What exactly is the Student Assistance Program?

The SAP office provides a full range of support to help all students learn skills for communication, decision-making, stress management, and problem-solving to navigate challenges so they are best able to learn, in addition to substance use prevention and early intervention services using evidence-guided best practices. By participating in the SAP, students are able to learn more about their particular circumstances and develop healthier coping skills.  Participation is either voluntary or made by referrals.

Student Assistance Counselors maintain regular contact with local parent groups, community organizations, and other substance misuse prevention programs to ensure all identified needs are being met.

Meet Your Student Assistance Counselors!

Services can include:

Prevention Education – Students will receive mini-lessons on a range of prevention topics during Health and other relevant classes.

Individual and/or Small Group Sessions – Students will have the opportunity to receive support either individually or as part of a topic-specific group. Meeting times are carefully planned so as not to conflict with academic responsibilities.

Parent/Guardian Education – Parents/guardians will receive information and opportunities for involvement to stay informed and be active community supports for their students.

Referrals – Students who would benefit from more intensive services may be referred to various school- and community-based supports.

School-wide Awareness and Prevention Activities – The entire student body will participate in monthly activities focused on problem-solving, choices, and building coping skills. This can include bulletin boards, lunch tables, assemblies, games/trivia, and morning announcements.

SAP Wants YOU!

As parents/guardians, it can be tough to navigate the constant changes of adolescence.  What is typical teenage development? When should you be concerned? Your Student Assistance Counselors want to be partners with you during this complex and amazing time. Please be on the lookout for SAP information in the Crusaders’ Counseling Connection sent home monthly through the School Counseling Department. We will also share student activities and opportunities for parent/guardian involvement through this page, via email, and on the school’s Facebook page.

Confidentiality and the Student Assistance Program

Confidentiality is the cornerstone of the SAP.  Contact with the Student Assistance Counselor is confidential and protected under State law (R.S.A 318-B12-A) and Federal Laws (42C.F.R. Part 2), unless the student signs a consent form. The only exceptions to these laws are cases of suicidal or homicidal behaviors, as well as cases of abuse or neglect. Students are strongly encouraged to discuss with their parents/guardians their contact with the SAP.
