Dear Parents and Students in Mr. Franzen’s Math Classes:
We are currently in a situation that none of us have dealt with before. Everything taking place from now until things are back to normal (hopefully sooner than later) is new for all of us and will be taken care of as best as possible. While we are on hiatus though, I will follow the plan below as best as possible. After a couple of weeks (or sooner if necessary), we can assess how things are going and adjust as necessary. We all have to be willing to adjust to new things and try our hardest to make things work as best as possible given the circumstances. If you have any input for me as things progress please be willing to share your ideas. At any time, if you have any questions please feel free to get in touch with me. I will include my contact information at the end of this letter.
While we are currently going through this situation, I will be sending packets home for students to work on. Besides Geometry, I will not send books home at this point. I am hoping I can make some notes for you to capture the key ideas from each lesson. I am also planning on giving examples for each lesson. At the end there will be a homework assignment that I expect each student to complete and return to me. If at any point you want your book to be sent home as an additional resource please let me know.
The first set of packets will be sent home in an envelope next Tuesday, March 24th. We will have a site online where you can look at what I expect you to do each day. You can work at your own pace to an extent. You just need to have the packet completed by the next week (Tuesday) so you can return your work to me in the envelope. When you do the work, tear off the homework assignment and put it in the envelope to return to school. Keep the notes and examples so that you have something to refer to as you are doing future assignments. When you return your work, I will have another envelope for you to take for the next weeks work. Each week you will return your assignments in an envelope and you will receive an envelope with your new assignments.
I will be taking grades on your assignments so complete them to the best of your ability. If you have questions you need to ask. A great time to ask questions would be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. As you have probably seen or been told by now, we will be running a 1:00 schedule (with a minor adjustment placing 8th hour, rather than lunch, after 7th hour). You will be expected to Zoom in during the time you would normally have class. (I will keep track of attendance.) During this time I will give a brief lesson on the materials you will be working on. However, it is also a great time to ask questions. If you have questions at other times, you would be best calling (leave a message if necessary) or texting me and I will get back to you as soon as possible. (My information will be given below.) When you return the work, I will be grading it right away. I will return the work to you so you can see how you did and any corrections that needed to be done. If necessary, I may have you redo an assignment to regain some credit. (We will deal with this as necessary on an individual basis.) If we need to set up a Zoom time other than the scheduled time on Tuesdays and Thursdays to answer questions or just to go over material, let me know and we can make the necessary arrangements.
