September 2024:
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Year 5!
We have had a really positive start to the year with your children and we are looking forward to building relationships and supporting them with their learning in the coming weeks and months. It is through working closely together with parents and carers that we aim to best prepare your children for the next stage in their learning journey at Little Green by giving them an enjoyable and educationally enriching year of learning.
We are delighted with how brilliantly all of Year 5 have adapted to their new learning space and they already feel like home.
If you have any queries about anything mentioned on this website, or if you need to see us concerning other issues, we are happy to talk with you at a mutually convenient time; please do use the class email account (listed below) to contact teachers about specific classroom issues. As per the email guidance sent out recently, we aim to reply to all emails within 3-5 working days.
5H - Miss Reile - hippo2026@littlegreen.herts.sch.uk
5E - Mrs. MacKintosh - elephant2026@littlegreen.herts.sch.uk
5R - Miss McDonagh - rhino2026@littlegreen.herts.sch.uk
PE and Games days are as follows:
5H Miss Reile’s Class Tuesday and Thursday
5E Mrs MacKintosh’s Class Tuesday and Wednesday
5R Miss McDonagh Class Tuesday and Friday
We remind you that children should come to school wearing their PE kit. This is: black shorts, a green “Little Green” printed PE t-shirt, a school sweatshirt, sports (not fashion) trainers. In addition, during cold/wetter weather, please ensure your child also has plain dark jogging bottoms, a spare sweatshirt and a lightweight waterproof jacket to ensure they can take part in lessons safely.
We must stress however that a pair of old trainers and/or Wellington Boots should be in school every day as we hope to include exciting outdoor curriculum opportunities that require physical activity including the Daily Mile.
Reading books and Library books
Each week, every class has a chance to visit the Library and borrow books. They can return and take out books on the following days:
5H - Wednesday
5E -
5R - Tuesday
Every child will also have a spine book to read at home. These can be changed everyday during registration times.
Google for Education
Link for Google Classroom: http://classroom.google.com/
The children will use the same login details from last year. Please keep these details safe as there will be links in Google Classroom to help with homework. Please click here to take you to the school's website to give you further information about this.
Pupil Portal: We recommend that you set the following page up as a favourite on your web browser as it will be familiar to your child. Please contact your child's teacher if you are having difficulty accessing Google Classroom, making sure that your child is logged into their school Google account first.

Whatsapp and Social Media
Increasingly we are finding that behaviour on Whatsapp and other online applications is having an impact on learning and well-being in school. Whatsapp, Tik-Tok and other social media are platforms that we as a school simply cannot monitor and as a result we strongly request that you monitor your children’s behaviour when using the apps. The guidance by Whatsapp is that it should not be used by children under the age of thirteen and this is because many children are not emotionally mature enough to use the platform. Each year, we increasingly are finding that children are sending messages late at night to one another and very early in the morning too – some of these messages have been negative in content too. Children should not be involved in large ‘class’ or ‘year group’ Whatsapp or 'Messenger' groups. Please reinforce this at home.
Home Learning
We value your support in encouraging and ensuring that sufficient time and effort is spent on all Home Learning tasks. If your child is struggling to complete any of the tasks set and has spent a reasonable amount of time on it (approximately 30 minutes) then please encourage them to seek help from their teacher - we will be very happy to support them with Home Learning in school. Of course, if your child wishes to spend extra time on a task this is fine. In Year 5, we expect and encourage children to become increasingly independent and to take responsibility for organising themselves and their Home Learning.
We had overwhelmingly positive feedback for our ‘menu-style’ Home Learning activities and as a result will be continuing with this method. Some tasks may need to be returned via Google Classroom and details of these will be given at the time. We provide a Home Learning Support Club at lunchtimes during the week to support/enable your children to complete Home Learning tasks if they are finding it challenging to do this at home.
Home Learning is set in accordance with the school’s policy. The recommended weekly amount for Year 5 is as follows:
The Year 5 team
Miss Reile
Assistant Headteacher.
Year 5 Lead.
Science Lead.
5H Class Teacher
Mrs. MacKintosh
RWV Lead.
5E Class Teacher

We also have three fabulous teaching assistants in Mr. Faria, Mrs. Moss, Miss Brown and Mrs. Lockhart, all of whom will be working with all of the children in the year group at different points in the term.
