The program is meant to serve adults who read at (or below) a 5th-grade level, or who have difficulty with the reading level required for LBCC Adult Basic Skills classes.
Student tutees come to us through
orientations for classes at LBCC
referred by agencies, organizations, or libraries; family, friends, neighbors
self-identified and come looking for reading help
advertising on Facebook, newspaper, radio
This is a free service! There is no cost. The books are provided in Literacy Kits.
Tutors are volunteers from the community. They donate their time and skills. They take a training to work with adult students who want to improve their reading.
Adult learners are called "tutees" or "student tutees". They are from the communities in Linn and Benton counties.
A coordinator matches up the volunteer tutor and the student tutee for schedule availability, skills, and language.
Tutors and tutees work together to improve reading skills. The two ways of working together are the physical world (meet in libraries and LBCC spaces) and the online world (meet over camera).
