Middle School Gifted and Talented Music Program Application Packet
2026-2027
Dear Parent,
This letter is to inform you that Livingston Public Schools offers a Gifted and Talented Music Program for middle school students. The Middle School Gifted and Talented Music Program is designed to give students who qualify for admission the opportunity to participate in compositional and improvisational experiences in music.
Students who apply for this program must undergo a rigorous and highly selective screening process. Students who are selected for this program are expected to keep up with their regular schoolwork, in addition to completing assignments and projects that are a part of this program. Students will also be expected to complete weekly homework assignments as part of this program.
STUDENTS ALREADY ENROLLED IN THE PROGRAM DO NOT NEED TO RE-APPPLY.
Please be advised that instruction in GT Art and GT Music meets before school, once a week. Parents of students accepted into the program will be provided with a schedule and additional details from their Music Teacher in October.
Parents will be responsible for transportation for their students to this before school program.
Students who are identified as being gifted in Music typically exhibit several or all of the following characteristics:
1. The student demonstrates a strong interest in music theory and understands note and rhythm reading.
2. The student creates original rhythmic and/or melodic patterns.
3. The student creates original songs and lyrics and understands the importance of learning the craft.
4. The student is reflective, self-aware and expresses feelings and emotions through music.
5. The student demonstrates a strong interest in interpreting and analyzing music.
If you have a child who exhibits several or all of these characteristics and would like them to be considered for the GT Music program, please read and review each tab at the top of this web page.
All completed applications must be received no later than Friday, September 25, 2026.
A Music Teacher will email you regarding the in-person test, which will occur the week of October 5, 2026.
Sincerely,
Mara Rubin
