Message from the Primary Curriculum Leader

Dear Wonderful Lighthouse Families,

It has been a wonderful start to the week, with our Houses beginning their Lighthouse Has Talent auditions! There is still one more week of auditions, so do encourage your child to get involved if they are interested in participating.

This week, we have also been reminding students during assemblies and Family Time that they are each uniquely created by God, with different gifts to celebrate. Through the story of David and Goliath, they were encouraged with the message: “I am special even when I feel small, and I can be strong and courageous” (Joshua 1:9).

A quick reminder that from this week, only Lighthouse winter uniform is permitted. Additional layers underneath are not allowed. Please refer to the uniform guide if you are unsure, and do reach out to the uniform shop if needed, as jackets are available in store.

We also look forward to our French Curriculum Webinar tonight at 17:00. The link will also be shared via WhatsApp. Parents are welcome to ask questions in the chat, though we may not be able to address all of them within the time available. A recording will be shared next week, and we strongly encourage you to watch it ahead of Parent-Teacher Conferences.

Speaking of which, a final and important reminder to book your Parent-Teacher Conference slots (this Wednesday and Friday) on Ed-Admin.
These meetings are a key moment to discuss your child’s progress and how we can best support them together. We highly encourage students to attend so that this can be a meaningful three-way conversation. Please note that there will be no school on Friday.

We also invite you to check out the book sale taking place on Wednesday (details below).

Finally, do take a moment to watch the two MAP videos included in this newsletter. They provide a helpful overview of how MAP works and what the scores mean. Teachers will share and explain your child’s results during the conferences. Reports can be shared digitally upon request.

Please note that Grade 2 Reading has been moved to tomorrow.

French Curriculum Webinar, 13 July (Today)

Our French Curriculum Webinar is today! For those enrolled, you have received an invitation by email. You can still connect via this LINK.

17:00-17:15: Ms Flo presents the new curriculum and answers questions submitted by parents via the form.
17:15-17:30: French team answers new questions submitted during the webinar by chat.

Important: please be reminded that this is a webinar. Parents will not be able to talk during the presentation nor during the Q&A session as their microphones will be muted. Parents can interact by the live chat. Questions for the Q&A can be sent via chat during the presentation and during the Q&A time.

Ms Stefanie (communications@lighthouse.edu.com) will be moderating the webinar and assisting with any technical inquiry.

Second-Hand Books Sale, 15 July (during PTC)

Fancy a good read? Lighthouse Library will host a second-hand children's book sale at the Hub on Wednesday, July 15 from 12:00-15:30 during parent-teacher conferences.

The sale profits will help fund our new French books for the library.

Fresh and pesticide-free vegetables await you at the FarmLab Market next week on Wednesday, 22 July!

Some students from Grade 9 will also participate and sell nutritious and organic products, made with veggies grown by them or on the school farm.

Lighthouse Has Talent Finals, 24 July (Reminder)

Lighthouse Has Talent is coming up soon! Auditions will take place today (13) and 20 July. Finalists will be announced on 21 July and will then prepare for the finals on 24 July.

Please remember that the finals will take place in the morning, and only parents of finalists will be invited to attend.

We look forward to seeing our talented pupils on stage!

Whole Primary Picnic and Reception to Grade 3 School Campout, 24 July

On 24 July, from 17:00, join our Family Picnic, where we invite all parents and students to pack a picnic dinner and enjoy a relaxed evening under the stars untill 20:00. Feel free to call on your friends and family to join us for this fun evening!

Remember to please bring your own chairs, picnic blankets and tables if needed.

No food or drink will be on sale.

Foundation Phase parents (Reception to Grade 3), grandparents and students (and siblings) are invited to pack their camping gear too and stay on after the picnic for a fun campout on campus. Think campfire, marshmallows and hot chocolate!

Set-up from Friday, 17:00 - Leaving on Saturday, 09:00

Bring your own:

Camping gear, including sleeping bags and everything else needed for a comfortable evening!

Cutlery and crockery.

Food, snacks and drinks (no alcohol permitted); hot water will be provided.

Mosquito repellent.

Elevated barbeques are allowed, should you want to cook your food over the coals.

Parent-Teacher Conferences, 15 and 17 July: Sign-ups Close on Thursday

Kindly be reminded that appointment booking slots are still open on Ed-Admin until 12:00 on Thursday 16 July.

Also note that there will be no school on Friday, 17 July.

French Assessment

As you know, our French programme is organised into three streams: French as a Foreign Language, Intermediate, and Advanced.

Over the past months, placement has been based mainly on continuous assessment. However, this alone is not sufficient to ensure the fairest decisions. We will therefore be conducting a more formal French assessment next week, using a DELF-style format (Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing). This will help us better understand each child’s level and ensure they are placed where they can thrive.

Following the assessment, from August (Term 3), students will be placed in the class that best matches their level and needs. They will remain in this group until next year. You will be informed of any level changes in the CAR 6 report.

These formal assessments will become part of our yearly process, although the exact timing (end of July or end of year) is still being finalised.

Please see the timetable below. Workbooks will be sent home this week to support revision. We encourage you to support your child in preparing, without placing unnecessary pressure: students have been prepared and know what to expect.

What's Happening in Secondary?

Multi-Sports Day Feedback

We had an amazing time welcoming Westcoast International Secondary School on Tuesday! Our netball, volleyball and football teams competed against their Westcoast peers in a series of heated matches around the campus.

There was so much excitement and joy in the air, that even the Primary students watched a couple of games!

Here’s the sports results:

Traffic Flow: Morning, Afternoon and Wednesday Pickup

Reception and Grade 1 Pickup

Parents should enter the gate in the right lane. You should enter the lay-by and pull forward as far as possible for your child to enter your car. Once your child is secured in your vehicle, follow the lay-by and exit the far end to rejoin the right lane of primary traffic. Move to the left lane, turning right, and carefully pass the Grade 2 and 3 loading zone and merge to proceed past the Pavilion to exit at the lower gate.
If your family has siblings in Grade 2 or 3, they will still be picked up with your reception or Grade 1 child.
Grade R parents, as communicated, please drop and go. Only park if you have a meeting with a teacher or if you need to drop off something with a teacher.

Grade 2-3 Pickup

Parents should enter the gate in the right lane. Instead of entering the lay-by, proceed to the roundabout turning right and remaining in the right lane. A new ‘Wednesday only’ loading zone will be located at the end of the Hub parking lot. Once your child is secure, merge into the traffic to proceed past the Pavilion to exit at the lower gate.

Grade 4-6 Pickup

Parents should enter the gate in the left lane. At the roundabout, stay left and proceed behind the secondary to your usual pickup point at the lay-by on the right near the Farm Lab/lower gate and pull forward as far as possible. Once your child is secure in the car, remain in the lay-by and follow vehicles in the lay-by to exit the far end and rejoin the general flow of traffic, and exit campus.

Pick-up at the Hub (for online purchases only): Monday to Friday (08:00 - 15:30 - upon email notification that your order is ready for collection).
Uniform Shop in the Pavilion building (first floor): Monday (08:00 - 12:00), Wednesday (08:00 - 13:30), Friday (08:00 - 12:00).

Please make sure to bring your reservation number in order to collect your purchase at the Hub.

Attendance: Notice of Early Departure

If your child needs to leave campus before the usual dismissal time at short notice and for a valid reason, please call the Hub or send an email to attendance@lighthouse.edu.mu before 13:30 so we can inform your child's teacher. After 14:00, students and teachers may be in different areas (especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays when we run Sports & Clubs), and messages may not reach them in time. To avoid any confusion, please ensure all transport and arrangements are clearly communicated.

In case of early departure, the parent or responsible party must sign the student out at the Hub.

Health Reminders

If something has changed for your child health wise, please keep us up to date by submitting a new Student Health Form. Otherwise, we will assume all permissions and medical information remain unchanged.

No medications may be kept in student bags! If your child needs to take medication while at school, please fill out this Medication Authorization form and drop the form and medication at the HUB.

First Aid notifications to parents: We do not phone parents for minor first aid incidents at school. You will receive a call or note in the following circumstances:
- A call if your child is sick needs to be sent home
- A call if your child is injured and may require further medical attention.

Fever-Free Policy

Any child who develops a fever should remain at home until they are fever-free for 24hours without the use of fever-reducing medications (such as Paracetamol or Motrin/Ibuprofen).

Why is this necessary? Fever-reducing medication (such as panadol or burofen) can mask symptoms, making a child appear well when they may still be contagious or prone to a relapse.
What defines a fever? For the purposes of this policy, a fever is considered a temperature 37.8°C or higher.

When to Keep Your Child Home:

In addition to the Fever-Free Policy, please consider keeping your child home if they exhibit:

Vomiting or diarrhea( 2+ times) within the last 24 hours.
Too weak or unwell to participate in the school activities.

We understand that keeping a child home can be a challenge for working schedules, but your cooperation is essential in preventing larger outbreaks in the classroom.
