Earlier this week, Apple confirmed an error that severely impacts the NFC chip in the iPhone 15 lineup. When using the wireless chargers found in recent BMW or Toyota Supra models, it has the possibility of completely frying the NFC chip for reasons unknown. An internal memo was sent to Apple Authorized Service Providers confirming this issue, which are companies that offer in or out of warranty Apple product repairs such as Best Buy. While it is fixable either via software or hardware repairs, it is still a major issue, sometimes prompting replacements.
Other issues have been reported such as iPhones being stuck in recovery mode, or displaying a white screen.
NFC, or Near Field Communication, is a form of sending or retrieving information wirelessly. It requires at least 4 centimeters to make a connection. The most popular use of NFC is making payments via Apple Pay or Google Pay, but it can also be used as car keys, business cards, and was even found in Nike jerseys in 2017 to show team scores.
While this is a severe issue, Apple also said that it can be fixed in a future software update, so iPhone 15 owners don’t need to get an entirely new phone with a revised chip. It has not been confirmed if it affects earlier models with NFC capabilities. As of now, the only way to prevent this is by not using the wireless charger at all, or not buying a recent BMW or Supra model. Or simply don’t buy an iPhone 15/Pro/Plus/Pro Max.
