The Lighthouse Lens

If you are new to our Lighthouse community, welcome!
This quarterly newsletter is a time when we zoom out to get a big-picture view on the school’s impact and its reason for being. It also helps parents and students and alumni of both the primary and secondary school to hear what the school is doing as a whole. 

Did you know parties and feasts are commands from God? We believe in remembrance and celebration. Through the Biblical narrative, God purposely builds in regular time in our week, our months and years when we are literally commanded to stop, remember and party. It’s what keeps us going.

With that mandate, I’d like to reflect on and celebrate the contribution of two people. Gilles Athaw who has just completed his time as a Board member. Gilles has been specifically helpful in guiding Lighthouse through its charitable status confirmation, ensuring legal compliance across many areas of the school and being a part of our strategic planning which has been renewed for this year. Thank you, Gilles!

Paul Beatty, our Executive Head,  is concluding a highly fruitful three years with Lighthouse this month and will hereafter retire to his home country of the USA, along with his wife Lucy. As we reflect on the particulars of the circumstances that brought Paul from the USA to Bangladesh and then Lighthouse in Mauritius, we can only shake our heads in wonder at God’s provision of the right person at the right time. Through a leadership defined by integrity and humility, Paul has shepherded us through everything from school academic improvement to shooing dogs off campus. We’ll miss his smile waving cars in at the entrance, a simple but powerful way the Lighthouse team signals their availability, service and welcome.

Dear Lighthouse Community,

"I thank my God every time I remember you.  In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy  because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,  being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."  - Philippians 1:3-6

The Apostle Paul’s greeting in his letter to the Philippians captures how I want to express my gratitude to the entire community.  You have contributed to continuity and progress in the development of the school in pursuit of our mission and vision.  Your steadfast commitment and aspirations have been encouraging and have provided healthy challenges.  In coming to the school, I  sensed a special nature about the school.  Three and a half years later, I can attest that special nature has been God’s provision of the people of this community and their vision for what learning can be.  

Learning is an activity in which humans naturally engage from birth, and you witness the joy and motivation it generates.  Education is an institutional endeavor that civilization initiated to try to direct learning toward society’s priorities.  At Lighthouse, I have enjoyed working alongside adults and students who recognize learning transcends exam results and involves our character, creativity, our mental and physical well-being, and spiritual journey.  Academics are important, yet represent one dimension of learning.  Lighthouse truly values the whole person and designs its education accordingly.

As you will see in this edition, the Lighthouse alumni are now venturing further into discovering and fulfilling their identity and purpose.  The Lighthouse staff members are furthering their qualifications with additional studies and degrees.  Our leaders are communicating about our curriculum and its connections beyond Lighthouse.  Enjoy learning about our journey and direction.

Mr Doon’s Passing

It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of Danraj Gungadin (Mr Doon) last night, 16 April. 

Mr Doon has served Lighthouse as a loyal member of our facilities team since 2015. 

His work ethic, positivity and altruism have greatly impacted all of those who were blessed to have crossed paths with him.

Please join us in praying for comfort for Mrs Gungadin, their children, and for their many families and friends, as they grieve his passing.
