Sony, who most people know as Sony Interactive Entertainment, most known for the Playstation video game consoles, has reportedly been a target for a ransomware attack once again. Ransomed.vc, a group that just started this month (September 2023), claimed that they “have successfully compromised all of sony systems.”
“We wont ransom them! (Sony) we will sell the data. due to sony not wanting to pay. DATA IS FOR SALE.” Ransomed.vc said, “WE ARE SELLING IT”.
Ransomware is a malware that both prevents access to your computer, and encrypts, or turns data into secret code, most if not all of your files. The attackers then demand a ransom to give your files back. They can easily delete, sell, or steal your files as you no longer have access to them.
Nothing has been confirmed yet, from if Sony is really compromised, to if they are and if it will affect Playstation users. Sony has yet to make a statement, however they recently launched an investigation into the possible attack.
There have been multiple occasions where Sony was the target for cyber attacks. Sony Pictures, a subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation, was hacked on November 24, 2014 by the ‘Guardians of Peace’ group possibly due to the movie The Interview (2014), a movie starring Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg where they play as journalists who assassinate Kim Jong Un. U.S government officials believed that the North Korean government had some sort of role in the attacks.
In 2011, one of the largest cyber attacks took place when Playstation Network, the online service of Playstation, was hacked by hacktivist group Anonymous. 77 million accounts were compromised, and the Playstation Network was down for 24 days in the United States, but Japan players waited an extra 52 days for services to be functional. This attack was a response to Sony taking legal action against two Playstation 3 hackers who managed to bypass the anti-piracy measures.
While ransomware attacks are scary as it can affect anyone, all we can do is wait for an official statement from Sony.
Update: As of October 3, 2023, nothing has come out of the alleged ransomware attack.
