Well here we are, the last update of the year. We can't believe how fast this year has gone but are so proud of all the kids for the growth they have made this year! These last couple of weeks are jammed packed with fun! While the big kids are testing, we will be hitting up some favorite fun spots to end a really great year. We have been talking a lot about how to have fun and be safe on these trips in morning meeting. We have 24 amazing kids but excitement, competitiveness and lack of structure can sometimes lead to poor decision making with friends. We have been talking about how to make good choices daily to get ready for these situations, but it would be great if you could remind them about good sportsmanship, self control, following the rules, and making good choices that would be great.

On Tuesday, February 14th, we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day here in the jungle. As part of the day we will be making special bags to collect our Valentines in (DO NOT send in a box or bag for this we are doing all of it at school) and then exchanging Valentines brought in by the students. If your student would like to participate in the exchange of valentines, please follow the following guidelines:

Homework for the week:

This week your child will have a reading fluency/comprehension sheet as well as a math daily review sheet. This week the reading passage is titled: Shopping. Keep up the great reading! We hope you are seeing the improvement in the kids.

The weekly math review is set up by days and is just that, a review of concepts they should be able to complete independently. Please check over their work with them and make sure they accomplish this with confidence. This sheet is also due on Friday morning and there will be a quiz each Friday as well.

Finally, make sure you are studying the spelling words and sentences below. For the test they will have to be able to spell the word as well as be able to sort them into groups. The groups will be: Super Words, o, oa, oe, & ow. As the words are called they will have to spell them correctly under the correct heading on the paper provided. You may want to practice this with your student this week as you are studying. There is nothing to turn in for spelling homework, so please study them as needed throughout the week to be ready for the test this Wednesday.

January 23rd through 27th

Happy 100th Day of School week! It seems hard to believe that we have been in school for 100 days! We are excited to spend the day Tuesday completing our 100 minutes of service in a variety of ways, sharing our 100 items, and creating/building with our STEM centers focused on the number 100. Please don't forget, on this day, ALL students need to bring in 100 items of their choice to share with the class. Students should be able to fit this collection in their backpacks or be able to carry it to class without assistance. Your student will bring home their 100 items at the end of the day. Thank you to all the families who signed up to contribute items to our day! Please send in the item you signed up for on Monday.

Since the kids are in Spanish for the quarter, Senora Reed does a newsletter so you will know what they are covering in Spanish. Her weekly newsletter will be after the spelling lists below so please make sure to check it out weekly as well.

Draw a "fun" 100 in the planner this week : ) Be creative and extra tickets for bringing the "fun".

Hello Parents!  One of our teachers is having a birthday soon! We will celebrate Mrs. Primm’s birthday on Friday, January 27th. We ask that you please have your child make/sign a card and send it in to school that morning. She absolutely LOVES handmade cards and saves them and puts them out on her birthday! We will not be collecting for a class gift but if you would like to send in a small token of appreciation, please refer to the Teacher Favorites at http://tinyurl.com/LCSTeacherFavorites if you need suggestions. If there is a parent who would be interested in sending in lunch for the teacher that day, please let me know.

Thank you so much for helping to make the day extra special! Lauren and Kim

January 9th through 13th

Happy 1st full school week of 2023! It was so good to see all the smiling faces last week. We really enjoyed hearing about all the fun things that were done over the break and all the goodies they got. This week we don't have anything big going on, so we will keep it short and sweet this week : ) Below are the upcoming reminders and the homework for the week AND don't forget, Go Dawgs!

Our quarter 3 special is Spanish! We will have P.E. on Mondays and Fridays as well so please make sure your student has on the appropriate shoes these days.

January 16th: No School MLK Day

Our Middle of the Year (MOY) testing will be starting up this week (Probably Wednesday and Thursday). There is nothing to do for this, I just wanted you to be aware that it was going to be happening.

Homework for the week:

This week your child will have a reading fluency/comprehension sheet as well as a math daily review sheet. This week the reading passage is titled: The Farm. Keep up the great reading! We hope you are seeing the improvement in the kids.

-Make sure you are listening to your child read this passage for 1 min each day and record their words in the chart at the bottom. It is OK if they don't get through the entire passage because we want good accuracy and fluent reading (pausing at commas, stopping at periods, and reading with good expression) but we are looking for them to read a little bit further each night.

-When answering the questions on the back, please make sure your student fills in the bubble of the answer. Any questions with a written response should be in a complete sentence and have good evidence to back up their answer.

The weekly math review is set up by days and is just that, a review of concepts they should be able to complete independently. Please check over their work with them and make sure they accomplish this with confidence. This sheet is also due on Friday morning and there will be a quiz each Friday as well.

January 2nd through January 6th

Welcome to 2023! We hope you all enjoyed your break and were able to recharge and ring in the new year with friends and family! We hope you enjoyed your handmade ornaments and we are so excited to have the kids back this week. We can't wait to hear all about what they did and all the fun they had. On Wednesday morning we will be sharing so if you would like to email me a couple pictures from the break for your child to share please do. Mrs. Primm is away on family vacation this week so for any transportation changes during the day please make sure to email me. If it is late in the afternoon, please call the office so they can let me know : ) So far there isn't much on the calendar but here is the latest and greatest for the next couple of weeks!

Our Middle of the Year (MOY) testing will be starting up next week. There is nothing to do for this, I just wanted you to be aware that it was going to be happening. This week we will be getting back into the groove of things to make sure they are in the right mindset for it. The kids have all been doing so well, so I can't wait to see all the personal growth they show me! You will be getting a printed report once all the testing has been completed.

January 16th: No School MLK Day

WE WANT TO SEE ALL THE PINK!! The profits from this day and these other opportunities will benefit the initiative partner for this year.

October 24th through 28th

Time seems to be flying by as we entering our last week in October! This week the weather really got chilly in the mornings but were very pleasant in the afternoons. The leaves are also starting to show off for us as well. Due to some scheduling mix-ups, we had to move one of our P.E. days to Thursday. So this quarter we will now have P.E. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and music will remain the same.

Conference Day-November 1st:

Come and lets meet face to face and chat about your student and their growth so far this year and the goals we are working to meet by the end of the year. If you haven't already, click the link to sign-up for a time slot to come and meet with us.

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0C48ACA829A6FC1-conference1

If you have already signed up for a time, you should received an email from me with a form to complete about your child before we meet. Please make sure you do this prior to our conference. Thanks!!

Homework for the week:

This week your child will have a reading fluency/comprehension sheet as well as a math daily review sheet. This week the reading passage is titled: The Birthday Party.

Finally, make sure you are studying the spelling words and sentences below. There is nothing to turn in for spelling homework, so please study them as needed throughout the week to be ready for the test on Wednesday.

This week, please draw a pink breast cancer awareness ribbon in your child's planner.

Track Attack Week is here plus we also have school picture day on Wednesday of this week AND it is international Dot Day on Thursday as well! We had a really good week last week! Our 9-11 Day of Service and Remembrance was really awesome! The kids enjoyed making the friendship bracelets for local nurses and putting together their little goodie bags. Mrs. Primm delivered them to local Urgent Care facilities here in Denver and Huntersville and they were all very appreciative! Pictures from our day are over on our Safari Photo page so go check them out! Make sure log 3 hours of service hours for your student as well. For more information on how to do that, please click here

Track Attack is this Friday! We are still $28,000 from meeting the goal PTO has set for us. If you haven't already donated, please consider doing  so this week. The PTO is wonderful and supports our school in so many ways so this money is really important!  Click here to set up your student's account and to donate: https://lcsdenverpto.membershiptoolkit.com/  This day is also a 1/2 day with dismissal being at 11:30. Wednesday is school picture day! Our photo time is 8:15 so make sure you are on time and looking great : ) We have P.E. that day so I made sure to grab the earliest time so we would all be looking our best. Draw a camera this week in the planner so we know you will be picture ready : )

International Dot Day:

Thursday, Sept. 15th is International Dot Day! A day that is inspired by Peter Reynolds' book, The Dot. It is a day to celebrate individual creativity and growth mindset in all of us! To celebrate in this day, your student may wear anything they can find with a dot on it! It can be polka-dots on pants, shirts, shoes, socks, hairbows, etc... Or you can be creative and think of a different way to be creative with a dot!

September 5th through 9th

Happy Labor Day! We hope everyone was able to enjoy their Monday off of school. Whether you were relaxing at home or had plans with friends and family, we hope you were able to recharge and enjoy the time together. The next 2 weeks are very busy here in the jungle and all around school so please make sure to continue to check this website! All events are listed on the Upcoming Events Page so you can get a full look at September.

This Friday is our 9-11 Day of Service and Remembrance. As a school we emphasize the importance of giving back to the community. This year we will be talking about 9-11 in an age appropriate way and then making friendship bracelets for local nurses in our community. After we make the bracelets, we will be adding them to a small goody bag filled with a note, mints, gum, and Chapstick and then delivering them to local nurses.

Track Attack is almost here and the LCS community is doing a great job of fundraising so far! We have raised over $54,000 as a school but we still need around 40-45 to meet the goal PTO has set for the year. Also, don't forget,  if you raise $250 by 9-9 you will be entered to win 6 Carolina Panthers tickets to see them take on the Saints on September 25th. Click here to set up your student's account and to donate: https://lcsdenverpto.membershiptoolkit.com/ There is still a good amount of time to get those donations in and earn those student incentives!

Please draw a rainbow in the planner this week so we know you are in the know : )

Purple Tuesday Folders

Purple Tuesday Folders are coming home again today! On the outside of the purple folder is a page for you to sign that you saw the papers in the purple folder.

Week of August 29th through September 2nd

August is coming to a close this week and we are really getting those routines and procedures down. We don't have anything special going on next week so just a normal week. The kids did a good job with their benchmark testing that we did this week and I will have a report on how they did as well as an information sheet headed your way soon. We have a couple of kids that I need to get finished up next week. Soft Starts have been going really well and the kids seem to be really loving this time in the morning, which is awesome. I have heard several kids saying they have been asking to get to school earlier so they have the time to play : ) Don't forget to check the Soft Start pictures by clicking the link on the Safari Photos page. They have been asking for us to take their pictures with their creations and we have happily obliged and uploaded them : )

Next week we will be participating in LCS's 9-11 Day of Service and Remembrance. On this day we will talk a bit about what happened on that day (age appropriately) and discuss how it has turned into a day of service for the country. As our service we will be learning how to make friendship bracelets for local nurses that we will pack into a goody bag with some other goodies. Thank you to all who purchased items off of the Amazon wish list for this.

Harris Teeter VIC Card

You can help our school earn extra money each year by linking your VIC card to our school (#4571).  You have to do it each year but its really easy to do (Linking Steps).  Put a $ sign in the planner once you have linked your card!!

Track Attack!

Track Attack will be here before you know it! The Prize Patrol came around to the classrooms on Friday and handed out the first round of prizes and coupons earned from donations. Also, don't forget about the 2 incentives PTO released this past week: Raise $125 by 9-2 and be entered to win a basic subscription of Disney Plus, Hulu, or Netflix for a year AND if you raise $250 by 9-9 you will be entered to win 6 Carolina Panthers tickets to see them take on the Saints on September 25th. Click here to set up your student's account and to donate: https://lcsdenverpto.membershiptoolkit.com/ There is still a good amount of time to get those donations in!

Purple Tuesday Folders

Coming home on every Tuesday afternoon will be a purple folder. In this purple folder will be all of the graded work from the week prior. Please take all the work out of the folder and review it with your student. If there are assessments in there with a hot pink sign and return sticker, please go over it with your child and then sign it and return it back in the purple folder the next day.

On the outside of the purple folder is a page for you to sign that you saw the papers in the purple folder. The folder is always returned on Wednesday morning with their regular folder. All other work from the week will come home in their folders on Friday.

**If you read all about this purple folder, please draw a star in the planner**

Homework: ALL HOMEWORK NEEDS TO BE COMPLETED IN PENCIL.

This week your child will have a reading fluency/comprehension sheet as well as a math daily review sheet. This week the reading passage is titled: Apples. I saw some really good increases in words from day to day, YAY! I know these may seem simple and easy but we are setting a good routine for the kids. They will become more challenging in the coming weeks. Keep following these reminders for this week:

-Make sure you are listening to your child read this passage for 1 min each day and record their words in the chart at the bottom. It is OK if they don't get through the entire passage because we want good accuracy and fluent reading (pausing at commas, stopping at periods, and reading with good expression) but we are looking for them to read a little bit further each night.

Week of August 22nd through August 26th

We made it thorough the first full week of school! The kids are doing a great job of learning new routines and procedures while getting their brains back in school mode. We ended the week with a fun map project that involved a bunch of icing, cookies, and Hersey Kisses. Hopefully you heard all about it! Make sure you pop over to Safari Photos to check out the fun. This week we have a couple birthdays to celebrate and we will be completing our beginning of the year state testing. The kids will take these benchmark assessments now, at the middle of the year, and at the end of the year. These assessments are just one of the ways we use to measure growth throughout the year. Friendly Lunch Reminders:

Homework: ALL HOMEWORK NEEDS TO BE COMPLETED IN PENCIL.

This week your child will have a reading fluency/comprehension sheet as well as a math daily review sheet. This week the reading passage is titled: School. Everyone did a good job on their first one last week! I know these may seem simple and easy but we are setting a good routine for the kids. They will become more challenging in the coming weeks. After looking through them, there are a few reminders for this week:

-Make sure you are listening to your child read this passage for 1 min each day and record their words in the chart at the bottom. It is OK if they don't get through the entire passage but we are looking for them to read a little bit further each night.

Finally, make sure you are studying the spelling words below.

Week of August 15th through August 19th

Welcome to the first full week of school! It was so great to see everyone and get to know their fun personalities. I think we were all tired by Friday so hope everyone had a relaxing weekend and are recharged and ready for the week ahead! This weekly post is a little longer than usual because I want to make sure that everyone has all the information they need for the week from our room happenings as well as some extras going around the school. I will try to keep it as short as possible but please make sure you read all the way to the bottom : ) Also, don't forget to click over to our Ruler of the Jungle page as we have our first Ruler starting this week and we couldn't be more excited!

-Parents you haven't already, please make sure you fill out BOTH sides of the "Getting to Know your Child" sheet and return it back to school in your student's folder as soon as you can. Thanks!

-Track Attack fundraising has officially begun! For those new to Track Attack, this is PTO's biggest fundraiser for the year. PTO supports our school in so many ways so let's get going on getting donations! You can be creative or just call family members to get their support. We are also looking for corporate sponsors as well. Please click the link to learn more about PTO, Track Attack, and how to donate to our awesome school! https://lcsdenverpto.membershiptoolkit.com/

-We keep the classroom chilly so please make sure your child has a uniform approved jacket in their bag with them with their name inside.

-Please check and initial the planner nightly. Anything you need to let us know about in terms of transportation changes or quick notes, please write those at the bottom as the kids will use the top to write down their homework daily. We are trying to set up some good organization skills for them in the future. There will be times we give you a secret code to draw in the planner so we know you read the information. You can draw this at the bottom with your initials.

-Please make sure Shelly is copied on any transportation emails you send during the day. She is able to check her email more frequently during the day so we can catch these before dismissal.

-If you signed up to send in items for our first 2nd grade project, please make sure to send those items in by Thursday so we can make sure we have enough for each classroom. Thanks for supporting this fun little activity.

Homework:

This week your child will have a reading fluency/comprehension sheet as well as a math daily review sheet. This week the reading passage is titled: Friends. There are directions coming home on how to complete this for the week but please know you should be listening to your child read this passage for 1 min each day. It is ok if they don't get through the entire passage but we are looking for them to read a little bit further each night. The comprehension questions on the back can be done at any point during the week. Any questions with a written response should be in a complete sentence and have good evidence to back up their answer. This sheet is due on Friday morning.

Each week your student will have a list of spelling words that follows our phonics program. This week they will get their first list on Wednesday and their test will be on 8/24. We do not require you to turn anything in, but you will need to review over these words nightly and make sure they are ready for their test. You can find a copy of the first list below.

The weekly math review is set up by days and is just that, a review of concepts they should be able to complete independently. Last week in class, we completed one of these together so they know what the expectations are when completing this sheet. Please check over their work with them and make sure they accomplish this with confidence. This sheet is also due on Friday morning.

We have seen so many wonderful All About Me posters already. If your child hasn't finished theirs yet, keep working and turn it in by Friday.

Soft Starts:

We started talking about a learning how to do Soft Starts in the classroom and are ready to roll with them this week. Let me explain a little bit about them...Traditionally the kids have come in, unpacked, and then got their morning going with a morning worksheet to get their brains going for the day. While this was good for some kids, it was frustrating for others, and honestly a pain to plan for sometimes as a teacher. There is a lot of research behind this but basically instead of this dreaded morning work, the kids come in, unpack, get ready for their day, and then they play. It is a simple way for students to ease into their school day. Once unpacked and ready for their day, they select an activity or game from the shelf to warm up their minds. Soft start activities are calming, yet inquiry based activities that get the students mentally, emotionally and physically ready for the learning day. In addition, the students are able to chat and work together during all of the activities. This strengthens the sense of classroom community and empowers the class to problem solve and make their own choices. And let us tell you...the KIDS ARE LOVING IT! We have seen so much creativity, heard laughter, seen kids interact with different kids, and honestly, a more productive rest of our school day. Some of the activities/games could be: fidget basket, cup stacking, pattern blocks, straws and connectors to build with, an art station (with colored pencils, markers, crazy cutting scissors, and colored paper), Connect Four, Chutes and Ladders, Pipe Cleaners, Magnetic Tiles, Blokus, Wooden blocks, and unifix cubes for building. We will switch out activities for new activities so they have some new choices from week to week. Throughout last week, the kids have been asking us to take their picture when they have created something and we have happily obliged them. Here is a link to a folder so you can see the pictures from this past week, and as we take more we will add them in this folder. We hope your student enjoys starting their day like this and we are excited to add new activities in the coming weeks!

This was a lot, but it was all good useful information : ) Please draw a cat in your child's planner letting us know you are in the know this week!

Welcome to the Jungle for the 2022-2023 School Year!!

We could not be more excited to have you become a BIG part of our jungle family and we are ready to get started with the amazing school year. 2nd Grade is such a fun year where the kids learn some really interesting things! We set high expectations, work hard, encourage, love, and celebrate all year long. We hope you are ready for a really fun year!

We can't emphasize how important this website will be to you as we go through the year. Anything and everything you will need is on the website somewhere and we tried very hard to make it as easy to navigate as possible. Please, please, please bookmark this page and check it frequently so you are always in the know with what is going on in the classroom. You can also find a link to the website in the signature of my email OR you can scan the QR code that is in the back pocket of your child's homework folder. This particular page is where you will find specific information for the week as well as any extras you may need.

We are so very excited to see all the smiling faces at Open House on Monday evening and on Wednesday! We can't wait to see all they will be able to accomplish and just how much they grow. Here are a couple of housekeeping items to help us get the year rolling on a great start:

Geography will be our first unit in Social Studies and we have a really fun project that we will be completing at school. We need a few items to be sent in so that we can accomplish this activity. Below is a link to a sign-up genius. The items you see on the sign-up are for the entire 2nd grade so please don't feel like you have to sign up for a lot of the items. This link will be given to all of 2nd grade so just sign up for what you are comfortable with.

Homework:

The kids have an All About Me Poster to complete and hand in by NEXT Friday (8/19). We will have other homework starting the next week so you may want to get that poster completed before Monday (8/15). Your student can turn it in any time between now and next Friday.

Parents have some homework too (The kids always LOVE this)! There are two sheets (one with an apple and one with a zebra banner across the top). Please make sure to complete both of these and return them back to school with your student by THIS FRIDAY. The Student Card (apple one) we take with us everywhere so please make sure that information is written neatly and current. Also, don't forget that the Getting to Know Your Child sheet (zebra one) has two sides!!
