Course Description
Physics is the study of the fundamental laws of the universe. The study of motion and forces, the behavior of waves, the nature of light, and the relationship between matter and energy make up the fundamental knowledge of existence. These principles are applied to everything from engineering sustainable energy systems to exploring the mysteries of the cosmos in a rapidly advancing technological world.
The Year 11 course consists of 120 indicative hours divided among three focus areas: Fundamentals of mechanics, Waves, and Electricity and magnetism. Students explore physical processes from the microscopic interactions of charges to the macroscopic motion of objects, investigating how energy transfers and forces govern the physical world. A core requirement of the year is the completion of practical investigations and at least one depth study, both of which integrate "Working scientifically" skills such as questioning, predicting, and solving complex problems.
The Year 12 course also comprises 120 indicative hours, structured across four focus areas: Advanced mechanics, Electromagnetism, Nature of light, and Matter, energy and the cosmos. The curriculum emphasises the mathematical analysis of fields, the wave-particle duality of light, and the origins of the universe. Students must complete at least one additional depth study to deepen their understanding of these complex physical systems.

Particular Course Requirements
Depth studies are targeted scientific investigations in which students deepen their understanding of course content through the application of scientific knowledge. They provide opportunities for students to pursue their interests and deepen their scientific understanding of one or more focus areas.
10 hours of depth studies are undertaken as part of the course requirements in both years.
At least ONE depth study must be completed in both Year 11 and Year 12.
Elective Fees
Year 11: $85.00
Year 12: $85.00
Elective fees, as outlined above, cover the cost of consumables used during practical work.
