Australian Yau Kung Mun Association
澳洲柔功門總會

Est.  1979

The term "Yau " encapsulates the concept of fluid movement, embodying the dedicated practice of living in a state of flow. As the inaugural word, it holds profound significance.

On the other hand, "Kung " not only literally translates to work but also carries a cultural association with kung fu. This association stems from the ancient belief that rigorous and sustained practice over extended periods leads to mastery.

Lastly, "Mun " signifies a gateway or door, portraying our organization as a pathway to cultivating flow. It emphasizes the avoidance of actively pursuing non-fluid ways of life, first as a physical practice, then extending to mental and subconscious realms.

The Australian Yau Kung Mun Chinese Martial Arts Association is a vibrant community dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of Yau Kung Mun, a traditional Shaolin martial art. Founded by Grandmaster Ha Hon Hung in the early 20th century, Yau Kung Mun traces its roots back to the Tang Dynasty in the Shaolin Temple of Hunan province. Yau Kung Mun martial arts were publicly introduced in 1924, with its roots reaching deep into the Tang Dynasty. Originated by the humble Buddhist monk Ding Yang in the Sil Lum Temple, the style was passed down through generations, surviving challenges such as the destruction of temples during the Qing Dynasty. Grandmaster Ha Hon Hung, a native of Kwangtung Province, China, played a pivotal role in bringing Yau Kung Mun to the public. His dedication led to the establishment of the first school in Kwangtung in 1924.

Yau Kung Mun has spread beyond its roots in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, finding a presence in countries like the United States, Canada, Finland, and prominently, Australia. In the 1970s, Yau Kung Mun Australia was established by Leung Cheung, a top disciple of Ha Hon Hung. Today, Sifu Kwan Leung and Johnny Leung lead the team.

The association actively participates in cultural events in Sydney, such as lion dance performances, embodying the spirit of Yau Kung Mun. Recent events, including the Children's Lion Dance Competition, witnessed by the Consulate-General of China in Sydney expressing support, highlighting the cultural significance of Yau Kung Mun in fostering unity, courage, and wisdom. They continue to showcase the lion dance, not only as a form of entertainment but also as a symbol of courage and hope during festive celebrations.

The Australian Yau Kung Mun Association stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of traditional Chinese martial arts, embracing its historical roots while dynamically contributing to the multicultural landscape of Australia.
