main characters in this book are Q and Angela. They are step-brother and sister. Q is an amature magician, and is kind. He was friendly throughout the book, but as he spends day after day as a spy he changes a lot. At first he is friendly, then he becomes less trusting. Being friendly is one of his best traits, while one of his worst is not doing what he is supposed to. Angela is paranoid but nice to Q. They make a good team.

This book definitely holds my interest. There are no slow parts, and although there are cliffhangers it is very good and made me want to read more. I would recommend it to almost anyone. Whether they like action or complex characters spy novels this book will probably be interesting for them.

The Da Vinci Code

by: Dan Brown

Reviewer: Jazmine McAdams

This book so far is all about mystery. This man was killed and now everyone wants to know who did it. The night he was killed was also that he a had a very important meeting with a man known as Mr. Langdon. That meeting never happened for Sauniere had been murdered. When people found his body, it had been left in an obscure angle and had a message behind it. The message was to call for his granddaughter who came to find Mr. Langdon. At the moment the police think that Langdon killed him because Sauniere had left his name. The police though the was saying who killed him, but actually that was as message for his granddaughter to find Mr. Langdon. Now we wait to find out how the rest of the story will unfold.

I really like how this book is filled with mystery because it keeps you interested and wanting to read more so you can find out more about what is going on. The only thing i don't like about this book is that in the beginning it was very slow and took a little while to get into it. But now that I'm interested it has my full attention.

We Were Liars

by E. Lockhart

Reviewer: Summer Mc Knight

The book We Were Liars by E. Lockhart it is about Cady or Cadence Sinclair spending each summer on her grandparents private island along with her cousins (usually the young group of Sinclairs were known as The Liars). The book is based on a mysterious fire tragedy that happened two years ago. She survived, but was rushed to the hospital with burns all over her. At the end... Well there is a complete plot twist that I never saw coming in the book.

In the beginning I didn't really love the book BUT it wasn't boring. I'm more into murder mystery books right now, so that's probably why I wasn't totally interested in the book. Overall I do think it was a good book, I loved the plot twist at the end it totally surprised me because I had no clue that it was coming. The end complete changed the book. I do recommend this even if it is a little boring at first, the end is a complete game changer!

We Are Okay

by Nina Lacour

Reviewer: Hayden Chin

The book I read was "We Are Okay" by Nina Lacour. The book was about a girl named Marin who's grandpa died and she felt sorrow. Towards the end she realized she needed her friend to tell her everything is going to be okay. Her friend's name is Mabel. One day when they were talking Marin told Mabel about how she felt about her grandpa dying and Mabel listened to her. Mabel hugged Marin and told her she was going to be ok.

I liked how Mabel was able to help Marin feel better. I didn't like how long it took just to read the part where Mabel comforted Marin. Marin pretended to be happy in front of Mabel because she didn't want Mabel to see how sad she was. It seemed like Marin was so sad she drank just to numb out the sadness. Marin didn't even like the taste of it.

Galactic Hot Dogs

By Max Brallier

Reviewer: Henry Fenster

The book Galactic Hot Dogs is a great book. The book contains of action and some humor. This book takes place in space through many planets in a galaxy far, far away just like star wars. But this book is no where near like star wars. This book about a boy who has a power that is similar to green lantern. Has the power to shape shift and do things with his indestructible little buddy/ hand. In this book him, his friend who is kinda like a space giant and a princess who joined there team in the last Book ( it is the other book which has a yellowish cover and not blue like the one I am reading.) Take on the adventure of the circus.

In this book the three characters start out with having lots of fun and playing a space version of like a home run derby. But this takes a short cut to a turn that could of gone bad. But it wasn't Cosmoe hit a crazily far shot but it ended up hitting a space bandit who if this slightest things happen he will freak out and try to kill you. But they got lucky and the space bandit didn't try to kill him. Then the circus came into town. Cosmoe hates the circus a lot. But the princess and the space giant loves it. He said whatever to it and they went to it. Cosmoe's mood swung like a swing real fast and quickly he started liking the circus. But soon after a sand storm and this crazy beast came out and they all started panicking, Cosmoe wistled and then they ran for their life. This book is filled with action but the comedy doesn't come until later in the book. ( I stopped my reading at that point.)

Every Last Word

by Tamara Ireland Stone

Reviewer: Natalie Ogando

Every Last Word is a book by Tamara Ireland Stone about a girl named Samantha, Sam for short, who has OCD. In the book the reader gets to learn about how her OCD affects her actions and thoughts. For example, she likes to do stuff like pressing buttons in threes. The reader also gets to learn about how her OCD affects her relationships with friends. Sam doesn’t feel comfortable with telling other people about her OCD until she meets Caroline. Right away she tells Caroline about her OCD and Caroline introduces her to a writing club where she is starting to feel more normal than she does with her other friends.

Some stuff I like about this book is that the author goes into a lot of detail about how Sam is feeling and how her OCD affects her life. It allows you to understand how Sam’s OCD affects her life whether it's her actions or her thoughts. I also like how the characters feel realistic. Sometimes books will have over-exaggerated teenage characters and make them either really mean or really nice to the point where the characters feel very fake. I think the majority of the characters in the book act realistically and their actions don’t seem exaggerated or fake.

I would recommend this book because I think the characters are well thought out and the book is really interesting. I personally like books that deal with topics like mental illness since I think you can really understand the main character in those books. Since the author wants you to know how their mental illness might affect their life in different ways their actions and thoughts are usually very detailed and allow you to understand the character better which I think makes the book interesting.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More

By: Roald Dahl

Review by Daisy Lee

Henry Sugar and 6 more is by Roald Dahl. There are 7 different stories in this 1 book. There are stories of fiction and non-fiction. Of Hitchhikers, of discoveries of how he became an author but the most interesting (in my opinion) is the stories about Henry Sugar. It is about this man, Henry Sugar, who is a rich man in his 30's that has never worked for money. He got the money from his parents. So, one day he is at one of his rich friends' houses and there he looks at the books and finds a book called "The Man Who Can See Without His Eyes" and this caught his interest. There he starts reading. Skipping ahead, the book shows how the man can see without his eyes. And once Henry is done reading he tries this out.

Henry is very lucky because he can train this very quickly. He is able to see without his eyes and well as seeing through things. He goes to a casino and he wins 6,000 dollars because he can see his cards without looking, which of course is not allowed. He does not want this money. So, he throws it out his window. People start a crowd because money is just flying. The police show up and have to tell him to stop and that he is blocking up the road. The cops says he could donate his money to a orphanage. This gives Henry Sugar an idea. He spends the rest of his like setting up orphanages around the world.

This is a good book for people that like action but also like understanding the story.

The Man in the Brown Suit

by: Agatha Christie

Reviewer: Allegra Advincula

The Man in the Brown Suit by award-winning author Agatha Christie is a mystery novel narrated by a young girl named Anne. Anne's father dies suddenly from illness, and Anne gets thrust into the real world with a new chance at having her dream experience. Being a fan of mysteries herself, Anne finds herself looking for an adventure when she stumbles upon a man throwing himself onto the train tracks. A man in a brown suit rushes to the man's side, claiming to be a doctor but is too late. The man is already dead. A few hours later, a woman gets murdered by a stranger. We later learn that the man in the brown suit was spotted at the murder scene. A search for the man in the brown suit is the new hot topic, and Anne decides to dedicate herself to finding the man in the brown suit. Anne finds her first clue with no time to waste, which leads to a boat called the Kilmorden Castle. Anne finds herself investigating several suspects and gets into a tight situation. Anne also befriends a woman named Suzanne Blair. Together Suzanne and Anne try to solve the mystery. Throughout the book, time flies as Anne finds the man in the brown suit, gets strangled, escapes from kidnappers, and finds million dollar diamonds. Read to find out who's the murderer and who's a friend.

I recommend this book to anyone that likes a thought-provoking mystery. Agatha Christie has a way of using advanced words that make the story more detailed and exciting. The Man in the Brown Suit keeps you at the edge of your seat as you pray for Anne's safety and welfare, bite your nails in anticipation when Anne turns down the wrong path or gets caught by someone you don't want to meet. Read into the night as you become engrossed in every word that turns into a sentence and every sentence that grows to be a paragraph.

Thank you for reading this, and I hope you enjoy any Agatha Christie book you decide to read!!

The Tower Of Nero

By Rick Riordan

Review by Kiroto Middleton, 804

Lester, comes to his home in the clouds called Olympus. He confronts his father, the God of Lightning and Thunder, asking for his mercy after is exile onto Earth. He is rejected until he finishes his task, dead or alive. This is an important part in the book because it shows the importance of what Lester has to do as a human, but at the same time is learning from the things that humans experience, such as their feelings, their strengths, their interests as well as their flaws.

This is an amazing book so far, because it takes every moment from more than a dozen books that came before it, and it puts it all together like a satisfying puzzle. It resembles the troubles, the victories, the losses and important moments in every character introduced. This book truly shows that the development of a character is never finished, and that small problems come long ways. It is the story of the many stories in the entire series that takes the most effect on every character, and every reader.

The Bridge

by Bill Konigsberg

Review by Eleanor Kaminski, 801

The Bridge, by Bill Konisberg is a very sad book that shows you how much your actions can impact someones feelings. The book is about Aaron Boroff and Tillie Stanley, two teenagers who have been having suicidal thoughts. They both arrive at the George Washington bridge at the same time. The book is split into four scenerios. What would have happened if Aaron jumped, Tillie jumped, neither of them jumped, or they both did. Each perspective teaches you how little kind or unkind actions from others can make you feel, and the positive or deeply negative affect it can have.

Something that I liked about the book, is the lesson that it teaches. No matter how bad you are feeling, you can always get help, and if you are feeling good, it's always good to be kind and have empathy, because you never know the impact you will have on somebody. I recommend this book to mature readers that like sad stories. Each chapter makes you more engaged in the book, and it makes you want to keep reading. Overall, this is a really good book, and I strongly recommend it

Space Dumplings

by Craig Thompson

Review by George Eisenman, 801

This week I read a graphic novel called Space Dumplings by Craig Thomspon. It is based in outerspace, the main character's name is Violet, she lives with her mom and dad in a trailer park. After Violet's school is destroyed the family goes on a search for school options, none of which fit, except for one which due to her father's record, Violet is not accepted too. The book is about the adventures Violet does while her parents try to figure out what to do for her school.

I did like this book. I liked it because I thought it was a very unique book. The story and illustration was very well done and it is a very entertaining book to read. It is also a pretty long and packed graphic novel so it lasts longer than like 30 minutes. It is also partially about social class and how much wealth can effect your life and the people in it. So I think it sends out a good message.

Magnus Chase: Ship of the Dead

by Rick Riordan

Review by Bryan Jiang, 802

Before you read my awesome book review about the third book of Magnus Chase you should learn more about the main characters! Magnus is a demi-god who is homeless after his mother died, being killed by wolves, his goal is to find his mother on his journey as a demi-god. Sam is a girl who believes in god(who has a religion) and who is a special Valkyrie serving Odin. Alex is a half-brother of Sam's. He is gender-neutral, switching from one gender to another depending on its mood(some exciting shipping in this book!). Last but not least, the two helpers of Magnus Chase, Blitz, the elf, Hearthstone, the dwarf. Blitz is a dark elf who can't stand the sunlight, also a fashion expert, who helps out Magnus. Hearthstone is an elf who has an abusing dad, he helps out Magnus with his amazing magic stone skills. That’s it, so let’s head on to the next part!

This book is mainly about a group of dead demi-gods and how they help each other to eliminate the evil. So this book starts off with Percy Jackson, Annabeth, and Magnus Chase. Percy is training Magnus in order for him to be the expert of the sea/ocean. He needs it because he has to take a boat trip to where he has to fight Loki, the one who is going to start Ragnorack, the biggest war on Asgard, and their goal is to stop Loki from starting a war by setting off with the Ship of the Dead. So their goal is to find/get ways to stop Loki. They get on this Viking ship and stop by many destinations to achieve the things they need in order to defeat Loki in flying(you will learn what this means if you read this book). Also, a little about the group of dead-demigods, the demigods include the main character, and Magnus’ hallmates, TJ a dead soldier that fought in the Revolutionary War, Mallory a sword thrower who dies, saving a car from exploding and end up not stopping it. Also, Halfborn, a man and boyfriend of Mallory’s, he is specialized in using dual axes. The last hallmate also includes Alex Fierro.

Will Loki be defeated? Will Ragnorak start? You got to read the book to find out! Don’t expect me to tell you, this is a book review! Magnus Chase: Ship of the Dead is an awesome book that shows amazing cooperation and teamwork, and how many people help each other out to achieve their goals. I highly recommend this book to people who like romance, action, mythology, and that people who are interested in Percy Jackson could also fall in love with this book, too. HAVE FUN READING!

Pandora Gets Jealous

by Carolyn Hennesy

Review by Jessica Gao, 802

So "Pandora Gets Jealous" by Carolyn Hennesy is about a girl named Pandora Atheneus Andromaeche Helena[just call her pandora or pandy].She basically has a school project and is worried about failing and not knowning what to bring in for the project. She wants to make a impression on her class since she isn't seen as a popular person, people see her as a idiot or a weirdo. She finds a box and thinks it would be good for her project and takes it to school for her project. Lets just say things don't end up well for pandy and greece.

I would recommend this book to anybody who likes books about "action" or myths since it takes place in greece. Heres' a line from the Prologue "there was a time, during the golden age of men and gods, where mankind became forgetful ,almost to the point of its own destruction." Also here's a another line from page 73 "and then in the middle of their foreheads ,both girls begin to grow wide ,curving, black horns." What i liked about this book was how they took myths and modern stuff and just mix it into one. So far there's nothing I really dislike!

The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy

By Douglas Adams

Reviewed by Scarlett Flamm, 801

The Hitch-Hiker's guide to the galaxy is a book that is not a small commitment. It's confusing and very detailed, but moments like a sperm whale suddenly appearing in the galaxy and crashing down to the planet Magrathea with a "sudden wet thud" are what make this book worth reading. The book is very strange and doesn't explain itself very often, but the descriptive language and the humor carry the story very well.

The book centers around four main characters. One is a regular human Englishman who has ended up in quite an unusual circumstance. The second is his close friend, Ford Prefect, who merely seconds before the Earth is destroyed decides to let Arthur know that he is not, in fact, a human and is actually from a faraway planet called Beatlegeuse 5. The third and fourth are Zaphod Beeblebrox, the two headed, three armed President of the Galaxy, and Trillian, his mysterious friend.

In the book, Arthur and Ford are desperately trying to stay alive while Arthur discovers everything he can about the galaxy. They meet all sorts of aliens and run into all sorts of problems and high jinks.

I like this book because it's very weird and super interesting. I don't think that the book is for everyone, because sometimes it's hard to understand and is definitely a book above level Z. I would recommend it to people who love science fiction and stuff about space.

Roberto and Me

by Dan Gutman

Reviewed by Jack McGrath, 801

In the book Roberto and Me by Dan Gutman, a boy named Joe Stoshack has a power to travel through time with a baseball card. The card will bring him back to the year on the card and have him be in that time until he uses a card to get back to the current date. In this book he is going on another rescue mission to save Roberto Clemente.

At the beginning of this book, Joe learns about Roberto Clemente and how he died in a plane crash on the way to Nicaragua trying to bring them food and supplies so they can live. Joe decided that he wants to go back in time in order to try to save Clemente. Joe finds a 1969 baseball card (three years before Clementes’s death) and travels in time to find him. When he comes to be in 1969, he meets a 14 year old girl named Sunrise who ran away from home. Joe tells her that he needs to find a way to get to Crosley field where Clemente is playing. So Sunrise suggests hitchhiking, almost 5 minutes in, they found two people who are very nice and agree to take them. While in the car, Joe tells them that he is from the future. At first, they do not believe Joe, but eventually they realize he has baseball cards and 21st century technology. After the long car ride to Cincinnati, Sunrise and Joe go to the baseball game. After the game, they wait outside the tunnel where clemente is going to come out, because there are so many people, everyone is pushing and Joe ends up in a fight with a 20 year old man. After Joe loses this fight, somebody yells that the Reds are going out the tunnel on the other side of the stadium and everyone runs. Feeling bad Joe and Sunrise give up on Clemente begin to leave. On their way out they hear Clemente calling them and they turn round and he is there alone. Clemente offers them dinner and they all go together. At the dinner place, Joe tells Clemente not to get on the plane in 1972. Clemente says that those people need food and that he would sacrifice his life to save thousands of others. After much convincing from Joe, Clemente agrees not to get on the plane. Joe bids goodbye to Sunrise and thanks her for her help and returns to his time. The first thing he does is asks his mom about Robert Clemente and she says that he still dies in a plane crash. However Joe partially expected this from what Clemente said, and Joe knew Clemente was a hero.

After reading this book, I really liked it. My favorite part of it were the descriptions about Roberto Clemente and how he was a great person. Another thing I enjoyed was Joe describing the way that Clemente played and how he was a great player.

When March Went Mad

by Seth Davis

Reviewed by Julian Krause, 802

My book "When March Went Mad" by Seth Davis is about the lives of two people named Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. They both were very high recruits to make the NBA in the 70's. They are now both NBA hall of famers. In the 70's Larry bird was playing in college for Indiana State University and Magic Johnson was playing for Michigan State University. In the regular season the Indiana State Sycamores were 33-0 and were ranked 1 in the country. But Michigan State was struggling a bit in the beginning of the season but ending of the year with a crazy win streak that kept them alive and helped them barely make the NCAA tournament. They both got past several rounds before playing each other in the NCAA championship. That season Larry Bird was putting up crazy numbers like 40 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds! So the Michigan State Spartans and Magic johnson needed to come up with a plan to stop Larry Bird from having that good of a game. To their plan was to double team him and trap him and let the other people on the team score. In the end that worked out because Michigan State came out on top with a 10 point margin victory.

The Reinvention of Moxie Roosevelt

by Elizabeth Cody

Review by Shien Chu, 802

I liked this book because I have experienced a somewhat similar thing as the main character in this book although the reason is different. This book is called, "The Reinvention of Moxie Roosevelt" by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel. This book is about a girl named Moxie Roosevelt who believes that she shouldn't deserve this name because she thinks that she just doesn't act like a "Moxie". She has experienced people having a disappointed reaction to her when they find out what her name is because her personality just doesn't seem to match her name. Then she goes to an all girls school and since none of her school mates she knew went there, she decided to become a totally new person with a whole new personality. At school, she switches between personalities based on the person to test them out. She kept something called a personality log and recorded the type of personality she used that day and what she did with it. Although none of her new friends found out about this, a few things happened.

I like this book because I can relate to her in a way. For me, instead of trying new personalities to fit in with my name, I try to be more brave and optimistic. Both me and Moxie are trying to become a new person and it's pretty hard to keep up with it. I also like this book because the main character, Moxie, can get into some really awkward situations and she would blurt things out which was a little funny sometimes.

Ugly

by Robert Hoge

Review by Vicky Sun, 802

In the book "Ugly" by Robert Hoge is a biography of a man who was born with deformed legs and a giant tumor in between his eyes. This book influenced many people to share his story because it proves how appearance doesn't matter. Robert went through multiple complicated surgeries and survived through the hard times. He was the youngest sibling in his family and his mom had four “healthy” kids before he arrived. His legs were deformed so the solution to that was getting artificial legs. Although he had complications with his legs, he still continued to do things that a usual kid would do. On the other hand, he also had a big tumor which made his face deformed by having his nose squished and his eyes pushed to one side of his head. He continues to share his life with having disabilities and how his disabilities affect him as a person.

I would recommend this book to anyone because it teaches you about what your appearance means and how different everyone’s life story can be. Robert is different from others because he looks different and has a disability which is having a cripple leg. Cripple means that you have legs but you can’t walk in them and that relates to Robert because he also has legs but has artificial legs because he was born with cripple legs. He really shows how his appearance won’t stop him from doing things that he wants to do. His story of his life is very unique because he showed how he can achieve tasks even having complications. Everyone will always be different and each story can be special.
