Recess Rules
SUPERVISOR DUTIES:
· Monitor student interaction to prevent bullying situations
· Monitor all areas of the playground by moving through the area
· Redirect play and use of equipment that is unsafe and/or does not follow rules
· Take immediate and complete charge of all accidents
· Carry a recess bag with basic triage needs (i.e. bandaids, gloves, antiseptic wipes, cloth)
· Direct students away from muddy & icy areas
· Watch developing weather conditions and clear playground if necessary
· Report any suspicious strangers
· Report any safety concerns to the office (water on slides, broken equipment, etc.)
· Line up students to come indoors following hallway expectations.

RECESS CONSEQUENCES:
If students are not following rules after reminders use the following consequences where applicable: (Avoid removing all recess play where possible)
· Removed from the playground equipment – black top only
· Removed from play on field
· Removed from any competitive play
· Removed from specific equipment if using inappropriately
· Removed from play with specific individuals
· Unable to use balls (when not using appropriately or putting away)
· Line up prior to other students (when having difficulties lining up at whistle)
STUDENT PLAYGROUND EXPECTATIONS:
· The playground is off limits before school
· NO rough play or tackling allowed
· NO games involving killing of any kind (toys or make believe)
· Students will show respect for all staff and students.
· Students will use good sportsmanship when participating in competitive play
· Students will take turns
· When the whistle blows a long blast students will immediately put away balls and line up quietly.
· Students will stay away from puddles, mud and ice.
· Students will leave outdoor items on the ground (rocks, wood chips, sticks, ice)
· Students will play only in designated playground areas. (not in corridors, not going beyond building wall at east and west end of the playground)
· NO toys from home may be brought to recess
· Balls must be put away when finished using. Balls left out will be removed for the following recess
· Make sure students are away from the building, doors, and windows. No students behind the pods. Make sure the children are visible at all times.
· PLAY SPACE
o NO running on play space - NO tag games
o NO climbing on the outside
· TIRE SWINGS
o 3 students per swing at most
o Sit with feet in the middle – no laying down
o DO NOT hang on swing to push – push & release
o Students MUST hang on – no hands free
o No spinning uncontrolled
· SWINGS
o Push and let go – NO underdogs
o DO NOT stand in front of swingers
o NO twisting or side to side
o Sit on bottom – not on stomach
o NO jumping off
o MUST hold on – NO hands free
· SLIDES
o Sit on bottom only
o Only down – not up
o One person at a time
o NO blocking the slides
· MONKEY BARS (No Kdg)
o NO sitting on top
o Keep moving and take turns
o One student at a time crossing
· BLACK TOP ONLY
o No Soccer or football on black top
o Catch only
o No kicking in the air
o Stay clear of windows
WINTER RECESS RULES:
· When there is snow students MUST HAVE boots, snow pants and gloves to be on the snow.
· NO throwing snow or ice
· Hills – students may slide down the hills using slide rules….
o Bottoms only
o NO running start
o NO rolling down
o One at a time
· Snow piles – may climb on & sit but no shoving, games like King of the Hill, etc. (No one on snow pile on black top)
· Students without proper gear may be on black top if there are areas free of snow.
‘500’ RULES
1. Grass field only
2. Choose a thrower
3. The thrower throws the ball into the air and players try to catch the ball.
4. Each throw is worth 100 points.
5. The first player to 500 becomes the thrower.
BASKETBALL RULES
1. 5 players per team (ask recess teacher if you need help dividing teams)
2. Play rock, paper, scissors to determine team who has the ball first.
3. Play begins when the team with the ball throws in from out of bounds under the opposing team’s basket.
4. After a successful basket the other team gets the team out of bounds under the opposing team’s basket.
5. A basket from anywhere on the court scores 2 points.
6. If a ball travels out of bounds, the ball goes to the opposing team. They will throw in from the out of bounds point.
Change in possession:
· A team travels (someone takes more than 1 step without shooting, passing or dribbling)
· Stepping out of bounds with the ball or causing the ball to go out of bounds.
· Kicking the ball
· Fouls – when a player trips, pushes, holds or has body contact with an opponent.
FOUR SQUARE RULES
1. The goal is to move to square A by eliminating the opponents in the other squares.
2. Determine which squares are A – D.
3. The serve begins from Square A.
4. 4 players take position in squares A-D.
5. Player A serves by dropping the ball and hitting it underhand to another square.
6. Players in the other squares must hit the ball after the bounce to another square. If they miss their hit the player is out.
7. If the ball hits the line, the player who hit the ball is out.
8. When a player is out, one of the waiting players moves into square D and the other players advance forward.
THE PLAYER IS OUT:
· if they fail to hit the ball when bounced into their square.
· if they fail to hit the ball successfully into another square.
· if they hit the ball out of bounds or into their own square.
· If they catch or hold the ball.
KICK BALL RULES
1. Kids should line up and have an adult split the teams in whatever manner they see fit. Today I chose AABBAABB to throw off the students who are trying to stack teams by switching places in line.
2. Adults can pick the initial fielding team/kicking team.
3. The pitcher of the fielding team changes every inning. You cannot be the pitcher 2 innings in a row, rotate with other students who want to be the pitcher.
4. Kicking line stays the same order, or as the students come in to home plate to score. No switching places with friends.
5. No stealing bases when the pitcher is holding the ball.
6. Throwing/tagging a student with a ball is permitted, but you may not throw it at the student's face or legs. If the ball hits the students below the waist or above the shoulders, the runner is still "safe".
7. A "foul ball" is called if the ball goes wide of third base, or wide of first base. The kicker is not penalized for a foul ball.
Football Rules
· No fumbles or stripping the player of the ball
· No shoving or grabbing of shirts, even when the receiver touches the ball
· Two hand touch or flag, no tackling. If playing flag; flags need to be on the back of the person, not tucked in or on the side
· Limit people on the ground, unless it is an accident
· No rushing the QB at all, no blitzes or counts
· First down at half way cones (see diagram on back)
· After a touchdown, team that scored kicks off from the end zone, no fumbles once again. If the ball is kicked out of bounds that is where the team receiving starts
· Can’t snap the ball until the defense is ready
· Any sort of argument or fighting over penalties, catches, touchdowns, etc.; the game is done
· Adult at recess makes teams, no exceptions. Try to split friends up.
· If a player quits during the game, they may not reenter the game.
SOCCER RULES
1. Divide players evenly into teams. (If you need assistance dividing teams, please check with a recess teacher.)
2. Choose one player to play goalie / keeper.
3. DO NOT use arms or hands.
4. Pass the ball to team mates to move the ball forward.
5. Kick the ball into the goal to score a point.
6. Each goal kick is one point.
7. If the ball is kicked out of bounds the opposing team throws the ball in bounds.
8. Only the goalie / keeper may touch the ball with hands. If the goalie picks up the ball they may throw it or kick it back into play.
CHANGE OF POSSESSION:
· Touching the ball with arms or hands
· Kicking out of bounds
TETHERBALL RULES
1. 2 Player game
2. Players stand on opposite sides of pole.
3. The court is divided into two sides – opposite sides of the pole.
4. Each player tries to wrap the ball around the pole in opposite directions. The winning player wraps the ball completely in their direction.
5. Play begins with the server standing on his / her side of the court and hitting the ball in his / her direction.
6. Players may hit the ball only with his / her hand without catching the ball.
FOUL:
· Catching or holding the ball.
· Touching the pole or rope.
· Throwing the ball.
· Stepping out of the boundaries.
· Double hits
