From 1185CE to 1868CE, Japan was an empire that was run by the Shogun. The Shogun were military leaders during the time. Even though Japan had an emperor, the Shogun were the real leaders of the country.
A Shogun was a military leader in Japan. The title of Shogun was hereditary, which means it was passed down in the family. The Shogun were the real leaders and sources of power in Japan from 1185CE to 1868CE because of their significance in the Japanese Feudal System.
Minamoto no Yoritomo was the first Shogun. Tokugawa Ieyasu was the most powerful of all the Shoguns and founded the Tokugawa Shogunate. When we talk about Medieval Japan, we are mostly talking about what happened during the Tokugaway Shogunate (also known as the Edo Period).
