Canvas course content can be exported into a Common Cartridge (IMSCC ZIP) file, which can be downloaded from Canvas and then shared with another instructor. The export file can be imported into a blank Canvas course to copy its content. This method works well when sharing an entire course with another instructor or copying content into a different LMS. Sharing a course via a course export file can be accomplished with the following steps:
Create a course export file from the Settings page of the Canvas course you wish to share. Full instructions for this step are on this Canvas Instructor Guide page for creating course export files. Please create the export file on the course Settings page. Content exports created from the Home or Modules page do not create a Common Cartridge file that can be imported back into Canvas or another LMS.
Send the course export file to the intended recipient. This step is performed outside of Canvas. Course export files can often be too large to email. Uploading the file to Google Drive and sharing it there is one recommended method for sharing a large Canvas course export.
The recipient downloads the course export file to their computer and then imports it into their Canvas course. Course export files can be imported in full, or specific content can be selected for import. Full instructions for this step are on this Canvas Instructor Guide page for importing course export files.
Note: Attempting to import a course export file that is larger than the 1GB course storage limit will result in an error. If you need to import a file that is larger than 1GB, please contact lms-admins-lb@linnbenton.edu for assistance.
If you only need to share one or two items, here's a short video on how to do that with other Canvas faculty.
