About the Extended Essay

Intro

Have you ever had a question? A question that you really wanted an answer to? This is your opportunity to research a topic that you're interested in and find your answer. The Extended Essay is a 4000 word essay where you come up with a question and you find an answer through extensive research and reflection. Your Extended Essay works together with Theory of Knowledge to get you 3 extra points towards your IB Diploma. In addition you must pass in order to obtain your full diploma. The matrix that explains the point system is below:

Your Extended Essay should be focused on one or more of the Diploma Programme subjects. The pages on this site will provide more information on each subject offered at LISA, please use this as a one stop shop for all of your Extended Essay needs.

Research and Reflection

You must keep a Research and Reflection Space (RRS) where they record any research or reflective notes and you should share your RRS with your supervisor so that you're both on the same page. You and your supervisor should have at least three meetings with your supervisor, after which you need to fill in three reflections (initial, interim and the viva voce respectively). These reflections will be assessed through elements of Criterion A and Criterion E when you submit your final EE.

Supervisors and Experts

Each student will be allocated a supervisor. At LISA, the EE Coordinator will match up students with supervisors whose education and/or interests match your Extended Essay proposal. It is your responsibility to organise regular check-ins and meetings with your supervisor but you must ensure you only spend between 3 - 5 hours with them. However, you may find individuals who have expertise in your chosen area of study and consult with them outside of your allocated time limit. In addition, remember that your librarian is an essential resource when researching and referencing.
