Reading should be aloud to an adult for 10 minutes, 5 times a week, alongside discussing the text as you read to help with understanding.
A Blended Approach to Recording Reading
From September 2025, we will be introducing a new way of recording reading for all children as part of a broader initiative to promote and celebrate reading across school and home. Each child will have a Reading Bookshelf — a simple and engaging way to log the books they read, both in school and at home. This will be stuck into their Spelling Books and used as a tool to support discussions around reading habits, preferences and progress in the classroom.
Additional Support for Some Pupils
As part of our inclusive approach and commitment to adaptive teaching, some children will continue to use a traditional Reading Record alongside the new Reading Bookshelf. This includes children receiving additional support through the SEND register or Pupil Premium Grant (PPG), or those for whom we feel a more focused approach to reading will be especially beneficial.
This will allow us to monitor and support progress more closely and work in partnership with families to reinforce key reading habits. If this applies to your child, you will be informed individually
If you strongly feel that your child would benefit from having a reading record, please contact your class teacher and this can be arranged..
Please see the parent and child workshop page for support with reading at home (Taken from the parent workshop in July).
