Carrie Nation

Carrie Nation was a radical political activist who was disgusted with the amount of illegal saloons active in Kansas despite its ban since 1881, and the police turning a blind eye to their operation. She set out to take care of the issue herself by going to saloons around Kansas and destroying them with her iconic hatchet and bag of rocks called smashers. Her methods where controversial and outright illegal leading to her jailing over 32 times. The WCTU criticized her methods but she held out her beliefs and methods which due to its absurdity lead to its exploits being shared around the nation and actually served to spread the movement further.
