Homecare
Homecare/Satellite Care Specialty Teams
Thank you for your interest in becoming a Lindsay Wildlife Experience homecare volunteer and helping rehabilitate wildlife. Providing homecare is an extremely rewarding experience and many of our patients do very well with our trained volunteers.
Initial Criteria to Become a Homecare Volunteer
Location
Since some of our social media campaigns reach an audience over a wide geographical area, we need to make sure you are close enough to be an effective homecare Satellite Site of Lindsay Wildlife Experience. We are located at:
1931 First Avenue
Walnut Creek, CA 94597
To be involved in effective homecare, you should be in the San Francisco Bay Area of northern California, ideally within about an hour-or-two drive of Walnut Creek.
Age
Caregivers must be at least 18 years of age (exception by prior arrangement with the Volunteer Manager).
Secluded Space Available
If you are caring for indoor patients, you must have a secluded area/spare room that is not used for household activities and is not accessible by family pets. If you are caring for outdoor patients, you need space for an enclosure in your backyard that is separate from areas used for family activities or pets.
A garage may not be suitable, due to fumes from vehicles or appliances (water heater), and ventilation and lighting issues. But each situation is different, please inquire if you have questions.
To comply with California Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations, we will perform an onsite or remote inspection of the space at your home to be used for patient care. The inspection may range from submitting pictures or video of the proposed space for simple indoor care, to an in-person inspection by staff for a large outdoor enclosure/aviary.
Every effort must be made to ensure wildlife patients are not treated like pets or become habituated or dependent on human care. A patient’s survival in the wild could depend on avoiding humans.
Homecare/Satellite Sites
Some general points that apply to all Satellite Care sites:
Most of the satellite care species have different care and enclosure needs depending on age. You don't need to take all developmental stages, patients can be transferred to a different team site as their needs change.
Most of the equipment and diet components are provided by Lindsay.
You will be required to participate in species-specific training and fulfill other requirements, such as receiving a rabies pre-exposure vaccination series if you will be working with a potential rabies vector species.
To protect the health of our wildlife patients, other volunteers, and staff, you must follow current public health recommendations, including use of appropriate personal protective equipment. Currently Lindsay requires verification that you have received the initial COVID-19 vaccination(s).
Some of the teams have information to help you make an informed decision regarding homecare for their species. Please click on a link below for additional team information:
