Writing in first grade should have sentences that begin with capital letters and end with punctuation with finger spaces between words.
Narrative writing
This fall we compose personal narrative stories and creative stories. We interview people in our school for posters that help our visitors know who they are and the jobs they do.
Opinion writing
This winter we write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information. We read Mr. Popper's Penguin and explain our thoughts about the perfect pets. We persuade our grandparents that fitness is important in a trifold pamphlet brochure for our Fit Grandparents Day.
Informative writing
This spring we write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas or information clearly. We publish a class Healthy Drink recipe book. We travel to Zootah, our local zoo, to deliver a magazine full of articles we have researched and written about the animals we find there.
Poetry writing
Each week throughout the year we find inspiration from our learning and compose descriptive poems on Friday. We publish these in our class newsletter Views and News. We also arrange verses from our exclamations as we go canoeing at Benson Marina in the spring.
