LMS 8th Grade Science Syllabus 2020-2021

Week of June 14-18, 2021

This week, students are taking the science MCAS test on Tuesday. We will be learning about the changes in life on Earth over the last 4.5 billion years and about natural selection, the mechanism that causes these changes.

After school extra help: I am available for after school help on Tuesday from 1:45 until 2:30.

This week, we only have four days of school, and students are taking the ELA and math MCAS test on Tuesday and Thursday. On Wednesday, we will be finishing up with frog evolution and on Friday, we will explore the concept of Deep Time.

Week of May 24-28, 2021

This week, we are moving on to study evolution by first focusing on adaptations. We are fortunate to have a set of frog models from the Harvard Museum of Natural History. These models were 3D printed from their specimen collection. There are also online interactive 3D models.

Week of May 17-21, 2021

We are finishing our study of genetics this week with a focus on mutations, genetic engineering, and a brief look at the interplay between genetic inheritance and environmental factors.

Week of May 10-14, 2021

This week, we will explore the genetic code, create models of DNA, and use them to demonstrate how the DNA code is transcribed by mRNA and translated by tRNA to form proteins. On Friday, we have a special guest speaker, Dr. Mathew Pletcher, a geneticist!

After school extra help: I am available for after school help on Tuesday from 1:45 until 2:30.

Week of May 3-7, 2021

This week, we will study regular cell division (mitosis) and the cell cycle and learn about meiosis, a special type of cell division that creates gametes. We will extract DNA from cheek cells on Friday!

This week, we will finish with Geniventure and will start to explore the role of chromosomes in inheritance.

Week of April 5-9, 2021

This week, we are using several computer models to explore the basic genetic patterns first discovered by Gregor Mendel. Students will breed mice and then will start Geniventure, a fun computer-based learning game that we have used in 8th grade science for the last three years.

After school extra help: I am available for after school help on Tuesday from 1:45 until 2:30.

On Monday, students will start a "one-pager" assessment for the reproduction unit. For the rest of the week, we will be focusing on the science and engineering fair.

This week, we are learning about animal behaviors that help to ensure successful reproduction. Students will also learn how to complete the data analysis for their science and engineering fair project.

This week, we are learning about plant strategies for successful reproduction. These strategies include asexual and sexual reproduction.

This week, we are finishing up our study of climate change by summarizing the evidence for climate change, looking at the projections for the effects of climate change, and most importantly, discussing what must be done to "fix" climate change.

This week, we are continuing our study of climate change by examining the evidence for anthropomorphic (human-caused) climate change.

On Wednesday, we will go over how and when to start the science and engineering fair projects. Students will create a data table and will use a planning calendar to develop a schedule for completing their project.

After school extra help: Students can email me for an appointment after school on Tuesday, 2/2.

Homework for week of 2/1-2/5:

Due by Monday 2/1: 2nd draft of the SEF project proposal (for grading)--students should just turn in their edited draft on Google Classroom.

Due by Friday 2/5: On Newsela, students choose TWO articles to read carefully and take a quiz. To get credit, they need to spend enough time to read the article and score at least 60% on the quiz.

NEXT Friday 2/12: Quiz on climate change

Week of January 25-29, 2021

This week, we are continuing our study of climate change by learning about the greenhouse effect and greenhouse gases.

On Wednesday, students will edit and revise their science and engineering fair project proposal.

Guided inquiry "kits" for the science and engineering fair will be sent home with cohort A on Monday-Tuesday and with cohort B on Thursday-Friday. Fully remote students will pick up their kits on Wednesday, 1/27.

This week, we are continuing to write science and engineering fair (SEF) research papers and will start drafting the project proposal for the project.

It is important that students keep up with daily classwork and dedicate some homework time to working on their papers. It is equally important that they contact me with questions or for extra help before they get too far behind.

After school extra help: Students should email me for an appointment after school on Tuesday, 1/12 or Thursday, 1/14. I will set up a Google Meet.

Homework for week of 1/11-1/15: Continue writing the first draft of the SEF research paper. It is recommended that students dedicate at least two or three days after school to writing, editing, and polishing. By Tuesday, 1/19, the first draft of the research paper should be turned in. A complete paper includes an introduction, three body paragraphs (with parenthetical citations and works cited), a conclusion, and works cited.

Due by F 1/15: (Optional) Quiz corrections on the What is the effect of oceans on climate? quiz.

Week of January 4-8, 2021

This week, we are conducting research for the science and engineering fair (SEF) research papers.

Homework for T 1/5 and W 1/6: Continue SEF research--enough information for three body paragraphs is needed by Thursday 1/7.
