Artists and scientists both respond to and shape the society around them, asking enduring questions of the world. They both have questioned the idea of progress in our changing world. In relation to nature and the environment, technological innovations continue to raise important questions about how we improve our landscape and the costs that might bring, whether environmental or social. Artists and scientists use the same visual tools, such as drawing and photography, to understand the unseen or previously incomprehensible. Visual tools are key to interrogate, control and communicate their ideas about the world. The unknowns of the universe have stimulated the imaginations of artists and scientists. Their work explores the visible and invisible matter that surrounds us and questions our place in the cosmos. Scientists and artists have searched for meaning in the matter that surrounds them, whether it be plants, clouds or abstract mathematics. As Albert Einstein said: I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination encircles the world.
