You Choose The Award!
This week, you'll choose the Award AND the three qualifying books. Read more below!
Step 1 • Required: Choose an award
Using the spreadsheet below, select an award the honors books for young adults (readers ages 12* -18). Be sure it's not an award we covered this semester!
*The protagonist must be at least 12 years old
Step 2 • Required: Select three books
In addition to qualifying for the award you've chosen, the books you select must meet the same criteria I use when choosing books:
Published in the last 24 months
Written for readers age 12* - 14 (grades 7+)
*The protagonist should be at least 12 years old
Vary in format, genre and representation
Step 3 • Optional: Other suggestions
You do not need to have the books you've chosen approved in advance. However, you will be sharing your selections both in this week's RA assignment and in the module discussion. Credit for one/both of these assignments may be reduced if one (or more) of the titles does not meet the selection criteria above. With that in mind, feel free to run your choices by me - just in case.
Don't forget that you'll be completing your final RA assignment of the semester using this book list. Keep in mind how your choices complement the RA format you've saved for the end of the semester.
FAQs
Q: Can I use books from this semester's reading lists for this assignment?
A: Maybe. You may use any of the choice readings (list 2 from each module) that you did NOT read during the assignment week.
Q: Can I use books from previous semester's reading lists for this assignment?
A: Maybe. Be sure to check the publication date to ensure they meet the requirements for this assignment?
Q: What do you mean by "varying format/representation?"
A: Each week I've tried to ensure that module reading lists contain a variety of formats. From comics, to verse and, of course, traditional novels, each list is designed to appeal to a broad variety of readers. Similarly, I've intentionally created reading lists that include an array of genres, voices and represented experiences. (See my inclusivity audit for more info). With that in mind, to whatever degree possible, and within the context of the award you've chosen*, I want you to do the same when selecting books for this assignment. Please reach out if you have questions.
* If you choose an award that focuses on a specific format, genre or representation, that will rightly dictate some of your choices here.
Q:: Since I work mostly with primary (grades prek -3) or middle grade (grades 4-7) learners, can I focus on books written for younger readers?
A: No. You'll get to focus on those readers when you take 547. For this assignment, the books you select should be written for grades 7+ (Ages 12-18)
Q: I think I can change your mind about these requirements!
A: Technically, that isn't a question, but I admire your confidence! Reach out if you feel strongly that adjusting the requirements of this assignment will benefit you as a learner - I'm all ears!
